Skanda Sashti 2026: 16 September Date, Kartikeya Vrat Vidhi, Katha & Mantras

This week, every street in Maharashtra, every courtyard in Karnataka and every WhatsApp family group will be full of one name — Ganpati Bappa. Ganesh Chaturthi falls on 14 September 2026, and for ten days the elder-worshipped, obstacle-removing son of Shiva and Parvati holds the whole country's attention.

Two days later, quietly and with far fewer crowds in the north, comes his brother's day.

Skanda Sashti — the Shashthi tithi sacred to Kartikeya, the warrior-son of Shiva, known across the south as Murugan, Subramanya, Shanmukha and Velayudhan. On Wednesday, 16 September 2026, devotees will fast from sunrise, light a lamp before the six-faced Lord, and ask him for the one thing he is famous for granting: courage. Not wealth, not comfort — the nerve to face what is in front of you.

If Ganesha removes the obstacle, Skanda is the one who hands you the spear and tells you to walk through it. This guide covers the exact tithi timings for 2026, the full birth katha from the Puranas, the vrat vidhi step by step, fasting rules, the samagri you will need, and the mantras that belong to this day.

⏰ Skanda Sashti 2026 falls on Wednesday, 16 September 2026. Shashthi tithi begins 16 September at 08:59 AM IST and ends 17 September at 10:47 AM IST. Because Skanda Sashti is observed when Shashthi prevails at madhyahna (midday), the vrat is kept on 16 September.

Skanda Sashti 2026: Date and Timings

Detail Timing (IST)
Vrat day Wednesday, 16 September 2026
Hindu month Bhadrapada, Shukla Paksha
Tithi Shashthi (sixth lunar day)
Shashthi begins 16 September 2026, 08:59 AM
Shashthi ends 17 September 2026, 10:47 AM
Main puja time Madhyahna kaal — roughly 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM
Evening puja / parana After sunset on 16 September, or next morning

A note that saves confusion every year: the same Shashthi tithi also carries Lolark Shashthi in Kashi, observed on 17 September 2026 because that vrat uses sunrise-prevailing tithi instead of midday. Two vrats, one tithi, two different days. Both are correct — they simply follow different rules. Check what your family tradition observes.

Who Is Skanda? The Many Names of One Lord

Few deities in Sanatan Dharma carry as many names as this one, and each name is a different memory of him.

  • Skanda — the one who surges forth, from the very force of his birth
  • Kartikeya — son of the Krittikas, the six star-mothers who nursed him
  • Shanmukha / Shadanana — the six-faced one
  • Murugan — the Tamil name, meaning beauty, youth, divine fragrance
  • Subramanya — dear to the Brahman, the auspicious one
  • Kumara — the eternal youth, forever young
  • Devasenapati — commander of the armies of the devas
  • Velayudhan — the one who wields the Vel, the divine spear

In the south he is the beloved family deity of millions of households. In the north he is worshipped more sparingly — in Haryana's Pehowa, in the high Kartik Swami temple above Rudraprayag — and some North Indian traditions hold that women do not take darshan of his idol, a custom rooted in his fierce brahmachari vow after a family quarrel. The south knows no such rule; there, mothers carry their infants to Palani and Tiruchendur by the thousand.

The Katha: How Skanda Was Born

The demon who chose his own death

The asura Tarakasura performed such severe tapasya that Brahma himself appeared before him. Immortality was refused — nothing born may escape death. So Tarakasura, clever and confident, asked for the next best thing: let me be killed only by a son of Shiva.

It seemed like immortality by another route. Sati had left her body. Shiva had withdrawn into the Himalaya in a samadhi so deep that the seasons themselves did not disturb him. A meditating ascetic does not father sons. Tarakasura took his boon and began to tear the three worlds apart.

The spark that Agni could not hold

Parvati, Sati reborn, undertook her own great tapasya to reach Shiva. When at last the Lord opened his eyes and the divine union began, the devas grew anxious — the child that would come carried such power that the universe might not survive its gestation. Agni, sent by Indra, approached and received the sacred spark of Shiva's tejas.

It burned him. Agni, the fire god himself, could not hold it. He gave it to Ganga, and even the river could not bear it. She set it down at last in a reed forest — Sara-vana — on the slopes of the mountain, and there the tejas divided into six brilliant infants resting on six lotuses.

Six mothers, six faces, one Lord

The six Krittikas — the star-mothers of the Pleiades, wives of the Saptarishis — found the children and each took one to nurse. When Parvati came and gathered all six to her heart in one embrace, the six became one body with six faces — so that no mother's child would be lost, and each Krittika could still feed the son she had raised.

From the reed forest he takes the name Saravanabhava. From the Krittikas, Kartikeya. From his mother's embrace, the six faces that every icon of him still shows.

The Vel and the victory

Parvati placed in his hand the Vel — a spear of pure shakti, her own power given form. Barely a child, Skanda was made commander of the celestial armies. He rode out on his peacock, the rooster-banner snapping above him, and on the sixth day of battle he destroyed Tarakasura and, in the southern telling, the great asura Surapadman at the sea-shore of Tiruchendur.

When Surapadman took the form of a mango tree to hide, Skanda split it with the Vel — and rather than killing what remained, he transformed the two halves into his peacock mount and his rooster flag. That is the detail worth sitting with. The enemy was not annihilated. He was converted into the Lord's own vehicle and his own banner. Skanda does not merely defeat what opposes him; he puts it to work.

⏰ The victory took six days — which is why Shashthi, the sixth tithi, belongs to Skanda. Every Shukla Paksha Shashthi of every month is his. The grandest of them, the six-day Kanda Sashti with Soorasamharam at Tiruchendur, runs 10–15 November 2026, with Tiru Kalyanam on 16 November.

Skanda Sashti Vrat Vidhi: How to Observe

The vrat is simple. What it asks for is sincerity and a steady mind, not elaborate arrangements.

  1. Snan and sankalp. Bathe before sunrise. Wear clean clothes — red, saffron or yellow are considered dear to Kartikeya. Standing before your altar with water and akshat in your right palm, take the sankalp: state your name, your gotra if you know it, and the resolve to keep the Skanda Sashti vrat today.
  2. Prepare the sthaan. Clean the puja space and spread a red cloth. Place an image or idol of Kartikeya — with his Vel and peacock — facing east or north-east. If you have no Kartikeya murti, a picture is entirely sufficient; many households place him beside Shiva and Parvati.
  3. Kalash sthapana. Fill a copper kalash with clean water and a little Gangajal, place mango leaves and a coconut on top, and set it to the right of the murti.
  4. Abhishek. Bathe the murti with water, then panchamrit if available, then clean water again. Wipe dry with a soft cloth.
  5. Shodashopachar puja. Offer, in order: chandan tilak, roli, akshat, flowers, dhoop and a ghee lamp. Red flowers — especially hibiscus and red oleander — are traditional for Murugan.
  6. Naivedya. Offer fruit, panchmeva, and something made with jaggery. In the south, panchamrit and sweet pongal are classic offerings.
  7. Path and japa. Read the Skanda birth katha aloud. Then chant the Shadakshara mantra — Om Saravanabhava — 108 times on a mala. If you know the Subramanya Ashtakam or Kanda Shashti Kavacham, recite it now.
  8. Aarti. Perform aarti with camphor on an aarti thali, blow the shankh, and distribute prasad.
  9. Evening and parana. Light a lamp again at dusk. Break the fast after the evening puja with satvik food, or the next morning after offering to the Lord — whichever your family follows.

Skanda Sashti and Mangal: Why Astrologers Recommend This Vrat

In Vedic jyotish, Kartikeya is the adhidevata of Mangal — the presiding deity of Mars. Mangal governs courage, energy, land, brothers, blood and the capacity to act. When Mangal sits badly in a chart — as Mangal dosha or Kuja dosha, or afflicted in the sixth, eighth or twelfth house — the classical remedies almost always include the worship of Kartikeya, and specifically the keeping of Shashthi vrats.

This is why Skanda Sashti is traditionally prescribed for delayed or troubled marriage, for litigation and disputes, for courage before an examination or a court date, for brothers who have fallen out, and for those who feel their energy has turned against them. Tuesday-born Mangal problems and Shashthi tithi worship belong to the same remedial family.

📖 Is Mangal actually troubling your chart — or is it something else?

Before you begin any remedial vrat, it is worth knowing what your kundli actually says. Our detailed Kundali Analysis reads your birth chart house by house — Mangal dosha, dasha periods, marriage and career timing — and tells you which remedies genuinely apply to you rather than generic advice.

Where Skanda Is Worshipped

The Arupadai Veedu — his six battle camps

Tamil tradition holds six temples as Murugan's own abodes, one for each of his faces:

  • Thirupparankundram, Madurai — where he married Devasena
  • Tiruchendur, on the sea — where Surapadman fell
  • Palani — where he stands as the renunciate Dhandayuthapani with only a staff
  • Swamimalai — where the son taught the Pranava mantra to his own father Shiva
  • Thiruthani — where he found peace after the war, and married Valli
  • Pazhamudircholai — the forest shrine of the Tamil Sangam poets

Beyond the south

Kukke Subramanya in Karnataka draws lakhs for Sarpa dosha remedies. Kartik Swami temple near Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand sits on a knife-edge ridge at over 3,000 metres — one of the very few major Kartikeya shrines in the Himalaya. Pehowa in Haryana preserves the old North Indian Kartikeya worship. And the diaspora has carried him further still — Batu Caves in Malaysia, and Murugan temples across Singapore, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, London and Toronto.

Mantras for Skanda Sashti

Shadakshara Mantra (six syllables, for six faces):
ॐ शरवणभव — Om Sharavanabhava

Beeja Mantra:
ॐ स्कन्दाय नमः — Om Skandaya Namah

Subramanya Mantra:
ॐ श्री सुब्रह्मण्याय नमः — Om Shri Subramanyaya Namah

Kartikeya Gayatri:
ॐ तत्पुरुषाय विद्महे महासेनाय धीमहि। तन्नो षण्मुखः प्रचोदयात्॥

Chant any one of these 108 times during the midday puja. The Shadakshara is the simplest and the most widely used — six syllables for six faces, and short enough that children learn it in an afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Skanda Sashti in September 2026?
Skanda Sashti falls on Wednesday, 16 September 2026. The Shashthi tithi begins at 08:59 AM on 16 September and ends at 10:47 AM on 17 September. Since the vrat follows the midday-prevailing tithi, it is observed on 16 September.

Is Skanda Sashti the same as the six-day Kanda Sashti festival?
No. Every Shukla Paksha Shashthi of every month is a Skanda Sashti vrat. The famous six-day Kanda Sashti with the Soorasamharam reenactment at Tiruchendur is the Kartik-month one, which in 2026 runs 10–15 November, with Tiru Kalyanam on 16 November. The September vrat is the monthly observance — smaller, but the same Lord and the same fruit.

Can women keep the Skanda Sashti vrat?
Yes. In South India women keep this vrat in large numbers, particularly for the wellbeing of sons and brothers and for relief from Mangal dosha. A few North Indian households follow a custom of women not taking darshan of the Kartikeya idol; if that is your family tradition, keep the fast, chant the mantra and offer the lamp without approaching the murti directly.

What should I eat during the Skanda Sashti fast?
Most devotees keep a phalahar fast — fruit, milk, curd, coconut water, and vrat-friendly items such as sabudana or kuttu flour cooked with sendha namak. Grains, pulses, onion, garlic and ordinary salt are avoided. Nirjala fasting is optional and should only be attempted by those in good health.

What do people pray to Kartikeya for?
Courage, victory over enemies and obstacles, relief from Mangal and Sarpa dosha, success in competitive examinations and court matters, healing, protection of children, and the removal of ego. He is the deity people turn to when they need the strength to face something, not the means to avoid it.

I have no Kartikeya idol at home. Can I still keep the vrat?
Absolutely. A printed image, or even worship of Shiva and Parvati with the Skanda mantra, is entirely valid. What the vrat asks for is the fast, the lamp, the katha and the japa. Bhava matters more than the murti.

A Closing Thought

There is a reason the Puranas made Skanda a child. Not an aged sage, not a seasoned general — a boy, barely six days old, handed a spear by his mother and sent to face what the entire assembly of devas could not.

The message has never needed decoding. You will rarely feel ready. The strength arrives in the doing, not before it. And whatever you defeat need not be destroyed — like Surapadman turned into peacock and banner, the thing that fought you hardest can end up carrying you.

On 16 September, light a lamp, chant Om Saravanabhava six times six, and ask the eternal Kumara for exactly what he is known to give.
