Sawan Somvar Vrat Katha | सम्पूर्ण कथा

In a certain city there lived a wealthy merchant. He had wealth beyond counting, servants, land and respect — but no child. The absence hollowed out every comfort he owned.

Seeking a son, he began observing the Somvar vrat of Lord Shiva with total sincerity. Every Monday he fasted, performed jalabhishek on the Shivling, and prayed in the temple with unwavering faith.

Goddess Parvati, moved by his devotion, said to Lord Shiva: “This man worships you with such a pure heart. Please fulfil his wish.” Lord Shiva replied, “Parvati, in his destiny there is no son. What is not written cannot simply be given.” But Parvati persisted, as a mother would. At last Mahadev said, “Very well. He may have a son — but the child will live only twelve years. This I cannot change.”

In time a son was born. There was great celebration, but the merchant carried the knowledge of the boy's fate in silence, telling no one, not even the child's mother.

When the boy neared twelve, the merchant sent him to Kashi with his maternal uncle to study, giving them gold to distribute in charity along the way. On their journey they stopped in a city where a royal wedding was underway. The bridegroom, it turned out, was blind in one eye — and his family, fearing the bride's family would refuse, begged the merchant's handsome son to sit in the groom's place for the ceremony.

The boy agreed. The wedding was performed. But being honest, before departing he wrote the truth on the bride's shawl: “I was married to you, but I am going to Kashi to study. The groom you will be sent with is blind in one eye.” The bride read it and refused to leave with the other family. The truth came out, and her parents kept her at home.

The boy continued to Kashi. There, on the day he completed his twelfth year, he lay down and his life left him. His uncle wept aloud over the body.

At that very moment Lord Shiva and Parvati were passing. Parvati heard the crying and said, “Mahadev, this weeping is unbearable. Please help.” Shiva replied, “Parvati, this is the same boy. His allotted twelve years are complete.” But Parvati would not accept it. “Grant him life,” she pleaded. “His parents worshipped you so faithfully. They will not survive this grief.”

Moved by her compassion and by the merchant's years of unbroken devotion, Lord Shiva placed His grace upon the boy and restored him to life.

The boy returned home with his uncle. On the way they passed the same city, where the king recognised him and joyfully sent his daughter — the bride who had refused to be deceived — home with him with great honour. The merchant and his wife, who had vowed to end their own lives if their son did not return, saw him arrive alive and married. Their joy was beyond describing.

From that day, the Sawan Somvar vrat has been kept by devotees everywhere — for it is the vrat that moved Mahadev to rewrite what fate itself had written.

1. Read in the evening, after the day's fast and before parana.
2. Bathe and sit facing north or east before a Shivling or Shiva image.
3. Light a desi ghee diya and incense before beginning.
4. Keep water, akshat, flowers and bel patra on the altar during the reading.
5. Read aloud so others may hear — listening carries the same merit.
6. Conclude with Shiv aarti using an aarti thali and the blowing of a shankh. Many households recite the Shiv Chalisa (₹89) just before the aarti.
