Sawan Mein Kya Na Karein: Complete Dos and Don'ts of Shravan 2026
Shravan is not an ordinary month. For thirty days the entire tradition shifts — diets change, weddings pause, saints stop travelling, and millions take up vows they keep nowhere else in the year. Understanding what to avoid in Sawan (सावन में क्या न करें) is as much a part of the month as the jalabhishek itself.
Some of these rules are devotional. Others, as you will see, are remarkably practical seasonal wisdom encoded as tradition. Here is the complete guide.
What NOT to Do in Sawan | सावन में क्या न करें
1. Avoid non-vegetarian food and alcohol
The most universally observed rule. Shravan is a month of sattvic living, and tamasic foods are set aside entirely. Beyond the devotional reason, the monsoon is the breeding season for many species and the period when meat spoils fastest — abstention has always carried practical sense.
2. Avoid green leafy vegetables
Saag, palak and other leafy greens are traditionally avoided through Shravan. In monsoon humidity these plants harbour insects, larvae and bacteria invisible to the eye, and Ayurveda holds that digestive fire is at its weakest in this season.
3. Avoid curd and fermented foods
Curd, buttermilk and fermented items increase kapha and cause congestion in damp weather. Milk is preferred throughout the month.
4. Avoid brinjal (baingan)
Brinjal is regarded as impure in Shravan by long custom, and it is also particularly prone to worm infestation during the monsoon.
5. Do not cut hair, nails or shave on Mondays
Many families avoid grooming on Sawan Somvar, and some for the whole month, treating the body as ritually prepared for worship.
6. Avoid weddings and new auspicious beginnings
Shravan falls within Chaturmas, the four months when Lord Vishnu is said to be in yogic sleep (which began with Devshayani Ekadashi). Marriages, griha pravesh and other major sanskars are traditionally postponed until Devuthani Ekadashi in Kartik.
7. Never offer Tulsi, haldi or coconut water on a Shivling
These are prohibited in Shiva worship for scriptural reasons rooted in the Puranas. Offer water, bel patra, chandan and vibhuti instead. Read the full list and the reason behind each →
8. Avoid anger, harsh speech and dishonesty
The inner discipline matters more than the dietary one. A fast kept with a bitter tongue is considered incomplete.
9. Do not sleep during the day
Daytime sleep is discouraged for those keeping vrat, as it is believed to dull the sattvic quality the month is meant to cultivate.
10. Do not disrespect or harm snakes
Especially around Nag Panchami (17 August 2026). Serpents are sacred to Lord Shiva, who wears Vasuki around His neck.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can we eat non-veg in Sawan?
It is avoided entirely by tradition throughout the month, for both devotional and seasonal-health reasons.
Why are green vegetables avoided in Shravan?
Monsoon humidity makes leafy greens prone to insects and bacteria, and Ayurveda holds digestion is weakest in this season. The rule is seasonal wisdom preserved as tradition.
Can marriages take place in Sawan?
Traditionally no. Shravan falls in Chaturmas, when Lord Vishnu is in yogic sleep, so weddings are postponed until Devuthani Ekadashi in Kartik.
Is it necessary to fast all four Mondays?
No. Keep as many as you can sustain. Sincerity matters more than count, and a gentler fast is fully valid.
Can we cut hair in Sawan?
Many families avoid it on Mondays or through the month. This is customary rather than scripturally mandated — follow your family tradition.
What is the single most important thing to do in Sawan?
Daily jalabhishek on the Shivling with water or Gangajal, while chanting Om Namah Shivaya.
