Sawan Shivratri 2026: Date, Nishita Kaal Muhurat & Jalabhishek Vidhi

Of the twelve Masik Shivratris in a year, none carries the charge of the one that falls in Shravan. Sawan Shivratri — सावन शिवरात्रि — is the night when Lord Shiva is said to be closest to His devotees, when a single lota of water poured on the Shivling is believed to equal the merit of a hundred ordinary offerings. For the crores of kanwariyas who have walked barefoot carrying Gangajal, this is the night the entire journey has been building toward.

In Sawan 2026 this most powerful of nights falls in the second week of August. Below you will find the exact Nishita Kaal muhurat, the complete jalabhishek vidhi, fasting rules, and the samagri you should keep ready.

⏰ Sawan Shivratri 2026 falls on Tuesday, 11 August 2026. The Nishita Kaal puja muhurat is 12:05 AM to 12:48 AM (intervening night of 11–12 August). Vrat parana is after 5:49 AM on 12 August.

Sawan Shivratri 2026 Date & Muhurat | सावन शिवरात्रि तिथि

Shivratri is unique among Hindu observances in that its most powerful worship happens at night, not at dawn. The Nishita Kaal — the deep middle of the night — is when Lord Shiva is believed to have manifested as the infinite Jyotirlinga. Puja performed in this window carries the greatest merit.

Event Date & Time (IST)
Sawan Shivratri Vrat Tuesday, 11 August 2026
Nishita Kaal Puja Muhurat 12:05 AM – 12:48 AM (night of 11–12 Aug)
Vrat Parana (break fast) After 5:49 AM, 12 August 2026
Kanwar Yatra concludes 11 August 2026

Note that Sawan Shivratri also marks the culmination of the Kanwar Yatra, which began on 30 July. Millions of kanwariyas time their entire pilgrimage so that the Gangajal they carry is poured on the Shivling on precisely this night.

Why Sawan Shivratri Is So Powerful | महत्व

Shravan is Lord Shiva's own month. The Puranas recount that during the Samudra Manthan — the churning of the cosmic ocean — the deadly Halahala poison emerged, threatening to destroy all creation. Lord Shiva drank it to save the universe, holding it in His throat, which turned blue and earned Him the name Neelkanth.

To cool the burning effect of that poison, the devas poured water over Him continuously. This is the origin of jalabhishek — and it is why offering water to the Shivling during Shravan is considered the single most beloved act of worship. The month of Sawan is when this cooling offering is most needed, and Shivratri is its most potent night.

Jalabhishek Vidhi — Step by Step | जलाभिषेक विधि

  1. Purify yourself and the space: Bathe before the puja and sprinkle Gangajal around the altar.
  2. Fill the kalash: Pour Gangajal (mixed with clean water if needed) into a pure copper kalash. Copper is traditionally prescribed for Shiva abhishek.
  3. Panchamrit abhishek: Offer in this order — milk, curd, desi ghee, honey, and sugar — then finish with pure water or Gangajal.
  4. Chant while pouring: Recite “Om Namah Shivaya” continuously, or the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra on a rudraksha mala, keeping the stream of water unbroken.
  5. Offer bel patra: Place three-leafed bel patra on the Shivling with the smooth side down. Add dhatura, white flowers, itra and chandan.
  6. Apply vibhuti: Mark the tripundra with vibhuti (bhasm) on your own forehead.
  7. Light the lamp & aarti: Light a ghee diya and Bhimseni kapoor, then perform Shiv aarti.
  8. Four-prahar puja: The most devoted observe puja in all four prahars of the night, with the Nishita Kaal worship being the most important.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Sawan Shivratri 2026?
Tuesday, 11 August 2026. The Nishita Kaal puja muhurat is 12:05 AM to 12:48 AM on the intervening night of 11–12 August.

What time should I do the Shivratri puja?
The Nishita Kaal window (12:05–12:48 AM) is most auspicious. Devotees who cannot stay awake may perform puja in the first prahar of the evening instead.

What should never be offered on a Shivling?
Tulsi leaves, haldi, kumkum, coconut water and ketaki flowers are traditionally prohibited. Read the full list and the reason behind each →

Can water alone be offered if I have nothing else?
Yes. Lord Shiva is called Bholenath — the innocent one — precisely because He is pleased by the simplest offering. A lota of clean water given with love is complete worship.

When do I break the Shivratri fast?
The parana is done after sunrise on the next day — after 5:49 AM on 12 August 2026, following the completion of the night puja.

Is Sawan Shivratri different from Mahashivratri?
Yes. Mahashivratri falls in Phalgun (Feb–March) and is the greatest of all. Sawan Shivratri is the Masik Shivratri of Shravan month and carries special potency because it falls in Shiva's own month.

Pour Your Devotion on the Shivling This Sawan

Sawan Shivratri asks nothing complicated of you — only water, a bel patra, and a heart that remembers Neelkanth, who drank poison so the world might live. As 11 August approaches, keep your Gangajal and kalash ready, and let the unbroken stream of your abhishek carry every burden away.
