Sawan Somvar Vrat Rules 2026: What to Eat, What to Avoid

Keeping a Sawan Somvar vrat is simple in spirit but full of practical questions. Can I drink tea? Is curd allowed? What about salt? Why do elders say no green vegetables in Shravan? If you are fasting this Sawan — especially for the first time — this guide answers all of it.

The Sawan Somvar vrat (सावन सोमवार व्रत) is kept by unmarried girls seeking a good husband, by married women for their husband's long life, and by devotees of every kind seeking Mahadev's grace. The fast is flexible by design — Shiva is Bholenath, and sincerity matters more than severity.

⏰ Sawan 2026 runs 30 July – 28 August. The four Somvar vrats fall on Monday 3, 10, 17 and 24 August 2026. Note that 17 August is also Nag Panchami — a rare and powerful combination.

The Three Types of Sawan Somvar Fast | व्रत के प्रकार

Type What it involves Suited to
Nirjala No food and no water all day The physically strong, no health conditions
Phalahar Fruits, milk, water; one sattvic meal in the evening Most devotees — the common choice
Saatvik / Ek Bhukt One simple vegetarian meal after evening puja Elderly, unwell, pregnant, students, working people

There is no spiritual penalty for choosing a gentler form. The scriptures repeatedly stress that a vrat which damages your health defeats its own purpose.

Sawan Somvar or 16 Somvar — Which Vrat Should You Keep?

This is the single most common question of the month, because Sawan is the traditional time to begin the Solah Somvar vrat. The two are not the same thing:

  • Sawan Somvar Vrat — the four Mondays of Shravan only (3, 10, 17, 24 August 2026). A complete vrat in itself, ending with the month.
  • Solah (16) Somvar Vrat — sixteen consecutive Mondays, concluded with a formal udyapan ceremony. Beginning it on the first Monday of Sawan is considered the most auspicious start of all, which is why so many devotees take the sankalp in this month.

If you have been meaning to begin the 16 Somvar vrat, 3 August 2026 is the day to take your sankalp.

What You CAN Eat | क्या खा सकते हैं

  • Fruits — all seasonal fruits, especially banana, apple, papaya
  • Milk and milk products — milk, paneer, malai, makhana kheer
  • Vrat flours — kuttu (buckwheat), singhara (water chestnut), rajgira (amaranth)
  • Sabudana — khichdi, vada, kheer
  • Samak rice (barnyard millet)
  • Vrat-friendly vegetables — potato, sweet potato, pumpkin, arbi, lauki
  • Sendha namak (rock salt) only — never regular table salt
  • Dry fruits — makhana, almonds, and panchmeva
  • Pure desi ghee for cooking — desi ghee is always preferred over refined oil

What You MUST Avoid | क्या नहीं खाना

  • All grains — wheat, rice, maida, besan, all pulses and dals
  • Onion and garlic — considered tamasic, strictly avoided
  • Non-vegetarian food, eggs, alcohol, tobacco
  • Regular salt — use sendha namak instead
  • Green leafy vegetables — traditionally avoided through Shravan
  • Brinjal — avoided in Sawan by long custom

Why No Green Vegetables and Curd in Sawan?

This rule has a beautifully practical logic behind it. Shravan falls at the height of the monsoon. Humidity is extreme, sunlight is scarce, and leafy greens harbour insects, larvae and bacteria in a way they do not in drier months. Digestive fire (agni) is also considered weakest during the monsoon in Ayurveda.

Curd and fermented foods are avoided for the same reason — they increase kapha and cause congestion in damp weather. What looks like a religious restriction is, in fact, ancient seasonal dietary wisdom preserved in the form of a vow.

How to Keep the Vrat — Full Day Routine

  1. Wake in Brahma Muhurat and bathe before sunrise.
  2. Take the sankalp — state your intention and how many Somvars you will keep.
  3. Perform jalabhishek on the Shivling with Gangajal, milk and bel patra.
  4. Chant Om Namah Shivaya and the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra on a rudraksha mala.
  5. Read the Sawan Somvar vrat katha in the evening before breaking the fast.
  6. Evening aarti with an aarti thali and bhog offering.
  7. Break the fast after the evening puja with prasad, then a simple sattvic meal.

Who Should Be Careful

Fasting is an offering, not an endurance test. Pregnant and nursing women, people with diabetes, low blood pressure, acidity or any chronic condition, and children should choose the phalahar or one-meal form rather than nirjala — or simply perform the puja without fasting at all. Lord Shiva asks for devotion, never for harm to the body He gave you.

If health or distance prevents you from keeping the vrat or reaching a temple, you can still have the puja performed in your name — a Solah Somvar Sankalp Puja includes your name and gotra in the sankalp, with a dedicated option covering all four Sawan Somvars.

Frequently Asked Questions

When are the Sawan Somvar vrats in 2026?
Monday 3, 10, 17 and 24 August 2026. Sawan runs from 30 July to 28 August.

Should I keep Sawan Somvar or 16 Somvar vrat?
Sawan Somvar covers only the four Mondays of Shravan. The 16 Somvar vrat runs sixteen consecutive Mondays and ends with udyapan. Sawan is the most auspicious time to begin the 16 Somvar vrat, so many devotees start on 3 August.

Can I drink tea or coffee during the vrat?
Plain milk tea without regular salt is generally accepted in a phalahar fast, though the strictest observers avoid it. Coffee is best avoided.

Can I eat curd during Sawan?
Curd is traditionally avoided through the whole month of Shravan, for both ritual and monsoon-digestion reasons. Milk is preferred.

Why is sendha namak used instead of normal salt?
Rock salt is unprocessed and considered sattvic and pure, whereas refined table salt is regarded as processed and unsuitable for vrat food.

Can I keep the vrat during menstruation?
Practices vary by family. Many women continue the fast and mental chanting while avoiding direct touching of the idol or Shivling. Follow your family tradition without guilt.

What if I accidentally eat something forbidden?
Simply resume the fast with a sincere apology to Mahadev. Intent governs the vrat; an honest mistake does not break it.

Fast with Devotion, Not with Fear

The Sawan Somvar vrat was never meant to be a burden. It is a way to bring discipline, lightness and remembrance into the most sacred month of the year. Choose the form your body can sustain, keep your heart on Mahadev, and the vrat is complete.
