Raksha Bandhan 2026: Rakhi Muhurat, Bhadra Timing & Shravani Upakarma
Sawan closes on its most joyful note. Raksha Bandhan — the festival of the protective thread — falls on Shravan Purnima, the full moon that ends the sacred month. The same day carries a second, quieter observance that far fewer people know about: Shravani Upakarma, the one day in the year when the sacred thread is ritually changed.
Raksha Bandhan 2026 comes with unusually good news on timing. In most years, Bhadra — the inauspicious period during which rakhi must never be tied — eats into the morning and forces families to wait. Not this year.
Raksha Bandhan 2026 Muhurat | राखी मुहूर्त
| Event | Date & Time (IST) |
|---|---|
| Raksha Bandhan | Friday, 28 August 2026 |
| Rakhi Muhurat | Sunrise until 9:48 AM |
| Purnima Tithi Ends | 9:48 AM, 28 August 2026 |
| Bhadra period | 27 August, 9:09 AM – 9:32 PM (previous day) |
| Also this day | Shravan Purnima; Shravani Upakarma; Sawan ends |
Important: the Purnima tithi ends at 9:48 AM. Because rakhi should be tied while Purnima is running, the window this year is the early morning — not the afternoon as in many previous years. Plan accordingly.
Why Bhadra Matters | भद्रा काल
Bhadra is the inauspicious half of the Vishti Karana, personified in tradition as the fierce daughter of Surya. Scripture holds that no auspicious act — especially the tying of rakhi — should be performed during Bhadra.
The warning is rooted in the Ramayana: it is said that Shurpanakha tied a rakhi to Ravana during Bhadra, and that this inauspicious timing contributed to his eventual destruction. In 2026, Bhadra is confined entirely to 27 August and ends the night before, so the whole of Raksha Bandhan morning is clear — a genuinely fortunate alignment.

Shravani Upakarma: The Sacred Thread Day | उपाकर्म
Shravan Purnima carries a second observance that predates the popular festival. Shravani Upakarma (also called Janeu Purnima or Avani Avittam in the South) is the single day of the year on which the janeu — the sacred thread — is ceremonially replaced.
The ritual has three parts:
- Prayaschitta — atonement for any lapse in observance during the past year, and a holy bath with Gangajal.
- Rishi Tarpan — offerings of water to the sapta-rishis who preserved the Vedas.
- Yajnopavita Dharana — the wearing of the new janeu and the discarding of the old, accompanied by the Gayatri Mantra.
The day also traditionally marks the start of the annual Vedic study period. In many communities the Gayatri Mantra is chanted 1,008 times as part of the observance.
The one day each year the sacred thread is changed. Authentic, correctly spun janeu for Upakarma, upanayan sanskar and every ritual occasion — available in packs of 1 and 5.

The Stories Behind Raksha Bandhan | कथाएँ
Indra and Sachi: When Indra faced defeat by the asuras, his wife Sachi had a protective thread consecrated by prayer and tied it on his wrist. He returned victorious. This is the earliest form of the raksha sutra — notably tied by a wife, not a sister.
Draupadi and Krishna: When Lord Krishna cut his finger, Draupadi tore a strip from her saree and bound the wound without hesitation. Krishna vowed to repay her — and did so during her disrobing in the Kaurava court, when her garment became endless.
King Bali and Lakshmi: When Lord Vishnu remained in Bali's realm as a guardian, Goddess Lakshmi tied a rakhi to Bali, made him her brother, and asked for her husband's return as her gift.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is Raksha Bandhan 2026 and what is the muhurat?
Friday, 28 August 2026. Tie the rakhi from sunrise until 9:48 AM, when the Purnima tithi ends.
Is there Bhadra on Raksha Bandhan 2026?
No. Bhadra falls entirely on 27 August (9:09 AM – 9:32 PM) and ends the previous night, leaving the whole of the 28th morning clear.
Why can rakhi not be tied during Bhadra?
Bhadra is considered inauspicious for all ceremonial acts. Tradition holds that Shurpanakha tied rakhi to Ravana during Bhadra, contributing to his downfall.
On which wrist is the rakhi tied?
The right wrist, which is used for auspicious acts and giving.
What is Shravani Upakarma?
The annual ritual on Shravan Purnima in which the sacred thread (janeu) is replaced, along with rishi tarpan and atonement rites.
Can rakhi be tied to someone who is not a biological brother?
Yes. The thread creates the bond of protection rather than requiring it — as Draupadi did with Krishna and Lakshmi with King Bali.
The Thread That Closes the Sacred Month
Raksha Bandhan brings Sawan to a close in the best possible way — with family gathered, a thread tied, and a promise made. Note the early window this year: the muhurat closes at 9:48 AM, so keep your thali ready the night before.
Raksha Bandhan is a prayer for protection and long life. Have a Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap performed in your family's name and gotra for health, protection and well-being.
