Hariyali Teej 2026: Date, Vrat Vidhi, Katha & Shringar Guide

Of all the vrats kept in Sawan, none is as green, as joyful or as full of song as Hariyali Teej. Named for the hariyali — the lush green the monsoon brings — this is the day married women fast for their husbands' long life and unmarried girls pray for a partner like Mahadev Himself. Swings hang from trees, hands are covered in mehendi, and green bangles catch the light everywhere.

Hariyali Teej celebrates the moment Goddess Parvati's century-spanning penance finally succeeded, and Lord Shiva accepted her as His wife. It is, at heart, a festival about devotion that refuses to give up.

⏰ Hariyali Teej 2026 is on Saturday, 15 August 2026. Tritiya Tithi begins 6:46 PM on 14 August and ends 5:28 PM on 15 August. Puja is performed in the morning, with the main worship in the evening (pradosh kaal).

The Katha: Parvati's 108 Births | कथा

Goddess Parvati, in her earlier birth as Sati, had given up her life at her father Daksha's yagna. Reborn as the daughter of Himalaya, she resolved to win Lord Shiva as her husband once again.

She went into the forest and undertook penance of extraordinary severity. She stood on one foot for years. She survived on fallen leaves, and then gave up even those — earning the name Aparna, “she who does not even take a leaf.” Through summer heat, monsoon storms and winter cold she continued, unmoved.

Her father, distressed, wished to marry her to Lord Vishnu instead. Parvati refused and fled deeper into the forest with her friend, where she fashioned a Shivling of sand and worshipped it with total absorption on the Tritiya of Shukla Paksha in Shravan.

It was this worship, on this very day, that Lord Shiva finally accepted. He appeared before her and granted her wish to be His wife forever. It is said Parvati took 108 births before her devotion bore fruit — which is why women keep this vrat believing no sincere prayer for a happy married life goes unanswered.

Hariyali Teej Vrat Vidhi | व्रत विधि

  1. Wake early and bathe, then wear green clothes — the colour of Teej, of fertility and of the monsoon earth.
  2. Complete the solah shringar including mehendi, green bangles and sindoor.
  3. Take the sankalp for a nirjala (waterless) fast, or phalahar if health requires.
  4. Prepare the altar: Make a Shivling and Parvati idol from clean sand or clay, as Parvati herself did — or use a stone Shivling.
  5. Perform the puja: Offer Gangajal, bel patra, dhatura and flowers to Shiva; offer haldi ki ganth, roli-kumkum, sindoor, bangles and shringar items (16 Shringar Kit, ₹179) to Maa Parvati.
  6. Tie the mauli: Offer mauli around the sand Shivling and wear it on your wrist.
  7. Read the Teej katha in the evening during pradosh kaal, with other women of the household.
  8. Aarti and jhula: Sing Teej geet, swing on decorated jhulas, and perform aarti with an aarti thali — the Shiva-Parvati aartis sung on this evening are all collected in the Sampoorn Aarti Sangrah (₹129).
  9. Break the fast the next morning after offering prayers, or after moonrise per family custom — many families keep a Vratam Dry Fruit Falhari Mixture (₹360) ready for that parana plate.

Why Green? | हरा रंग क्यों

Green is the colour of Shravan itself — of earth reborn after the first rains, of fertility, growth and new life. It is associated with Budh (Mercury) and with Goddess Parvati in her nurturing aspect. Wearing green on Teej is a way of aligning with the season's own promise: that what seemed barren will bloom again.

Devotion That Waited 108 Lifetimes

Hariyali Teej is a reminder that the deepest prayers are sometimes the slowest answered — and that they are answered. As you apply your mehendi and wear your green this 15 August, remember the goddess who gave up even fallen leaves, and did not stop.

🌸 For the Girls Keeping Teej With a Marriage Prayer

Parvati's tapasya is the reason unmarried girls keep this vrat at all. Where a proposal keeps slipping away, tradition turns to Devi Katyayani — and to the sindoor kept only for Gauri's own shringar.
