The Katha

One well-known story tells of a farmer ploughing his field who accidentally killed several young serpents beneath the soil. The mother serpent, returning to find her children dead, sought revenge and killed the farmer and his family — sparing only a daughter who had married into another village.

When the serpent came for her too, she found the young woman had placed a bowl of milk before her with folded hands, worshipping her with genuine reverence rather than fear. Moved, the serpent forgave the family, restored them to life, and blessed the household. From that day, offering milk to serpents on Panchami became the custom — an act of asking forgiveness for the harm humans do to creatures they do not understand.

Nag Panchami Puja Vidhi | पूजा विधि

1. Bathe early and complete the puja within the 6:04–8:39 AM muhurat.
2. Draw the Nag figure: Make an image of a serpent on the wall or a wooden plank using chandan paste, or place a silver/clay Nag idol.
3. Purify: Sprinkle Gangajal on the image and around the altar.
4. Offer milk: Place a bowl of raw milk before the Nag image — the central offering of the day.
5. Tilak and akshat: Apply roli-kumkum, offer whole akshat, durva grass and flowers.
6. Light a ghee diya and offer dhoop.
7. Chant: “Om Bhujangeshaya Vidmahe, Sarparajaya Dheemahi, Tanno Naga Prachodayat” and the Nag Gayatri.
8. Since it is also Sawan Somvar, perform jalabhishek on the Shivling the same morning — the combined merit is considered extraordinary.
9. Read the katha and conclude with aarti using an aarti thali.

Kaal Sarp Dosh: What It Is and the Remedies

In Vedic astrology, Kaal Sarp Dosh is said to form when all seven main planets fall between Rahu and Ketu in the birth chart. Those who have it often describe recurring obstacles, delays in marriage or career, unexplained financial blocks, and disturbed sleep or recurring dreams of snakes.

Nag Panchami is regarded as the most auspicious day of the entire year for Kaal Sarp remedies. Traditional upay include:

• Offer raw milk mixed with Gangajal on a Shivling on this day
• Perform Rudrabhishek and chant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra 108 times on a rudraksha mala
• Worship a silver Nag-Nagin pair and donate it at a Shiva temple. Because Kaal Sarp Dosh sits entirely on the Rahu–Ketu axis, many families also keep the two nodal shankhs in the mandir on this day — a Rahu Shankh (₹899) and a Ketu Shankh (₹899), worshipped together so that both ends of the axis are honoured.

• Do not fry food in a hot tawa or kadhai — many households avoid frying entirely this day.
• Never harm or kill a snake, and do not force milk on live snakes — milk is harmful to them. Offer it to the idol or image instead.
• Avoid non-vegetarian food and alcohol, as on every Sawan day.
