Why the confusion: 8 or 9 November?

Amavasya runs from 11:27 AM on Sunday 8 November to 12:31 PM on Monday 9 November. Because Amavasya is the tithi at sunrise on 9 November, calendars that go by udaya tithi show 9 November.

Lakshmi Puja, however, is a Pradosh-vyapini observance. Dharma Sindhu, Nirnaya Sindhu and Vratraj prescribe it after sunset while Amavasya prevails. On 8 November Amavasya covers the whole Pradosh Kaal (5:31–8:09 PM); on 9 November it ends at 12:31 PM, well before sunset. So Diwali is 8 November.

Two more things add to the confusion. Narak Chaturdashi is the same morning (see our Choti Diwali guide), and 9 November is listed for "Diwali Snan / Devpuja", a morning bath on Amavasya, not Lakshmi Puja. Some holiday calendars also list the office holiday on a different day. A holiday list is not a puja calendar.

Which muhurat should I choose?

Households: 5:54–7:50 PM, when Pradosh Kaal overlaps the fixed (sthir) Vrishabha lagna, so that Lakshmi "stays". Business / Chopda Pujan: the Kumbha lagna in the afternoon (1:26–2:54 PM) or the evening muhurat. Nishita / Kali Puja / tantric sadhana: 11:39 PM–12:31 AM. Choghadiya windows are meant for travel and are not recommended for Lakshmi Puja.

Diwali Lakshmi Puja vidhi (short)

  1. Clean the home, make rangoli, put Lakshmi charan facing inward and torans on the door.
  2. Lay a red cloth on a chowki; place Ganesh on the left and Lakshmi on the right, with a kalash, coconut and mango leaves.
  3. Sankalp, Ganesh puja, then Lakshmi puja with roli, akshat, kamal gatta, flowers, haldi-ganth, kauri and gomti chakra.
  4. Offer kheel-batashe, panchmeva and sweets; light the main ghee diya, which burns through the night.
  5. Worship account books and pens; do Lakshmi aarti, then light diyas around the home.
