Why the confusion: is there a gap day after Diwali?

Govardhan Puja is usually "the day after Diwali", but in 2026 there is a one-day gap. Diwali is on 8 November and Govardhan Puja on 10 November.

The reason is that Amavasya lasts until 12:31 PM on 9 November, so the morning of the 9th is still Amavasya ("Diwali Snan"). Kartik Shukla Pratipada begins at 12:31 PM on 9 November and is the sunrise tithi on 10 November, when the prescribed morning (pratahkala) puja is possible. Drik Panchang notes this gap happens "sometimes".

Some holiday lists show 9 November because they simply count "day after Diwali". Gujarati New Year (Bestu Varas) and Maharashtra’s Bali Padva follow the same Pratipada, so check your regional calendar.

Recommended date and muhurat

Tuesday 10 November, 6:40–8:50 AM (Delhi) for Govardhan parikrama/puja. Cook and offer Annakut (56 bhog or a simple mixed-vegetable and rice offering) through the morning and early afternoon. Pratipada ends at 2:00 PM.

Govardhan Puja vidhi (short)

1. Make a small Govardhan hill and Krishna figure from cow dung or clay in the courtyard.
2. Offer roli, akshat, flowers, ghee diya, kheel-batashe and the cooked Annakut.
3. Do seven parikramas while chanting "Govardhan Dharan Ki Jai".
4. Worship cows; share the Annakut prasad.
