Long before Kashi became the city of Shiva, it was a city of the Sun. And on one morning each year — the sixth day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada — thousands of couples still descend the worn stone steps of an ancient stepwell near Assi Ghat, bathe together at sunrise, and walk away having given up something they will never eat again.

This is Lolark Shashthi, also called Lolark Chhath — one of the oldest, rawest, most quietly moving observances in all of Sanatan Dharma. In 2026 it falls on Thursday, 17 September.

Lolark Shashthi 2026: Date & Tithi Timings

Lolark Shashthi is observed on Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha Shashthi — the sixth day of the waxing moon in the month of Bhadrapada. Because the defining ritual is a sunrise bath, the day on which Shashthi is present at sunrise is the day the vrat is kept.

Why Kashi Has Twelve Suns — The Story of Lolarka

The Kashi Khanda of the Skanda Purana tells a story that most devotees have never heard. When Surya Dev first beheld Kashi, he was so captivated that he could not bear to leave. Rather than abandon the city — or abandon his duty of crossing the sky — the Sun divided himself into twelve forms and settled permanently in Kashi as the twelve Adityas: Lolarka, Uttararka, Sambaditya, Drupadaditya, Mayukhaditya, Khakholka, Arunaditya, Vriddhaditya, Keshavaditya, Vimaladitya, Gangaditya and Yamaditya.

The first and foremost of these is Lolarka. The name carries its own explanation: lola means restless, trembling, eager. Because the mind of the Sun became lola — restlessly eager — to gaze upon Kashi, the Sun in Kashi took the name Lolarka. The Purana places him in the southern reaches of the city, at the sangam where the Asi stream meets the Ganga.

That is exactly where Lolark Kund stands today.

The Pond of the Trembling Sun

Lolark Kund is among the very oldest sacred sites in Varanasi — scholars place worship here well before 1000 CE, possibly predating the era when Shiva and Vishnu became the presiding deities of Kashi. Some believe it began as a site of Surya and Naga worship, making it a living remnant of India's most ancient solar tradition.

The kund itself is a rectangular stepwell roughly 23 by 15 metres, sunk deep into the earth with steep flights of stone steps descending on three sides. The fourth side — the east — is a high arched retaining wall, deliberately aligned so that the rising sun strikes the water. When the first light lands, the reflection quivers and dances across the surface. The trembling sun. Lolarka. The name is not poetry; it is a description of what you actually see.

The Vow That Makes Lolark Shashthi Unlike Any Other Vrat

Most vrats ask you to fast for a day. Lolark Shashthi asks for something far heavier — and far more beautiful.

Couples who long for a child come to the kund before dawn and bathe together in its waters. Then they do two things:

• They leave behind the clothes they bathed in. The old garment is surrendered at the kund and never taken home — a literal shedding of the past self, of grief, of the identity of being childless.
• They renounce one fruit or vegetable — for life. Each couple chooses an item and vows never to eat it again. It is offered to Surya as the price of the prayer.

Think about what that second vow means. Every single time for the rest of their lives that this vegetable appears on a thali at a wedding, in a neighbour's kitchen, in their own child's lunchbox — they will remember the morning they stood in that water and asked. The vrat does not end at sunset. It becomes a lifelong act of remembrance.

Tradition also holds that a dip at Lolark Kund brings relief from chronic skin ailments, and the fair draws devotees seeking healing as much as those seeking santan.

How to Observe Lolark Shashthi at Home

You do not need to be in Varanasi. Surya Dev rises over every rooftop. Here is how to keep the vrat wherever you are:

1. Rise before sunrise, ideally during Brahma Muhurat. Bathe — and if you have Gangajal, add a few drops to your bathing water to invoke the sanctity of the Kashi ghats.
2. Wear clean, unstitched or fresh clothes. Red, orange or saffron are Surya's colours.
3. Offer Arghya at sunrise. Stand facing east. Fill a copper vessel with water, add roli, red chandan, akshat and a red flower. Raise it to forehead height and pour it slowly in a thin stream so the sunlight passes through the falling water. This is the heart of the entire vrat.
4. Chant the Surya mantra as you pour — "Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah" — or simply "Om Suryaya Namah", eleven or one hundred and eight times.
5. Light a ghee diya and offer red flowers, jaggery and wheat to Surya Dev.
6. Take the sankalp. If you are observing for santan prapti, this is when you make your vow — name the fruit or vegetable you are renouncing, and speak it aloud.
7. Offer to Shashthi Devi. The sixth tithi belongs to Shashthi Devi, protector of children. Offer haldi, akshat and a red thread in her name.
8. Feed someone. Anna-daan on Shashthi — especially to children — is considered to multiply the merit of the vrat many times over.

A Rare Convergence in 2026: Kanya Sankranti Falls the Same Day

There is something quietly extraordinary about 17 September 2026. On this very day, Surya Dev completes his transit out of Simha and enters Kanya rashi — Kanya Sankranti. The Sun changes his house on the morning of his own Kashi festival.

Sankranti days are already considered highly auspicious for snan, daan and Surya aradhana. When a Sankranti and Lolark Shashthi fall together, the merit of arghya, charity and vrat on that morning is held to be greatly magnified.
