Mangalwar Vrat Vidhi: Complete Tuesday Fast and Hanuman Puja Guide

Mangalwar Vrat Vidhi: Complete Tuesday Fast and Hanuman Puja Guide

Mangalwar Vrat — the Tuesday fast in honour of Lord Hanuman — is one of the most widely observed weekly vratas among Hindus across India. Rooted in deep devotion to the mighty son of Anjana, this vrat is believed to dissolve obstacles, dispel fear, increase physical and mental strength, and protect the devotee and their family from negative energies. Whether you're observing it for the first time or seeking a more thorough understanding of the vidhi, this complete guide has everything you need.

What is Mangalwar Vrat?

Mangalwar (Tuesday) is the sacred day of Lord Hanuman, also worshipped on Saturdays. The Mangalwar Vrat is a weekly fast and puja dedicated to Lord Hanuman — the epitome of devotion (bhakti), strength (shakti), wisdom (buddhi), and celibacy (brahmacharya). Observing this vrat is said to remove Mangal Dosha (Mars affliction) from the birth chart, overcome enemies and obstacles, ensure success in competitive examinations, protect from black magic and the evil eye, and bring courage to face life's challenges. The vrat is particularly recommended for those with a strong or afflicted Mars in their Kundali, for athletes and professionals in competitive fields, and for anyone seeking Hanuman ji's protection for their family.

Mangalwar Vrat Muhurat — Best Time to Begin

The Mangalwar Vrat can be started on any Tuesday, but the most auspicious time to begin is:

  • Hanuman Jayanti (Chaitra Purnima) — most powerful initiation day
  • During Navratri's Tuesday (Mangalwar)
  • The first Tuesday of Shravan or Kartik month
  • Any Tuesday during a waxing moon (Shukla Paksha)

Traditional practice recommends observing the vrat for either 21 consecutive Tuesdays or for an indefinitely continuing weekly practice. Our Kundali Analysis (₹499) can confirm whether Mangal Dosha is present in your chart and recommend whether the vrat should be observed for a specific number of weeks or as an ongoing practice.

Step-by-Step Mangalwar Vrat Vidhi

Step 1: Morning Rules — Sunrise Preparation

Wake before sunrise on Tuesday. Bathe thoroughly — cold water is considered more sattvic for Mangalwar Vrat. Wear clean clothes in red or saffron (Hanuman ji's colours). Apply Roli (₹45) as tilak on your forehead. Tie a Mauli thread (₹29) on your right wrist as a mark of Hanuman's protection for the day. Do not eat anything before completing the Hanuman puja.

Step 2: Altar Preparation

Set up a clean puja space with a Hanuman image or idol. Sprinkle Gangajal (₹59) on the altar and idol. Light a diya fuelled with Pure Desi Ghee (₹179). Keep red flowers (hibiscus or marigold), Roli (₹45), Akshat (₹49), and boondi or besan ladoo (prasad) ready on the Aarti Thali (₹299).

Step 3: Hanuman Puja Steps

Begin with Ganesh Vandana. Then invoke Hanuman ji: "Om Sri Hanumate Namah." Offer Gangajal for Padya (feet washing). Apply sindoor mixed with Desi Ghee to the idol (this is Hanuman ji's most beloved offering — sindoor and ghee). Offer red flowers, Akshat (₹49), and whole red chillies or besan ladoo. Light incense and Bhimseni Kapoor (₹149).

Step 4: Hanuman Chalisa — 108 Names & Stotra

Recite the Hanuman Chalisa (the forty verses composed by Goswami Tulsidas) at least once — ideally three or seven times on the vrat day. For those observing the vrat for a specific purpose (like overcoming enemies or removing Mangal Dosha), reciting the Chalisa 11 times on each Tuesday is especially recommended. Follow this with the recitation of Hanuman Ashtak or Bajrang Baan if you are comfortable with them.

Step 5: Vrat Katha

Read or listen to the Mangalwar Vrat Katha — the narrative story of a devotee who observed the Tuesday fast with complete faith and was delivered from all misfortunes by Lord Hanuman's grace. The katha is available in our Mangalwar Vrat Workshop (₹299).

Step 6: Aarti

Perform Hanuman aarti ("Aarti Kije Hanuman Lala Ki") using the Aarti Thali (₹299) with lit Bhimseni Kapoor (₹149). Rotate the thali clockwise five times in front of Hanuman ji's image or idol.

Step 7: Prasad — Boondi or Besan Ladoo

The traditional prasad for Mangalwar Vrat is boondi (small gram flour pearls in sugar syrup) or besan ladoo. Offer the prasad to Hanuman ji first, then distribute to family members. Some devotees also offer bananas or jaggery (Gud, ₹49) as Hanuman ji is known to appreciate simple, sweet offerings.

Step 8: Evening Prayer

In the evening, light a diya again at the Hanuman altar. Recite the Hanuman Chalisa once more. If you observed a full day's fast, break it after this evening prayer with the vrat prasad. Offer sincere gratitude (dhanyavad) to Hanuman ji for his protection throughout the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can women observe the Mangalwar Vrat?

Yes, women can and do observe the Mangalwar Vrat. There is no scriptural prohibition. While there is a popular folk belief in some regions that women should not touch the Hanuman idol directly (particularly a smeared sindoor idol at certain temples), women can fully perform all aspects of the home puja — the Hanuman Chalisa, aarti, and fasting — without restriction. The important thing is sincere devotion. Our Workshop (₹299) addresses this question in depth.

What should I eat during the Mangalwar Vrat fast?

During the fast, most devotees eat once in the day or break the fast only in the evening after puja. Permissible foods include fruits, milk, curd, sabudana preparations, and sendha namak. Avoid grains, regular salt, non-vegetarian food, onion, and garlic on the vrat day. Boondi or besan ladoo (prasad) is consumed after the puja as the first food of the day.

How many Tuesdays should I observe the Mangalwar Vrat?

The most common commitment is 21 consecutive Tuesdays. However, many devotees observe the Mangalwar Vrat every week indefinitely as part of their spiritual practice — just as they might perform any weekly puja. For those observing it for a specific purpose (like removing Mangal Dosha or overcoming an obstacle), completing a defined number (21 or 51 Tuesdays) followed by a Udyapan is the correct approach.

What is the most powerful Hanuman mantra for the Mangalwar Vrat?

For general protection and blessings: "Om Sri Hanumate Namah" (chant 108 times). For removing obstacles and enemies: "Om Hanumate Rudraya Namah". For Mangal Dosha removal: chant the Hanuman Chalisa 11 times on each Tuesday. For those in competitive situations: "Om Aim Hreem Hanumate Ramadutaya Namah". The Bajrang Baan is also recited for immediate, powerful protection in critical situations.

What colour should I wear on Mangalwar Vrat?

Red and saffron (orange) are Hanuman ji's colours and the ideal colours to wear on Tuesdays. Wearing these colours on the vrat day deepens your energetic connection to Lord Hanuman and is considered auspicious. Avoid black and white on the vrat day.

Can the Mangalwar Vrat be observed to remove Mangal Dosha?

Yes. The Mangalwar Vrat is one of the most effective remedies for Mangal Dosha (Kuja Dosha) in Vedic astrology. Mars (Mangal) is the ruling planet of Tuesday, and worshipping Hanuman ji — who is considered a deity of Mars — on Tuesdays directly pacifies an afflicted Mars. For a full assessment of whether you have Mangal Dosha and its specific impact on your chart, our Kundali Analysis (₹499) provides detailed guidance.

Invoke Hanuman Ji's Strength Every Tuesday
