Navratri Puja Vidhi: Complete Guide for 9 Days of Devi Worship

Navratri Puja Vidhi: Complete Guide for 9 Days of Devi Worship

Navratri — the nine sacred nights of Goddess Durga — is one of the most powerful spiritual seasons in the Hindu calendar. For nine consecutive days, we worship all nine forms of Shakti, observe fasts, light the Akhand Diya, and invite the divine feminine into our homes through Kalash Sthapana. Whether you're observing Navratri for the first time or deepening your family's practice, this guide covers everything from Day 1 Kalash Sthapana to the closing Kanya Puja on Ashtami and Navami.

What is Navratri Puja?

Navratri (meaning "nine nights") is observed four times a year, but the two most significant are Chaitra Navratri (spring, March–April) and Sharad Navratri (autumn, September–October). The festival honours the nine manifestations of Goddess Durga, known as the Navadurga: Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kaalratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri. Each form represents a different aspect of divine feminine power — creation, protection, wisdom, and liberation. The Kalash Sthapana (installation of the divine vessel) on the first day is the most important ritual, as it establishes Goddess Durga's presence in your home for all nine days. The Akhand Diya — a continuously burning lamp — must remain lit from the first to last day of Navratri as a symbol of uninterrupted devotion.

Navratri Kalash Sthapana Muhurat

Kalash Sthapana must be performed during the Pratipratham tithi of Shukla Paksha on the first day of Navratri. The most auspicious window is during the Abhijit Muhurat (approximately 11:45 AM to 12:30 PM) or the first hour of sunrise (Brahma Muhurat). Avoid Chaturdashi tithi, Rahu Kaal, and Vrishchika Lagna for Kalash Sthapana. Our Kundali Analysis (₹499) can provide your personalised Navratri muhurat based on your city and birth details.

Step-by-Step Navratri Puja Vidhi

Day 1: Kalash Sthapana (Ghatasthapana)

This is the most important ritual of Navratri. Choose a clean, elevated spot facing east or north-east. Lay a Lal Kapda (₹99) on the altar. Pour clean soil (mitti) into a shallow pot and sow 7 Sacred Grains (₹89) in the soil — these represent abundance and will sprout over the 9 days as a sign of divine blessing. Place the Copper Kalash (₹599) on top, filled with water and Gangajal (₹59). Place five mango leaves in the mouth and a coconut wrapped in red cloth on top. Tie a Mauli thread (₹29) around the Kalash while chanting the Kalash Sthapana mantra. Light the Akhand Diya (₹99) — this must not extinguish for all nine days.

Day 1 Deity: Shailputri

First form of Durga, daughter of the Himalayas. Offer white flowers, cow's ghee, and Akshat (₹49). Chant: "Om Devi Shailputryai Namah."

Day 2 Deity: Brahmacharini

The ascetic form of the Goddess. Offer sugar and panchamrit. Chant: "Om Devi Brahmacharinyai Namah." Apply Chandan (₹39) to the idol.

Day 3 Deity: Chandraghanta

Goddess of courage and grace, with a crescent moon on her forehead. Offer milk sweets. Apply Roli (₹45) and offer red flowers. Chant: "Om Devi Chandraghantayai Namah."

Day 4 Deity: Kushmanda

Creator of the universe, associated with the sun. Offer malpua (sweet pancakes) and Desi Ghee (₹179) diyas. Chant: "Om Devi Kushmandayai Namah."

Day 5 Deity: Skandamata

Mother of Skanda (Kartikeya). Offer bananas and white lotus flowers. Chant: "Om Devi Skandamatayai Namah."

Day 6 Deity: Katyayani

Warrior Goddess, slayer of Mahishasura. Offer honey. Apply Orange Sindoor (₹45) — especially significant for unmarried women seeking good husbands. Chant: "Om Devi Katyayanyai Namah."

Day 7 Deity: Kaalratri

The most fierce form of the Goddess, destroyer of darkness and ignorance. Offer jaggery (Gud, ₹49) and sesame sweets. Chant: "Om Devi Kaalratryai Namah."

Day 8 Deity: Mahagauri (Ashtami) — Kanya Puja

The pure white Goddess of peace and perfection. On Ashtami, perform the sacred Kanya Puja — invite 9 young girls (representing the Navadurga) to your home. Wash their feet, apply Roli (₹45) on their feet, offer food (halwa, puri, chana), gift them a red chunri, and touch their feet as an act of worship.

Day 9 Deity: Siddhidatri (Navami) & Kalash Visarjan

The bestower of siddhis (divine abilities). Perform Havana if possible, then conclude the Navratri with Kalash Visarjan — pour the Kalash water at the base of a Tulsi plant or a tree. The sprouted grains are also offered to water or a garden. Perform final aarti with Bhimseni Kapoor (₹149) and the Aarti Thali (₹299).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we do Navratri Puja without fasting?

Yes. While fasting (vrat) during Navratri is deeply meritorious, it is a personal commitment and not mandatory to perform the puja. Many families perform the daily puja, Kalash Sthapana, and aarti without observing a full fast — especially the elderly, children, pregnant women, and those with health conditions. What matters most is sincere devotion and regular worship of the Goddess throughout the nine days.

What are the 9 forms of Durga worshipped during Navratri?

The Navadurga are: 1) Shailputri (daughter of mountains), 2) Brahmacharini (ascetic form), 3) Chandraghanta (crescent-crowned Goddess), 4) Kushmanda (cosmic creator), 5) Skandamata (mother of Skanda), 6) Katyayani (warrior Goddess), 7) Kaalratri (destroyer of darkness), 8) Mahagauri (pure white form), and 9) Siddhidatri (bestower of divine powers). Each is associated with specific offerings, colours, and mantras.

What to offer each day during Navratri?

Each day has a traditional offering: Day 1 — Ghee; Day 2 — Sugar; Day 3 — Milk; Day 4 — Malpua; Day 5 — Banana; Day 6 — Honey; Day 7 — Jaggery (Gud, ₹49); Day 8 — Coconut; Day 9 — Sesame seeds. Fresh flowers in the Goddess's preferred colour for each day are also offered.

What colours should we wear each day of Navratri?

Traditional colours: Day 1 — Grey, Day 2 — Orange, Day 3 — White, Day 4 — Red, Day 5 — Royal Blue, Day 6 — Yellow, Day 7 — Green, Day 8 — Peacock Green, Day 9 — Purple. Wearing the day's colour while performing puja deepens the energetic connection to that day's Durga form.

What is the importance of the Kanya Puja on Ashtami?

Kanya Puja (also called Kumari Puja) is the ritual worship of 9 young girls between ages 2 and 10 as living embodiments of the Navadurga. The girls are welcomed with feet-washing, Roli tilak, and a feast of halwa-puri-chana. They receive gifts (preferably a chunri and some money). Touching their feet and seeking their blessings is considered equivalent to worshipping the Goddess herself. This ritual is performed on Ashtami or Navami, or both.

What happens if the Akhand Diya goes out during Navratri?

If the Akhand Diya (₹99) goes out accidentally, relight it immediately with a pure flame (not a match — use another diya or a lighter used only for puja). Offer a sincere apology to the Goddess, do a brief prayer, and continue. The Goddess is benevolent and understands human imperfection — do not let a single slip derail your nine-day devotion.

Honour the Goddess for Nine Sacred Nights

Navratri is the most powerful time of year to connect with Shakti — the divine feminine energy that sustains all creation. Set up your Kalash, light your Akhand Diya, and begin your nine-day journey with devotion and joy.

Jai Mata Di! May the nine forms of the Divine Mother bless you and your family with strength, wisdom, and grace.
