Sawan ka Aakhri Somvar 2026: 24 August Date, Puja Vidhi & Udyapan Guide

The last Monday of Sawan is not just one more vrat day. It is the day the whole month gathers itself into a single offering. Whatever you have carried through Shravan — the early baths, the cold jalabhishek water on your palms, the hunger you held quietly through the afternoon, the prayer you never said out loud — all of it comes to rest at Mahadev's feet on this Monday.

Sawan ka aakhri Somvar in 2026 falls on Monday, 24 August. It is the fourth and final Shravan Somvar of the year, and it lands on Shukla Paksha Dwadashi — a rare and beautiful pairing. Four days later, on 28 August, Shravan Purnima closes the month altogether.

⏰ Sawan ka Aakhri Somvar 2026 — Monday, 24 August. This is the last Shravan Somvar vrat of the year. Sawan itself ends on 28 August (Shravan Purnima). If you have been fasting all month, this is your Udyapan day.

Date, Tithi & Muhurat for 24 August 2026

The panchang for the final Sawan Somvar is unusually generous. The day opens under Priti yoga, carries Dwadashi tithi right through, and gives you three clean Shubh windows for puja. Timings below are calculated for Ujjain (IST) — shift them by a few minutes for your own city.

Detail Timing / Value
Day Monday, 24 August 2026
Masa & Paksha Shravana, Shukla Paksha
Tithi Dwadashi — until 06:21 AM on 25 August
Nakshatra Purva Ashadha till 08:28 PM, then Uttara Ashadha
Yoga Priti till 07:03 AM, then Ayushman
Sunrise / Sunset 06:06 AM / 06:51 PM
Brahma Muhurta 04:36 AM – 05:21 AM (best for snan & sankalp)
Shubh Choghadiya (morning) 09:17 AM – 10:53 AM
Abhijit Muhurta 12:03 PM – 12:54 PM
Labh & Amrit (evening) 03:40 PM – 06:51 PM (ideal for evening aarti & parana prep)
Rahu Kaal — avoid 07:42 AM – 09:17 AM

A note on Rahu Kaal: Monday's Rahu Kaal falls early, between 7:42 and 9:17 AM — right in the window when most families sit for puja. Either finish your abhishek before 7:42 AM (Brahma Muhurta is ideal), or wait for the Shubh Choghadiya at 9:17 AM. Do not begin a sankalp inside Rahu Kaal.

Why the Last Sawan Somvar Carries Extra Weight

In Shaiva tradition, Shravan is the month Mahadev is closest to the earth. The Samudra Manthan story sits underneath all of it: when the halahal poison rose from the churning ocean and no deva could hold it, Shiva drank it and held it in his throat. His throat turned blue — Neelkanth. To cool him, the devas poured water, and the gesture became jalabhishek. Shravan is when that offering is said to reach him most directly.

Each Sawan Somvar builds on the last. The first Monday is sankalp — the promise. The middle Mondays are tapasya — the keeping. The last Monday is samarpan — the handing over. This is why elders say the aakhri Somvar should be observed with more care, not less, even though the body is tired by now. The vrat is not judged by how many Mondays you fasted; it is judged by how you finished.

Dwadashi Makes This Monday Rarer Still

24 August 2026 is also Shukla Dwadashi, observed in some traditions as Damodara Dwadashi. Dwadashi is a tithi of completion and release — the tithi on which Ekadashi fasts are broken. To have the final Shravan Somvar fall on a Dwadashi is considered especially favourable for concluding a vrat and for making a sankalp for something you have been waiting on: a marriage, a child, healing in the family, relief from a long-standing worry.

Puja Vidhi for the Last Sawan Somvar

Keep it simple and complete rather than elaborate and rushed. The order below is the traditional home vidhi.

  1. Snan and sankalp (Brahma Muhurta, 04:36–05:21 AM). Bathe before sunrise, wear clean white or light clothes, and sit facing east or north. Take water and akshat in your right palm and state your sankalp aloud: your name, gotra, and that this is your fourth and final Shravan Somvar vrat.
  2. Clean and set the puja sthaan. Place the Shivling or Shiva-Parvati image on a wooden chowki over a clean cloth. Light a ghee diya to the right of the deity.
  3. Jalabhishek. Pour Gangajal over the Shivling in a slow, unbroken stream from a copper kalash while chanting Om Namah Shivaya. Follow with milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar if you are doing panchamrit abhishek, then close with plain water again.
  4. Offer the sacred five. Belpatra (smooth side down, in threes), dhatura, white flowers, bhang leaves if available, and akshat. Apply chandan tripund on the Shivling and vibhuti on your own forehead.
  5. Vastra and shringar. Offer a white or red cloth, mauli around the base of the Shivling, and itra. On the final Monday, many families also offer a full shringar to Maa Parvati — bindi, bangles, sindoor — since Shiva-Parvati are worshipped together in Shravan.
  6. Naivedya. Offer panchmeva, seasonal fruit, and kheer or a simple ghee sweet. Never offer tulsi, ketaki flowers, haldi, coconut water or sindoor on a Shivling.
  7. Katha and jaap. Read the Sawan Somvar Vrat Katha aloud so the whole family hears it. Then complete at least one mala of Om Namah Shivaya or eleven rounds of the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra on a rudraksha mala.
  8. Aarti and pradakshina. Perform Shiv aarti with a kapoor flame, blow the shankh, and do three half-circumambulations (never cross the jaladhari channel).
  9. Parana. Break the fast after the evening aarti and Shiva's naivedya has been offered — usually after sunset (06:51 PM) with prasad, fruit and light satvik food.

Sawan Somvar Vrat Udyapan: How to Close the Vrat Properly

This is the part most people are unsure about, and it matters. Udyapan is the formal conclusion of a vrat — the ritual in which you tell the deity, with gratitude, that the observance you began is now complete. A vrat left without udyapan is traditionally considered unfinished, and the merit is said to remain unsettled.

If you took a sankalp for all four Sawan Somvars of 2026, 24 August is your Udyapan day. (If you are observing the longer Solah Somvar vrat, your udyapan comes on the seventeenth Monday — that is a separate observance, and Sawan's last Monday is simply one Monday within it.)

Udyapan Vidhi — Step by Step

  1. Complete the regular Somvar puja described above, in full.
  2. Invoke Ganpati first with a short Ganesh vandana, then establish a copper kalash filled with water, mango leaves and a coconut on a bed of akshat.
  3. Place idols or images of Shiva and Parvati, and an image of Chandradev (Monday's ruling graha), on the chowki.
  4. Perform a Rudrabhishek or an extended panchamrit abhishek — more elaborate than a normal Monday.
  5. Offer 108 belpatra with Om Namah Shivaya, one leaf per chant, if you are able.
  6. Perform a small havan with desi ghee and samagri if your family tradition includes one. Otherwise, a kapoor aarti with full family participation is sufficient.
  7. Read the vrat katha a final time and speak your gratitude aloud — name what you asked for and thank Mahadev whether or not it has come yet.
  8. Brahman bhojan and daan. Feed at least one Brahman or, in the modern practice most families follow, feed the needy and donate white items — rice, milk, white cloth, sugar — along with dakshina.
  9. Distribute prasad to family and neighbours, then break your fast.

What Comes Right After

The final Somvar does not stand alone — it opens the last stretch of Shravan. Keep these three dates in view:

  • 25 August (Tuesday)Bhauma Pradosh Vrat, Shiva's Trayodashi fast falling on a Tuesday. Observing it the very day after your last Somvar is considered highly meritorious.
  • 28 August (Friday)Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan, the last day of Sawan. A lunar eclipse also falls on this date — check the sutak position before fixing your rakhi timing.
  • Beyond Sawan — devotees who wish to continue Monday worship year-round often begin the 16 Somvar Vrat from a Shravan Monday.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sawan ka aakhri Somvar on 24 August 2026?
Yes. In North India (Purnimanta calendar) Sawan 2026 runs from 30 July to 28 August, giving four Sawan Somvars — 3, 10, 17 and 24 August. Monday 24 August is the fourth and final one. In Amanta states (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra, Gujarat) Shravan runs 13 August to 11 September, so the Monday count differs there.

Is Udyapan compulsory after Sawan Somvar vrat?
If you took a formal sankalp for a fixed number of Mondays, yes — udyapan is how the vrat is completed and the sankalp released. If you fasted informally without a sankalp, a full udyapan is not required, but a final Monday puja with daan and prasad distribution is still the right way to close the month.

What if I missed one or two Sawan Mondays this year?
Do not abandon the vrat over it. Complete the final Monday with full devotion, mention the missed Mondays honestly in your sankalp, and offer additional daan in their place. Continuity of intention matters more than an unbroken count.

Can the aakhri Somvar puja be done at home instead of a temple?
Absolutely. A Shivling at home, Gangajal, belpatra and a ghee diya are enough. Home jalabhishek is described in the shastras as fully valid. If a temple visit is possible, go — but a sincere home puja is never a lesser offering.

What time should I break the fast on 24 August?
After the evening aarti, once naivedya has been offered to Shiva — traditionally after sunset at 06:51 PM. Break it with prasad first, then fruit or a light satvik meal. If you are unwell, break it earlier without guilt.

Can women observe the last Sawan Somvar vrat?
Yes. The Somvar vrat is observed widely by unmarried women praying for a good husband, by married women for their husband's long life, and by men and women alike for health, peace and the removal of obstacles. There is no restriction.

Closing the Month at Mahadev's Feet

On Monday morning, when the water leaves the kalash and runs over the Shivling for the last time this Sawan, do not rush it. Let the stream be slow. Say what you came to say. Whatever the month asked of you — the early mornings, the empty stomach, the patience — it was never really about the fast. It was about showing up, four Mondays in a row, for someone who never asks for anything except that you come as you are.

Om Namah Shivaya. 🙏
