Guru Pradosh Vrat 2026: 24 September Date, Pradosh Kaal Muhurat, Vrat Katha & Vidhi

There is a particular kind of evening in the Hindu calendar that most people walk straight past. Not a festival. No visarjan procession, no rangoli, no relatives arriving. Just the hour and a half around sunset on the thirteenth tithi, when — according to the Skanda Purana — Shiva dances on the silver floor of Kailash between Nandi's horns, and Parvati watches, and whatever is asked in that window is heard.

That evening is Pradosh. And on Thursday, 24 September 2026, it falls on Guruvar — Brihaspati's day — which makes it Guru Pradosh Vrat, considered the most fruitful Pradosh of all for wisdom, education, progeny and the blessings of one's ancestors.

The timing this year is unusually meaningful. It sits two days before Pitru Paksha begins, in the same week as Vamana Jayanti and Anant Chaturdashi. It is, for most households, the last quiet Shiva vrat before the ancestral fortnight and then Navratri swallow the calendar whole.

⏰ Guru Pradosh Vrat is on Thursday, 24 September 2026. Trayodashi tithi runs from 10:50 PM on 23 September to 11:18 PM on 24 September (IST). The puja is done in Pradosh Kaal — the twilight window that opens at your local sunset on the 24th.

What exactly is Pradosh Kaal?

Pradosh Kaal is not a fixed clock time. It is the twilight — the sandhi, the joint between day and night — and it opens at your local sunset. Most panchangs give the puja window as roughly two hours and twenty-four minutes from sunset; the stricter definition takes about forty-five minutes on either side of the sunset moment itself. Either way, the first half hour after sunset is the heart of it.

Because it is tied to sunset, it shifts by city. Approximate sunset times for 24 September 2026:

City Approx. sunset (IST) Pradosh Kaal (approx.)
Delhi 6:13 PM 6:13 – 8:37 PM
Mumbai 6:37 PM 6:37 – 9:01 PM
Kolkata 5:29 PM 5:29 – 7:53 PM
Bengaluru 6:18 PM 6:18 – 8:42 PM
Chennai 6:03 PM 6:03 – 8:27 PM
Ahmedabad 6:33 PM 6:33 – 8:57 PM

These are close approximations for planning. Confirm the exact minute against your city's panchang on the day.

Why Guru Pradosh Is Different

Every Pradosh is Shiva's. But the weekday it lands on adds a second layer, and the phalam — the fruit of the vrat — changes accordingly. This is the whole logic of the Pradosh cycle:

Day Name Traditionally kept for
Sunday Bhanu / Ravi Pradosh Health, long life
Monday Soma Pradosh Peace of mind, fulfilment of wishes
Tuesday Bhauma Pradosh Freedom from debt, relief from illness
Wednesday Saumya / Budh Pradosh Learning, intellect, success in study
Thursday Guru Pradosh Wisdom, progeny, pitru kripa, removal of enemies
Friday Bhrigu / Shukra Pradosh Marital harmony, prosperity
Saturday Shani Pradosh Relief from Shani dosha, birth of a son

Guru Pradosh carries Brihaspati — teacher of the devas, karaka of knowledge, children, dharma and wealth. If Jupiter sits weak, debilitated or afflicted in a horoscope, this is the vrat traditionally prescribed. And its association with pitru kripa — the grace of the ancestors — is why keeping it on 24 September, forty-eight hours before Pitru Paksha opens, is considered such a well-placed beginning.

The Story Behind Pradosh

The Puranas trace Pradosh to the churning of the ocean. When the devas and asuras pulled Vasuki back and forth around Mount Mandara, the first thing to surface was not amrit but halahal — a poison so virulent that creation itself began to wither. Nobody would take it. Vishnu would not, Brahma could not.

Shiva drank it. Parvati, in the same instant, pressed her hand to his throat so the poison could go no further, and it stayed there, turning it blue. He became Neelkanth.

The moment he survived was Trayodashi twilight. The devas returned on the following Trayodashi to praise him, and found him dancing between Nandi's horns in the courtyard of Kailash, Parvati beside him on the silver seat. That is the image Pradosh Kaal holds: not Shiva the destroyer, not Shiva the ascetic, but Shiva pleased, dancing, at his most accessible — which is precisely why the tradition says petitions made in this window carry further than petitions made at any other hour.

Guru Pradosh Vrat Puja Vidhi

  1. Morning snan and sankalp. Bathe at sunrise, wear clean clothes — yellow is auspicious for Guruvar. Before your Shiva image or Shivling, state your name, gotra, place, and the intention behind the vrat.
  2. Keep the day light. Water and fruit through the day. The fast is preparation for the evening, not an endurance test.
  3. Bathe again before sunset. This second snan, roughly an hour before Pradosh Kaal opens, is part of the vidhi and not optional in the traditional method.
  4. Set the place. Clean the puja space, spread a fresh cloth, and draw a small mandala. Face north-east. Light a desi ghee deepak as the sun touches the horizon.
  5. Abhishek. Bathe the Shivling with Gangajal, then milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar if you are doing panchamrit, then Gangajal again to close.
  6. Offer the shringar. Chandan, akshat, bilva patra, dhatura, white or yellow flowers, bhasma. On Guru Pradosh, yellow flowers and a chana-dal or besan offering are added for Brihaspati.
  7. Japa and path. Chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times, or the Mahamrityunjaya mantra if you have been initiated into it. Read the Pradosh vrat katha, then the Shiv Chalisa.
  8. Aarti. Light kapoor on the aarti thali and perform aarti to Shiva, Parvati and Nandi together. Pradosh is a family puja — all three are worshipped.
  9. Parana. Break the fast the same night, after the puja is complete, with prasad.

While offering bilva patra, the traditional shloka is:

Tridalam trigunakaram trinetram cha triayudham,
Trijanma papa samharam eka bilvam shivarpanam.

Fasting Rules

Pradosh is a one-meal vrat, and the discipline is gentler than most people assume.

Allowed Avoid
Water, milk, fruit, fruit juice Grains, rice, wheat, pulses until parana
Sabudana, kuttu, singhare ka atta Onion, garlic, common salt
Sendha namak, dry fruits, potato Non-vegetarian food, alcohol, tamasic food
Yellow foods and chana dal (Guruvar) Anger, harsh speech, daytime sleep

Never offer to Shiva: tulsi leaves, ketaki (kewda) flowers, haldi, or coconut water for abhishek. Each prohibition has its own story in the Puranas, and every one of them is taken seriously.

The nirjala form is optional. If you are pregnant, elderly, diabetic or unwell, keep the phalahar version and take your medicines on time. Shiva is called Bholenath — the guileless one — because he weighs the sincerity, not the severity.

Pradosh falls on Trayodashi; Masik Shivratri falls on the Chaturdashi that follows it. This video walks through the Shivratri side of that pair — the rules, tithi and upay are largely shared.

The Next Pradosh After This One

The following Pradosh, on Thursday, 8 October 2026, is also a Guru Pradosh — and it is a rare one. Chaturdashi begins at 10:17 PM that night, which means Pradosh Kaal and Masik Shivratri land on the same evening. Devotees who have been meaning to take an eleven-Pradosh or twenty-six-Pradosh sankalp often use a pair like this as their starting point, because the momentum is already there.

⏰ Pitru Paksha 2026 begins on 26 September — two days after this Guru Pradosh. Many families keep the Guru Pradosh vrat specifically as the doorway into the shraddha fortnight, since Brihaspati and pitru kripa are linked.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Guru Pradosh Vrat in September 2026?
Thursday, 24 September 2026. Trayodashi tithi runs from 10:50 PM on 23 September to 11:18 PM on 24 September (IST), and the puja is done in Pradosh Kaal on the evening of the 24th.

What time is the Pradosh Kaal puja?
It begins at your local sunset and runs roughly two hours twenty-four minutes. In Delhi that is approximately 6:13 PM to 8:37 PM; in Mumbai approximately 6:37 PM to 9:01 PM. Confirm against your city's panchang.

Is Pradosh Vrat the same as Masik Shivratri?
No. Pradosh is on Trayodashi and is worshipped at twilight. Masik Shivratri is on Chaturdashi, the very next tithi, and is worshipped at midnight in Nishita Kaal. They fall on consecutive days, which is exactly why they get confused.

Do I have to fast without water?
No. Nirjala is one option, not the requirement. Most householders keep a phalahar fast — fruit, milk and water through the day — and break it after the evening puja.

How many Pradosh vrats should I keep?
Traditionally eleven or twenty-six consecutive Pradosh, closed with a formal udyapan. Some families keep a full year. Take the sankalp for a number you can honestly complete.

Can women keep Guru Pradosh Vrat?
Yes, and widely do — it is kept for the wellbeing of children, for progeny, and for a husband's long life. It is not restricted by gender; men keep it for wisdom, education and relief from Jupiter-related afflictions.

What is the connection with Pitru Paksha?
Guru Pradosh is associated with pitru kripa — ancestral grace — because Brihaspati governs dharma and lineage. Keeping it on 24 September, immediately before Pitru Paksha begins on 26 September, is considered an auspicious preparation for the tarpan fortnight.

One Lamp, at the Right Hour

Pradosh asks for very little. No pandal, no crowd, no expense. One clean space, one ghee lamp lit as the light goes, a few bilva leaves, and the willingness to be present for the ninety minutes when the tradition says he is dancing.

On 24 September the sun will set, the Trayodashi will still have five hours left in it, and the window will open whether or not anyone is standing there. It costs almost nothing to be standing there.
