Vamana Jayanti 2026 falls on Wednesday, 23 September — the Dwadashi of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha, the day Shri Hari took His fifth incarnation and His first fully human form. It is also called Vamana Dwadashi, and this year it arrives with a beautiful piece of timing: it is the very day devotees break their Parivartini Ekadashi fast. The Lord who turns over in His cosmic sleep on Ekadashi rises the next morning as a small boy who will measure the universe in two steps.

Vamana Jayanti 2026: Date, Tithi & Muhurat

The scriptures are unusually specific about the moment of this avatar. Bhagwan Vamana appeared in Abhijit Muhurat under Shravana Nakshatra, on Bhadrapada Shukla Dwadashi. That combination is why the day is observed with midday worship rather than the evening or midnight puja common to other jayantis.

The Story: Three Steps and a King Who Kept His Word

Mahabali — Bali — was the grandson of Prahlad, the same Prahlad whom Bhagwan Narasimha had once come to protect. He was an asura by birth but a devotee by nature: truthful, generous, unshakeably devoted to his word. Through austerity and the Vishwajit yajna he conquered the three worlds. Indra and the devas were driven out of Swarga.

Bali was not a tyrant. That is the whole difficulty of the story. He was a good king. But he had begun to believe he was the source of his own greatness — and the devas had nowhere left to stand.

Mata Aditi, mother of the devas, undertook the Payovrata fast. Shri Hari appeared to her and promised to be born as her son. And so Vamana was born to Aditi and Rishi Kashyap: a brahmachari boy, small in stature, radiant, carrying a danda, a chhatra and a kamandalu.

He walked into Bali's yajna and asked for the smallest gift imaginable — three steps of land, measured by His own small feet.

Shukracharya, Bali's guru, saw immediately who this child was and warned the king to refuse. Bali refused the warning instead. A king who has promised, he said, does not withdraw the promise because the cost has become clear. He poured the water of the vow.

Then the small boy grew. The first step covered the earth and everything on it. The second step covered the heavens. And then Vamana stopped, and asked quietly where He should place the third.

Bali bowed his head and offered it.

That is the moment the whole avatar turns on. Vishnu did not come to punish Bali — He came to complete him. The third step pressed Bali down to Sutala, a realm richer than the heaven he had lost, and Shri Hari Himself stood as its gatekeeper. Bali was granted the boon of returning once a year to see his people, a return still celebrated in Kerala as Onam, and named among the Chiranjivi — the immortals who will endure to the end of this yuga.

What the three steps actually mean

Traditional commentators read the three steps as the three planes a seeker must surrender: the physical (what I own), the mental (what I have achieved), and the spiritual (the "I" itself). The first two the Lord takes on His own. The third He waits to be offered. Ego, the story says, is the one thing that cannot be confiscated — it can only be given.

Vamana Jayanti Puja Vidhi at Home

This is a gentle, midday observance. No elaborate havan is required.

1. Snan and sankalp. Bathe early, wear clean yellow or white clothes, and take a sankalp before the puja sthal to observe Vamana Dwadashi.
2. Sthapana. Place an idol or picture of Bhagwan Vamana — or of Shri Vishnu — on a yellow cloth. Traditionally a small clay or metal Vamana murti is used.
3. Kalash. Fill a copper kalash with water and a few drops of Gangajal, cover with mango leaves and a coconut, and place it beside the idol.
4. Panchamrit abhishek. Bathe the idol with milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar, then pure water.
5. Shodashopachara or Panchopachara puja. Offer chandan tilak, akshat, yellow flowers, tulsi patra, dhoop, deep and naivedya. Tulsi is essential — no Vishnu puja is complete without it.
6. Path. Chant Vishnu Sahasranama, or simply recite "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" 108 times on a tulsi mala. Many families read the Vamana Katha from the Bhagavata Purana.
7. Shankh dhwani and aarti. Blow the shankh, then perform aarti with a ghee lamp and camphor.

Vrat Rules: How the Fast Is Kept

The Vamana Dwadashi vrat is observed for one day and is considered a kamya vrat — undertaken for the forgiveness of past sins and the blessings of Shri Hari.

A note on daan. Because the avatar itself is a story about giving, charity on Vamana Jayanti carries special weight. The traditional daan is dahi, chawal and mishri — curd, rice and rock sugar — along with a meal offered to a brahmin or to anyone in need. Umbrellas (chhatra) and footwear are also given, in memory of the small brahmachari who walked in carrying his own umbrella.

If you fasted on Parivartini Ekadashi

Parivartini Ekadashi falls on 22 September 2026, and its parana is on the morning of 23 September — Vamana Jayanti itself. Break the Ekadashi fast within the prescribed parana window first, then observe Vamana puja at Abhijit Muhurat. Many families treat the two days as a single continuous Vishnu observance, and the ancient texts encourage exactly that.

Thrikkakara Vamanamoorthy Temple, Kerala — the only major temple in India where Vamana is the presiding deity, and the mythological seat of Mahabali's kingdom. It is the ritual centre of Onam.

Ulagalantha Perumal Temple, Kanchipuram — one of the 108 Divya Desams, where the Lord is worshipped as Trivikrama, the form He took while measuring the worlds.

Badrinath, Uttarakhand — Vamana is counted among the forms honoured here, and Vamana Dwadashi is observed with special abhishek.

What is the difference between Vamana Jayanti and Onam?
They are two ends of the same story. Vamana Jayanti marks the appearance of the Lord and is observed on Bhadrapada Shukla Dwadashi across North and West India. Onam, celebrated in Kerala on Thiruvonam nakshatra in Chingam, commemorates King Mahabali's annual return to visit his people — the boon Vamana granted him. One honours the giver, the other the one who gave everything.

Can I keep the vrat if I already fasted for Parivartini Ekadashi the day before?
Yes, and it is considered especially meritorious. Complete the Ekadashi parana in the morning window on 23 September, then perform the Vamana puja at Abhijit Muhurat. If two consecutive fasting days are difficult for health reasons, keep a phalahar fast on Dwadashi instead — intention matters more than severity.

What should be donated on Vamana Jayanti?
Curd, rice and mishri are the classical daan, given with a cooked meal to a brahmin or to anyone in need. Umbrellas, footwear, white cloth and yellow items are also traditional. Give without announcing it — the story rewards quiet generosity.

Why is the puja done at midday and not in the evening?
Because Bhagwan Vamana is said to have appeared in Abhijit Muhurat, the roughly 48-minute window straddling local noon. Most jayanti observances follow the hour of the avatar's appearance — Janmashtami is at midnight for the same reason.

Is Bali really immortal?
In the Puranic tradition, yes. Mahabali is counted among the Chiranjivi, the eight immortals, and is said to become the Indra of the next manvantara. His demotion was, in effect, a promotion delayed.

Bringing the Day Home

Vamana Jayanti asks something unusually direct of the person observing it: notice where you are standing on your own achievements, and offer that ground willingly rather than waiting for it to be taken. Bali's greatness was not that he ruled three worlds. It was that when the third step had nowhere to land, he bowed.

Keep the fast if you can. Chant the Vishnu Sahasranama. Give away curd, rice and something you would rather keep. And two days later, on 25 September, tie the Anant Sutra for Anant Chaturdashi — the last great Vishnu observance of Bhadrapada, and the natural close of this fortnight of devotion.
