Sawan 2026 Somvar Vrat calendar with Lord Shiva, monsoon temple setting and puja details

Sawan 2026: Start Date, Somvar Vrat Calendar, Puja Vidhi & Full Festival List

There is a particular quality to the air when Sawan arrives. The heat of Jyeshtha and Ashadha breaks, the first serious rains come down, and something in the heart of every Shiva bhakt begins to stir. Bel patra sellers appear outside temples. The sound of Bam Bam Bhole travels along highways as kanwariyas walk barefoot with Gangajal on their shoulders. For one month, the whole of North India seems to turn towards Kailash.

Shravan Maas — Sawan — begins on Thursday, 30 July 2026. If you have been meaning to begin a vrat, restart your daily puja, or simply bring more devotion into your home, there is no more forgiving month in the entire Hindu year to start.

⏰ Sawan 2026 (North India, Purnimanta): Thursday, 30 July 2026 to Friday, 28 August 2026. The first Sawan Somvar falls on Monday, 3 August 2026.

Why Sawan Is the Most Beloved Month of Shiva

The Puranas give us the reason, and it is one of the most moving stories in all of Sanatan Dharma.

When the devas and asuras churned the cosmic ocean during Samudra Manthan, the first thing to emerge was not amrit — it was halahal, a poison so potent it threatened to consume all creation. No one could hold it. In that moment Bhagwan Shiva stepped forward, gathered the poison in His palm and drank it. Mata Parvati, in alarm, pressed His throat so the halahal would go no further, and it lodged there — turning His throat blue. From that day He is Neelkanth, the blue-throated one.

The poison burned. To cool Him, the devas poured river water over Him ceaselessly, and Indra sent rain. That churning is said to have taken place in the month of Shravan. This is why, to this day, we do not merely worship Shiva in Sawan — we cool Him. Every lota of water, every drop of Gangajal, every bel patra placed on the Shivling is a continuation of that act of gratitude.

There is a second reason too. Sawan is when Mata Parvati completed the severe penance by which she won Shiva as her husband. For this reason unmarried girls keep the Somvar vrat praying for a good spouse, and married women keep it for the long life and wellbeing of their husbands.

Sawan Somvar Vrat Puja Vidhi — Step by Step

  1. Rise early and bathe. Snan before sunrise, ideally in the Brahma Muhurta. Add a few drops of Gangajal to your bath water if a river bath is not possible. Wear clean clothes — white, saffron or light green are considered auspicious.
  2. Take the sankalp. Sit facing east or north, hold water and akshat in your right palm, and resolve aloud how many Somvars you will keep and for what purpose.
  3. Perform Jalabhishek. Pour pure water over the Shivling in a thin, unbroken stream while chanting Om Namah Shivaya. Gangajal is the most meritorious offering of all. See the full jalabhishek vidhi →
  4. Panchamrit Abhishek. Follow with milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar — one at a time, with clean water in between. Finish with water again.
  5. Offer bel patra. Three-leafed, unbroken, placed smooth side down. Even a single leaf offered with faith is said to equal great charity.
  6. Chandan, vibhuti, akshat and flowers. Apply a tripund of chandan or vibhuti, offer akshat, dhatura, aak flowers and white blossoms. Never offer tulsi, ketaki flowers or haldi on a Shivling. Know all 5 forbidden offerings →
  7. Light the deepak and dhoop. A pure desi ghee lamp and kapoor arti complete the puja.
  8. Recite and offer bhog. Read the Sawan Somvar Vrat Katha, offer bhog, then perform aarti and distribute prasad.

Sawan Vrat Fasting Rules

  • Most devotees keep a phalahar vrat — fruits, milk, sabudana, kuttu or singhara atta, and sendha namak only.
  • A stricter form is nirjala (without water); the gentlest is a single evening meal after the aarti. Choose according to your health — Shiva accepts the intention, not the severity.
  • Avoid the entire month: onion, garlic, non-vegetarian food, alcohol, brinjal, and in many households green leafy vegetables and curd.
  • Break the fast only after the evening puja and aarti, with satvik food.
  • Those unwell, pregnant, elderly or on medication should keep the puja and skip the fast. There is no sin in this.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does Sawan 2026 start and end?
In North India, Sawan 2026 runs from Thursday, 30 July to Friday, 28 August 2026. In Maharashtra, Gujarat and South India it runs from 13 August to 11 September 2026.

How many Sawan Somvar are there in 2026?
Four — 3, 10, 17 and 24 August 2026. Note that 17 August is also Nag Panchami, a rare and auspicious combination.

Can I start the Somvar vrat from the second or third Monday?
Yes. Ideally one begins on the first Somvar, but if circumstances prevented it, begin whenever you can with a proper sankalp. Sincerity matters more than the calendar.

Should I keep Sawan Somvar or the 16 Somvar vrat?
Sawan Somvar covers the four Mondays of Shravan only. The Solah Somvar vrat runs sixteen consecutive Mondays ending with udyapan — and Sawan is the most auspicious time of year to begin it.

Why should tulsi never be offered to Shiva?
The Padma Purana relates that Tulsi, as Vrinda, was the wife of the asura Jalandhar whom Shiva destroyed; she therefore withheld herself from His worship. Tulsi is offered to Vishnu, not to the Shivling.

Can water from the tap be used for abhishek if I have no Gangajal?
Yes, clean water offered with devotion is accepted. But adding even a few drops of Gangajal to your lota is traditionally held to multiply the merit many times over.

Is it necessary to visit a temple, or can I do Sawan puja at home?
A home puja before a Shivling, a Shiva photograph, or even a parthiv (clay) Shivling you make yourself is entirely valid. Mahadev is Ashutosh — the one easily pleased.

What is the significance of the Kanwar Yatra in Sawan?
Kanwariyas carry Gangajal on foot from Haridwar, Gaumukh, Gangotri or Sultanganj to their local Shiva temple, offering it on Sawan Shivratri. It is a vow of endurance and surrender, echoing the devas cooling Neelkanth.

Begin This Sawan Prepared

Sawan asks very little of us and gives a great deal in return. A lota of water. A bel patra. A quiet Om Namah Shivaya before the day begins. For thirty days the doors of Kailash are said to stand open wider than at any other time of year — and Mahadev, who drank poison so the world could live, asks only that we remember Him.

💧 Pure Gangajal, delivered to your door before Sawan begins

Authentic Gangajal for jalabhishek on every Sawan Somvar — sealed, sanctified and ready for your puja ghar. Order now so it reaches you well before 30 July.
