Tulsidas Jayanti 2026: Date, Puja Vidhi, Ramcharitmanas Path & Significance

Every home that has ever chanted the Hanuman Chalisa on a Tuesday evening, every family that has sat through a Sunderkand path before a wedding or a new business, every child who first heard the Ramayan not in Sanskrit but in the warm, singable Awadhi of "Mangal Bhavan Amangal Haari" — all of it flows from one man. Goswami Tulsidas.

This year, Tulsidas Jayanti falls on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, on Shravan Shukla Saptami. It arrives in the final week of Sawan, when the air in Kashi and Chitrakoot is already thick with bhajan and rain. For devotees, it is not merely a poet's birthday. It is the day we thank the saint who put Bhagwan Ram into the mouths of ordinary people — and gave us the forty verses that millions still recite when they are afraid.

⏰ Tulsidas Jayanti 2026 — Wednesday, 19 August 2026. Saptami Tithi runs from 5:50 PM on 18 August to 7:19 PM on 19 August (IST). The most auspicious window for path and puja is Brahma Muhurat, 4:32 AM – 5:20 AM.

Tulsidas Jayanti 2026: Date, Tithi & Muhurat

Tulsidas Jayanti is observed on the Saptami Tithi of the Shukla Paksha of Shravan month. Because the tithi spans two calendar days, the observance is fixed to the day on which Saptami is present at sunrise and through the day — which in 2026 is Wednesday, 19 August.

Who Was Goswami Tulsidas?

He was born Rambola Dubey in the village of Rajapur, in the Chitrakoot region of present-day Uttar Pradesh, on the banks of the Yamuna. Tradition places his birth in Vikram Samvat 1554 (1497 CE), though several scholars argue for 1511 CE. What is not disputed is what followed.

The child was orphaned early and spent years as a wandering, hungry boy. A sage named Narharidas took him in, gave him the Ram Mantra, and taught him the Ramayan. Rambola later married Ratnavali — and here comes the turning point every Indian household knows.

The Rebuke That Made a Saint

Tulsidas was consumed by love for his wife. One day, when Ratnavali had gone to her parents' home, he followed her through a storm, crossing a swollen river at night. She looked at him and said the words that changed Sanatana Dharma forever: had he shown even half this attachment towards Shri Ram, he would have crossed the ocean of worldly existence itself.

He left that night. He never returned to household life. He walked to Kashi, to Ayodhya, to Chitrakoot, and gave the rest of his years to Ram.

The Darshan at Chitrakoot

The most beloved episode of his life happened at Chitrakoot. Tulsidas longed to see Shri Ram with his own eyes but did not recognise Him when He came. It was Hanuman ji, so the tradition holds, who guided him — and on Mauni Amavasya, while making sandal paste, Tulsidas received the darshan of Ram and Lakshman as two young princes on horseback, and applied the chandan tilak to the Lord's forehead with his own hand. This is why chandan holds such a tender place in Tulsidas Jayanti worship.

What He Wrote

Tulsidas began the Ramcharitmanas at Ayodhya on Ram Navami in Vikram Samvat 1631 (1574 CE) and completed it in two years, seven months and twenty-six days. He wrote it in Awadhi — the language of farmers and grandmothers — not Sanskrit. Pandits of the time objected. History decided otherwise: the Ramcharitmanas became the single most recited scripture in North India.

Beyond it he gave us the Hanuman Chalisa, Vinaya Patrika, Hanuman Bahuk, Dohavali, Kavitavali, Barvai Ramayan, Janaki Mangal and Parvati Mangal. He also founded the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple in Varanasi, at the spot where he is said to have had Hanuman ji's darshan — a temple that still draws lakhs every Tuesday and Saturday.

He left his body at Assi Ghat in Kashi in Vikram Samvat 1680 (1623 CE), on Shravan Krishna Teej, with the name of Ram on his lips.

Why Tulsidas Jayanti Matters

Before Tulsidas, bhakti of Shri Ram lived largely in Sanskrit, behind a wall of learning. After him, it lived in every courtyard. A widow in a village could sing the Ramcharitmanas. A labourer could recite the Chalisa. That democratisation of devotion is the gift we honour on this day.

Observing Tulsidas Jayanti is believed to bring clarity of speech, success in study and writing, protection from fear and negativity through Hanuman ji's grace, and steadiness of mind for anyone struggling with attachment or restlessness.

Tulsidas Jayanti Puja Vidhi: Step by Step

  1. Wake in Brahma Muhurat (4:32 AM – 5:20 AM) and bathe. Wear clean, preferably light-coloured clothes.
  2. Clean the puja sthal and sprinkle Gangajal to purify the space and yourself.
  3. Set up the chauki. Place a red or yellow cloth. Install images or idols of Shri Ram, Sita ji, Lakshman ji and Hanuman ji. Beside them, place a copy of the Ramcharitmanas on a small wooden stand, and a picture of Goswami Tulsidas if you have one.
  4. Light a desi ghee diya and an incense stick. Light Bhimseni kapoor at the end for aarti.
  5. Offer tilak — roli and chandan to Shri Ram and the Ramcharitmanas itself. Offer sindoor mixed in chameli oil to Hanuman ji.
  6. Offer akshat, flowers (tulsi patra to Shri Ram, red flowers to Hanuman ji), and panchmeva or gud-chana as bhog.
  7. Do the path. This is the heart of the day — see the section below.
  8. Perform aarti with the ghee diya and kapoor, then Hanuman ji ki aarti.
  9. Distribute prasad and, if possible, donate a copy of the Ramcharitmanas or Hanuman Chalisa to a temple or to someone who will read it. On Tulsidas Jayanti, giving away the word is considered the highest daan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a fast (vrat) on Tulsidas Jayanti?
There is no compulsory vrat. Many devotees keep a satvik day — no onion, garlic, meat or alcohol — and take a single meal after completing the path. Fasting is optional; the path is the essence.

Can women recite the Hanuman Chalisa and Sunderkand?
Yes. There is no scriptural bar. Women across India recite both daily. The only caution followed traditionally is to avoid the path during the days of menstruation, and even that is a matter of family custom rather than a rule Tulsidas ever wrote.

What is the difference between Ramcharitmanas and Valmiki Ramayan?
Valmiki's Ramayan is the original Sanskrit epic, composed as itihasa. Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas is a devotional retelling in Awadhi, structured as a conversation across four narrators, with bhakti — not history — at its centre. Both are revered; they serve different purposes.

Which day is best to start reading the Ramcharitmanas?
Tulsidas Jayanti and Ram Navami are the two most auspicious starting points. Begin with Balkand, read at a fixed time daily, and keep the granth on a wooden stand — never directly on the floor.

Can I observe Tulsidas Jayanti if I live abroad?
Absolutely. Adjust the timings to your local sunrise, keep the same order of puja, and use whatever samagri you can source. If arranging a full path is not possible, book an online path performed in your name in India — the sankalp carries.

What should I donate on this day?
Copies of the Ramcharitmanas or Hanuman Chalisa, books to students, food to the needy, or gud and chana to a Hanuman temple. Donating scripture is considered the defining daan of Tulsidas Jayanti.

A Closing Thought

Tulsidas wrote that he was neither learned nor pure, that he came to Shri Ram with nothing but need. That honesty is why his words still work — for the frightened, the tired, the ones who cannot manage an elaborate puja. On 19 August 2026, you do not need much. A ghee diya, a little chandan, and the Chalisa read slowly, with attention, is a complete Tulsidas Jayanti.
