Karwa Chauth Vrat Vidhi — Step by Step

The Night Before: Sargi

Before sunrise, the mother-in-law prepares a Sargi thali for her daughter-in-law. Dry fruits are the heart of that thali — a Vratam Dry Fruit Falhari Mixture (₹360) is an easy way to put it together — because it has to carry her through the whole day. After eating Sargi, no food or water is consumed until the moon is sighted that night.

Step 1: Morning Sankalp

Wake before sunrise, take a bath, and wear festive clothes — traditionally red or pink. Apply sindoor and take a sankalp for your husband's long life.

Step 2: The Daylong Fast

Observe a complete nirjala (waterless) fast throughout the day. No food, no water until after moon darshan.

Step 3: Evening Puja

In the evening, set up the puja thali with the Karwa pot filled with water, diya, roli, akshat, and prasad. A picture of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva is placed for worship.

Step 5: The Moon Darshan Ritual

2. Then look at your husband's face through the same sieve
3. Offer arghya — water from the Karwa — to the moon
4. Your husband offers water to you and you break your fast

Step 6: Break the Fast

After moon darshan, your husband offers you water and sweets. Enjoy the prasad with the family.
