Jhulan Yatra 2026: Dates, Vrindavan Celebration & Jhula Vidhi at Home
For a few golden days at the end of Shravan, Vrindavan does not walk — it sways. Every temple courtyard hangs a swing. Silver hindolas, flower hindolas, swings of banana leaf and marigold, swings dressed in monsoon greens. And on each one sits the Divine Couple, Shri Radha and Shri Krishna, being gently pushed back and forth by devotees who have waited all year for this seva.
This is Jhulan Yatra — also called Jhulan Utsav, Hindola Utsav or simply Jhulan Leela. It is one of the sweetest festivals in the entire Vaishnava calendar, and in 2026 it is happening right now.
Jhulan Yatra 2026: Dates & Timings
Jhulan is not a single-day vrat. It is a window of days in which the swing seva is offered — most temples hold their main jhulan darshan in the evening, roughly between the sandhya aarti and shayan aarti.
| Day | Date (2026) | Tithi / Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Jhulan begins (Vrindavan extended) | Saturday, 15 August | Shravan Shukla Tritiya — 13-day jhulan in many Braj temples |
| Main Jhulan Yatra begins | Sunday, 23 August | Shravan Shukla Ekadashi (Pavitropana / Putrada Ekadashi) |
| Peak swing days | 24–27 August | Dwadashi to Chaturdashi — daily fresh shringar & flower themes |
| Jhulan Purnima (concluding day) | Friday, 28 August | Shravan Purnima — also Raksha Bandhan & Balarama Purnima |
Best time for jhulan seva at home: the pradosh window, roughly one and a half hours after sunset. This is the hour Braj tradition associates with the Divine Couple's evening leela.
The Story Behind the Swing
Jhulan Yatra remembers a very specific mood of Vrindavan — the monsoon. The Yamuna is full, the earth is soft, peacocks are calling, and the whole of Braj smells of wet kadamba flowers. In this season, the gopis would tie swings from the great tamarind and kadamba trees along the riverbank.
The most beloved telling goes like this. Shri Radha was overcome by viraha — the ache of separation from Krishna. Her sakhis, unable to bear Her sorrow, prepared a swing beneath a giant imli tree and adorned it with flowers, hoping to distract Her. And then, as She turned, Krishna was simply there — standing before Her, flute in hand, as if He had never been away.
Separation dissolved. The sakhis seated the Divine Couple on the swing together and began to push, singing, laughing, showering petals. That single moment of reunion — milan after viraha — is what every jhula in every temple is re-enacting.
Why the swing itself matters
The swing is not decoration. In bhakti darshan it carries meaning:
- The rhythm of the soul. The jhula moves toward the Lord and away from Him, again and again — exactly like the human heart, drawn to God and then distracted by the world.
- Seva without hierarchy. Anyone may push the swing. The child, the elder, the newcomer, the lifelong devotee — all offer the same simple service.
- Sakhya bhava. Unlike the awe of a royal darshan, jhulan invites intimacy. Here the Lord is not a distant king; He is the beloved being played with.
- Monsoon as grace. Shravan's rain is understood as divine mercy pouring down. Jhulan is the celebration held inside that mercy.
How Jhulan Yatra Is Celebrated in Vrindavan
Braj is the heart of this festival. Banke Bihari Ji's temple sees enormous crowds for the rare hindola darshan; Radha Raman, Radha Damodar, Radha Vallabh and the ISKCON temple each dress their own swings with a new theme every single evening — one night all white flowers, the next night marigold and green, the next silver and pearl.
What makes it different from a temple visit on any other day is the sound. Jhulan is a kirtan festival. Devotees sing jhulan-specific padavali — songs written purely about the swing — and the courtyard fills with the same two lines repeated until nobody is watching the clock any more.
Outside Braj, Jagannath Puri observes its own Jhulan (Hindola) in Shravan, and Vaishnava homes across Bengal, Odisha, Gujarat and Rajasthan set up small household swings.
Jhulan Vidhi: How to Set Up a Jhula at Home
You do not need a grand hindola. A small swing, made with love, is complete seva.
Step by step
- Clean and prepare the space. Wash the mandir area and sprinkle Gangajal for purification.
- Make or place the jhula. A small wooden or metal swing, or even a decorated cloth cradle suspended from a frame, works perfectly.
- Decorate it. Fresh flowers, tulsi leaves, mango or banana leaves, and coloured cloth. Traditionally the theme changes each of the days.
- Seat the Divine Couple. Place your Radha-Krishna murti or a framed image on the swing. If you have only a Laddu Gopal, He may be seated alone.
- Offer shringar. Apply chandan tilak, offer roli, akshat, and a few drops of itra.
- Light the diya and dhoop. Use a pure desi ghee lamp with a cotton wick.
- Offer bhog. Makhan-mishri, panjiri, kheer, seasonal fruit, or panchmeva. Krishna's favourites are simple.
- Swing and sing. Gently push the jhula while chanting. This is the heart of the festival — do it unhurriedly, for as long as the mood holds.
- Aarti and pranam. Conclude with aarti using Bhimseni kapoor on your aarti thali, then distribute prasad.
Mantras to chant while swinging
- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare
- Radhe Radhe Shyam Milade
- Om Kleem Krishnaya Namah
- Shri Radha Kripa Kataksh Stotram — especially powerful in Shravan
The Shri Radha Kripa Kataksh Stotram — 21 Path, performed by our pandits with your name and gotra in the sankalp. Recited during Jhulan Yatra, it is traditionally said to draw Radha Rani's kripa toward the whole household.

Is There a Fast on Jhulan Yatra?
Jhulan Yatra itself is a festival of joy, not austerity — there is no compulsory fast across the whole period. However, two things overlap:
- 23 August is Shravan Shukla Ekadashi. Devotees observing Ekadashi will keep the usual grain-free vrat that day and take parana the next morning.
- 28 August is Shravan Purnima. Many keep a light satvik diet, take a holy bath in the morning, and perform Shravani Upakarma.
Otherwise, most families simply keep the days satvik: no onion, no garlic, no non-vegetarian food, and no alcohol — the standard Shravan discipline.

Jhulan Yatra Leads Straight to Janmashtami
There is a beautiful logic to the Bhadrapada calendar. Jhulan ends on Shravan Purnima on 28 August. One week later, on Friday, 4 September 2026, comes Krishna Janmashtami — the midnight of His appearance.
Traditionally, families do not put the jhula away after Purnima. They keep it out, and on Janmashtami night the newborn Laddu Gopal is placed in that very cradle and swung at midnight. Jhulan is, in a sense, the preparation — the swing is readied first, and the Lord arrives in it later.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is Jhulan Yatra 2026?
The main Jhulan Yatra runs from 23 August to 28 August 2026, beginning on Shravan Shukla Ekadashi and ending on Shravan Purnima. Several Vrindavan temples observe an extended 13-day Jhulan starting 15 August.
Can I celebrate Jhulan Yatra at home without a Radha-Krishna murti?
Yes. A framed picture of the Divine Couple placed on a small decorated swing is completely acceptable. Many households use their Laddu Gopal alone. Bhava matters more than the murti.
Is fasting required during Jhulan Yatra?
No fast is prescribed for Jhulan itself. Those observing Shravan Shukla Ekadashi on 23 August will keep that vrat, and many keep a satvik diet through the period, but Jhulan is fundamentally a celebration rather than an austerity.
Which direction should the jhula face?
Place the swing so that the Divine Couple face east or north, with the devotee facing west or south while offering seva. In many homes the north-east corner (Ishan kon) of the puja room is preferred.
What bhog should be offered on the jhula?
Makhan-mishri is the classic offering. Panjiri, kheer, seasonal fruits, tulsi-garnished sweets and panchmeva are all traditional. Avoid onion, garlic and any tamasic ingredient.
What is the difference between Jhulan Yatra and Hindola Utsav?
They are the same festival under different regional names. "Jhulan" is the Braj and Bengali usage; "Hindola" is more common in Gujarat, Rajasthan and among Pushtimarg Vaishnavas. Jagannath Puri's Shravan swing festival is also called Jhulan.
Can I keep the jhula out after Purnima?
Yes, and it is encouraged. Many families keep the swing until Janmashtami on 4 September, when Laddu Gopal is placed in it at midnight.
A Closing Thought
Of all the ways Sanatana Dharma teaches us to approach the Divine — through fire, through fasting, through silence, through pilgrimage — Jhulan Yatra chooses the gentlest one. It says: sit with Him. Push the swing. Sing something. Do not ask for anything.
This week, hang a small swing in your home. Put a flower on it. Push it slowly. That is the whole vidhi.
