Kalashtami is observed every lunar month on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha (the eighth day of the waning moon). Because Kaal Bhairav is a nocturnal deity, His vrat is kept on the day when Ashtami prevails during the night, and the puja peaks at midnight.

Who Is Kaal Bhairav? The Story Behind the Fierce Form of Shiva

Kaal Bhairav is the ferocious manifestation of Lord Shiva — so powerful that even Kaal (Time and Death) bows before Him. The Shiva Purana tells that once Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva debated who was supreme. In his pride, Brahma spoke disrespectfully of Shiva. From Shiva's fury arose a blazing form — Bhairav — who, as a lesson in humility, severed Brahma's fifth head.

To atone for Brahmahatya (the sin of the act), Bhairav wandered as a mendicant carrying the skull until He reached Kashi (Varanasi), where the sin finally fell away.
