Hartalika Teej Vrat 2026 – Complete Guide (Nirjala Fast Vidhi, Katha & Significance)

Hartalika Teej Vrat 2026 – Complete Guide (Nirjala Fast Vidhi, Katha & Significance)

Hartalika Teej is one of the most sacred vrats observed by Hindu women — dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. Observed on the third day (Tritiya) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapad, it is one of the most difficult and powerful fasts in the Hindu calendar — a complete nirjala (no food, no water) fast lasting 24 hours.

Women observe this vrat for marital happiness, a devoted husband, long life of the husband, and — for unmarried women — to receive a husband as devoted and noble as Lord Shiva.

Hartalika Teej 2026 Date

Hartalika Teej 2026 falls in August 2026 — check the Hindu Panchang for the exact Bhadrapad Shukla Tritiya date and time in your city. The fast begins at sunrise and ends the following morning after Shiva-Parvati puja.

Why is it Called Hartalika Teej?

The name comes from two Sanskrit words: Harat (abduction/taking away) and Aalika (female friend). According to the Puranas, Goddess Parvati's friends took her away into a forest to protect her from an unwanted marriage arranged by her father Himavan. In the forest, Parvati performed an intense penance and created a Shivalinga from sand, worshipping Lord Shiva with complete devotion. Shiva was moved by her tapasya and promised to marry her. This is the story at the heart of Hartalika Teej.

Hartalika Teej Vrat Vidhi — Step by Step

The Night Before: Preparation

On the night before Hartalika Teej, eat a light meal. Some traditions observe a partial fast the evening before as well. Prepare all samagri in advance.

Step 1: The Nirjala Fast Begins

At sunrise on Hartalika Teej, the complete nirjala fast begins. No food, no water, no medicine (where possible) for 24 hours. This complete surrender is what makes this vrat uniquely powerful.

Step 2: Make the Sand Shivalinga

A fresh Shivalinga made of sand or clay is created on this day. This is not worshipped throughout the year — it is made specially for Hartalika Teej, representing Parvati's fresh creation from the earth.

Step 3: Evening Puja

In the evening, perform the complete Shiva-Parvati puja. Offer Bel Patra to the Shivalinga, apply Roli and Chandan, offer flowers. Offer sindoor and bangles to Goddess Parvati's image. Light the diya and perform abhishek with Gangajal.

Step 4: Read the Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha

The complete Hartalika Teej Katha must be read or heard during the puja. This is the story of Parvati's tapasya and Shiva's blessing.

Step 5: Jagran — Night Vigil

The night of Hartalika Teej is spent in jagran — awake, singing bhajans, performing Shiva-Parvati kirtans, and maintaining devotion through the night. This is considered the most powerful part of the vrat.

Step 6: Morning Puja and Breaking the Fast

The next morning, perform a final puja. The sand Shivalinga is immersed in a river or water body. The fast is then broken with prasad after taking the blessings of elders.
