Ravivar Vrat (Sunday Fast) – Complete Guide for Surya Dev: Vidhi, Arghya & Significance
The Ravivar (Sunday) Vrat is dedicated to Lord Surya Dev — the Sun God, giver of life, light, health, success, and vitality. One of the oldest Vedic vrats, the Sunday fast is observed for strong health, career success, confidence, overcoming enemies, and the blessings of a long, bright life.
In Vedic astrology, the Sun (Surya) rules the soul, career, father, authority, and self-confidence. If your Kundali shows a weak or afflicted Sun placement, the Ravivar Vrat is one of the most effective remedies.

Ravivar Vrat Vidhi — Step by Step
Step 1: Wake Before Sunrise
The Ravivar Vrat begins at sunrise. Wake before dawn, take a bath, and wear clean red or orange-coloured clothes — the colours of the rising sun.
Step 2: Offer Arghya to the Rising Sun
This is the most essential act of the Ravivar Vrat. Stand facing east as the sun rises. Hold a copper vessel filled with water mixed with Gangajal, Roli, and red flowers. Pour the water slowly while looking at the sun (with eyes slightly lowered), chanting "Om Suryaya Namah" or the Surya Gayatri Mantra. The water offered to the rising sun creates a prism that is spiritually and scientifically said to channel solar energy into the devotee.
Step 3: Surya Puja
Set up a puja sthal with Surya Dev's image. Offer red flowers, Akshat, Roli, and jaggery. Light a diya with Desi Ghee. Chant "Om Ghrini Surya Adityah" — Surya's core mantra — 108 times.
Step 4: Read the Ravivar Vrat Katha
The complete Ravivar Vrat Katha must be read or heard. The story tells of a woman whose sincere Sunday fasting brought her family back from poverty to prosperity through Surya Dev's blessings.

Step 5: The Fast
On Ravivar Vrat, eat only one meal — before sunset. The meal must be Satvik (pure, simple). Most devotees eat in the afternoon. Wheat-based foods and jaggery are traditional. Avoid salt in some traditions — check your family's practice.
Step 6: Aarti and Prasad
Perform Surya Dev's aarti. Distribute jaggery and wheat prasad to family members.
Surya Gayatri Mantra — The Most Powerful Solar Chant
Om Bhur Bhuvaḥ Swaḥ
Tat-savitur Vareñyaṃ
Bhargo Devasya Dhīmahi
Dhiyo Yo Naḥ Prachodayāt
Chanting the Gayatri Mantra 108 times during the Ravivar Vrat is said to massively amplify the benefits of the fast. The Gayatri is the mantra of Surya himself.
