Bahula Chauth is kept for something simpler and far more urgent — a mother fasting all day so that her child stays safe, healthy and long-lived. The Story of Bahula: A Promise Kept in a Forest

Bahula was a cow, born of the lineage of Kamadhenu herself, who lived in the ashram of a sage. She had a newborn calf waiting for her, and each evening she made her way home through the forest.

One evening a lion stepped into her path. He was hungry, and he told her plainly that she would be his meal.

Bahula did not run and she did not beg for her life. She asked for one thing only — a little time. "My calf has not been fed. Let me go, let me feed my child, and I will return to you and you may eat me. I give you my word."

The lion, moved or perhaps curious, let her go. Bahula went home, fed her calf, told her family what she had promised — and then, while they wept and pleaded with her to stay, she turned around and walked back into the forest to keep her word.

She found the lion waiting and offered herself. And the lion vanished. In his place stood Bhagwan Shri Krishna, who had taken that form to test whether truth and dharma could survive when they cost everything. Bahula had passed. Krishna blessed her: that on this day, in every year to come, mothers would remember her name and fast for the well-being of their children — and their children would be protected.

That is the heart of Bahula Chauth. It is not a vrat about asking. It is a vrat about a mother who told the truth when a lie would have saved her life.

Why Ganesha is worshipped on the same day

Every Krishna Paksha Chaturthi belongs to Shri Ganesha as Sankashti Chaturthi — sankashti meaning deliverance from difficulty. In Bhadrapada this form is called Heramba, the five-faced Ganapati who rides a lion and is invoked specifically as the protector of the weak and the helpless.

Notice the symmetry. Heramba rides the lion; Bahula faced the lion. Both stories, on the same tithi, say the same thing: courage and truth are protected by the Divine. Worshipping Ganesha and remembering Bahula on 31 August is not two separate rituals awkwardly stacked — it is one message told twice.

Bahula Chauth Puja Vidhi: Step by Step

1. Sankalp at sunrise. Bathe early, wear clean clothes, and take the sankalp with water and akshat in your palm, naming your children and your intention for their long life and safety.
2. Set the sthan. Clean the puja area and place an image or idol of Shri Ganesha, and alongside it a picture or clay figure of a cow with her calf — the murti of Bahula and her bachhda.
3. Ganesha puja first. Offer roli and chandan tilak, akshat, durva grass, red flowers and modak or laddoo. Chant Om Gan Ganapataye Namah 108 times.
4. Tie the mauli. Offer mauli at the sthan and tie a thread on your children's wrists as a raksha.
5. Gau puja. If you can reach a real cow and calf, this is the highest form of the day's worship — apply tilak, offer green grass or bajra, and do parikrama. At home, do the same to the image.
6. Listen to the Bahula katha in the evening, before the Godhuli window, with the family gathered.
7. Sandhya aarti. Light a desi ghee diya and Bhimseni kapoor on your aarti thali and perform the aarti in the Godhuli period.
8. Chandra arghya. When the moon rises, offer arghya with water mixed with Gangajal, akshat and a few flowers, looking at the moon through the stream of water. Only then break the fast.
9. Prasad and daan. Distribute panchmeva and sweets, and give food or grass in charity to a cow.

Yes. Although it is traditionally described as a vrat for sons, it is observed today for the well-being of all children, and grandmothers, fathers and anyone praying for a child's health may keep it. The Sankashti Chaturthi part of the day is open to everyone without exception.

What is Bol Choth?
Bol Choth is the Gujarati name for this same day. There, women avoid wheat and cutting with a knife, eat bajra-based food, and worship the cow and calf. The tithi, the katha and the intent are identical.

What if I cannot see the moon because of clouds?
Offer the arghya facing the direction of moonrise at the calculated time and break the fast. Monsoon skies in Bhadrapada make this common, and the shastra permits it.
