Aja Ekadashi 2026: Date, Parana Time, Vrat Katha & Puja Vidhi

Of the twenty-four Ekadashis that turn through the Hindu year, few carry a promise as bold as Aja Ekadashi. The scriptures say that one who fasts on this day with faith earns merit equal to a thousand Ashwamedha yajnas — a sacrifice once performed only by emperors. And behind that promise sits one of the most heartbreaking and most redemptive stories in all of Sanatan Dharma: the story of King Harishchandra, who lost everything for the sake of truth, and got it all back on this very tithi.

In 2026, Aja Ekadashi falls on Monday, 7 September — the Ekadashi of Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha. It is the first Ekadashi of the newly-begun Bhadrapada month, and this year it carries an added grace: falling on a Somvar, it joins the devotion of Vishnu with the day of Bhagwan Shiva.

⏰ Aja Ekadashi 2026 is on Monday, 7 September. Parana (fast-breaking) must be done on Tuesday, 8 September between approximately 06:02 AM and 08:33 AM IST — missing this window is considered a fault in the vrat.

Aja Ekadashi 2026: Date & Timings

Ekadashi vrat is always observed on the day when the tithi is present at sunrise. Because the Ekadashi tithi in 2026 begins on the evening of 6 September and remains through sunrise on 7 September, the fast is kept on Monday, 7 September 2026.

Event Date & Time (IST)
Ekadashi Tithi begins Sunday, 6 September 2026 — 07:29 PM
Ekadashi Tithi ends Monday, 7 September 2026 — 05:03 PM
Vrat observed on Monday, 7 September 2026
Parana (break fast) Tuesday, 8 September 2026 — approx. 06:02 AM to 08:33 AM
Paksha / Maas Krishna Paksha, Bhadrapada

Timings are calculated for Delhi/North India. Sunrise shifts by 20–40 minutes across India and much more for devotees abroad, so please confirm your parana window against a panchang for your own city.

The Story of Aja Ekadashi: King Harishchandra's Fast

Yudhishthira once asked Bhagwan Krishna about the Ekadashi of Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha. Krishna answered by telling him about Satyavadi Harishchandra — the king who would not tell a lie, not even to save his own life.

Tested by Sage Vishwamitra, Harishchandra gave away his entire kingdom to honour a promise. Left with nothing but his word, he was forced to sell his queen Taramati and his son Rohitashwa into servitude, and to sell himself to a chandala who kept the cremation grounds of Kashi. The emperor of Ayodhya now spent his days collecting the tax on funeral pyres.

Then the cruellest blow: his son Rohitashwa died of a snakebite. Taramati carried the child's body to the shmashan for cremation — and Harishchandra, bound by his duty, had to ask his own grieving wife for the cremation fee he knew she could not pay. He did not break. He did not lie.

It was at this lowest point that Sage Gautama found him and told him of Aja Ekadashi — advising him to fast on this tithi with complete faith. Harishchandra observed the vrat. And the merit of that single day undid everything: the devas descended, Rohitashwa was restored to life, Taramati regained her royal dignity, and Harishchandra was returned his kingdom and, in time, a place in the higher lokas.

Why This Katha Still Matters

Aja Ekadashi is therefore known as the vrat of restoration. It is kept by those who have lost something — position, health, wealth, peace of mind, a relationship — and who wish to have it restored. The teaching underneath is quieter and harder: Harishchandra was not rescued because he fasted. He was rescued because he held to dharma when dharma cost him everything, and the fast was the door through which that steadfastness was finally rewarded.

Aja Ekadashi Puja Vidhi: Step by Step

The vrat properly begins on Dashami — the day before — and ends with parana on Dwadashi.

On Dashami (Sunday, 6 September)

  1. Take only one satvik meal, before sunset. Avoid rice, onion, garlic, and any tamasic food.
  2. Sleep on the floor if you are able, and practise brahmacharya.
  3. Resolve mentally to keep the fast — this sankalp is what makes it a vrat rather than merely skipping food.

On Ekadashi (Monday, 7 September)

  1. Snan & Sankalp: Bathe before sunrise, adding a few drops of Gangajal to your water. Wear clean yellow or white clothes. Take the formal sankalp of the vrat.
  2. Sthapana: Place an idol or picture of Bhagwan Vishnu on a clean chowki. Set a copper kalash beside it, filled with water and topped with mango leaves and a coconut.
  3. Shodashopachar Puja: Offer chandan, roli, akshat, flowers, dhoop and a desi ghee deepak.
  4. Tulsi Dal: No Vishnu puja is complete without tulsi leaves. Pluck them the previous evening — tulsi should never be picked on Ekadashi itself.
  5. Bhog: Offer panchmeva, fruit and kheer. Every offering must include tulsi.
  6. Naam Jap: Chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya or the Vishnu Sahasranama through the day.
  7. Katha & Aarti: Read or listen to the Aja Ekadashi vrat katha, then perform aarti with a aarti thali and Bhimseni kapoor.
  8. Ratri Jagaran: Those keeping the strictest form stay awake through the night in bhajan and kirtan.

On Dwadashi (Tuesday, 8 September)

  1. Bathe, complete a short Vishnu puja, and offer daan — food, clothes or grain to a brahmin or someone in need.
  2. Break the fast within the parana window given above, beginning with tulsi jal.

Aja Ekadashi Fasting Rules: What to Eat, What to Avoid

Ekadashi vrat has three recognised levels of strictness. Choose honestly according to your health — the shastras never ask a sick person, a pregnant woman, or an elderly devotee to keep nirjala.

Type of Vrat What It Means
Nirjala No food and no water at all. The strictest form.
Phalahar Fruit, milk, water and vrat-friendly flours only. The most commonly kept form.
Saatvik Ahar One simple grain-free satvik meal. For those who cannot fast.

Strictly Avoid

  • Rice and all grains — the single most important Ekadashi rule
  • Onion, garlic, and all non-vegetarian food
  • Masoor dal, chana, and most pulses
  • Honey, and eating from a bell-metal vessel
  • Anger, gossip, harsh speech and quarrels — these break the vrat as surely as food does
  • Cutting hair or nails, and shaving

Permitted

  • Fruits, milk, curd, and dry fruits — a ready Vratam Dry Fruit Falhari Mixture (₹360) saves the phalahari household a great deal of preparation.
  • Sabudana, singhara atta, kuttu atta, samak rice — the grain-free Vratam All-in-One Vrat Snacks Combo (₹349) covers the phalahar day and the light Dwadashi parana meal that follows it. Those keeping nirjala should of course touch none of it until the parana window opens.
  • Potato, sweet potato, and pumpkin
  • Sendha namak (rock salt) instead of ordinary salt

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Aja Ekadashi the same as Annada Ekadashi?
Yes. The Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha Ekadashi is called Aja Ekadashi in most North Indian traditions and Annada Ekadashi in others. The date, katha and vidhi are the same.

Why is rice forbidden on Ekadashi?
The Puranas say that the demon Mura took refuge in rice grains on Ekadashi tithi, and eating rice on this day therefore obstructs the merit of the vrat. Practically, rice is heavy and tamasic and pulls the mind toward sleep rather than japa.

What happens if I miss the parana window?
Breaking the fast after the parana muhurat ends is considered a defect. If you genuinely cannot break it in time, do so as soon as possible afterwards and offer a short prayer of apology to Bhagwan Vishnu. Never continue fasting into Trayodashi.

Can I keep this vrat if I am unwell or pregnant?
Yes, in the saatvik ahar form. Dharma is never meant to damage the body that practises it. Take one simple grain-free satvik meal, do the puja fully, and read the katha — the merit rests on shraddha, not on hunger.

Can I pluck tulsi leaves on Ekadashi morning?
No. Tulsi should be picked on Dashami evening and kept in clean water overnight. Plucking tulsi on Ekadashi, Dwadashi, Sundays or after sunset is avoided.

Does Aja Ekadashi falling on a Monday change anything?
It adds to the day rather than altering it. Somvar is Bhagwan Shiva's day, so many devotees offer a simple jalabhishek in the morning before beginning the Vishnu puja. The Ekadashi vrat rules stay exactly the same.

A Final Thought

Harishchandra's story is not comfortable. He was not spared his suffering — he was carried through it. That is what Aja Ekadashi actually offers: not a shortcut around difficulty, but the strength to keep standing in it until it turns. If something in your life has been taken from you, this is the tithi the shastras point to.
