Bada Mangal celebration dedicated to Lord Hanuman in Lucknow

Bada Mangal 2026: All 8 Dates, Puja Vidhi & Lucknow Tradition

2026 update: The eight Bada Mangal Tuesdays were 5, 12, 19 and 26 May, followed by 2, 9, 16 and 23 June 2026. The 2026 observance has concluded.

Planning for 2027? Bada Mangal dates depend on the regional Jyeshtha calendar. We will add the confirmed Lucknow dates after reliable local Panchang publication.

Bada Mangal, also called Budhwa Mangal or Bada Mangalwar, is Lucknow's distinctive series of Tuesday observances dedicated to Lord Hanuman during Jyeshtha. In 2026, Adhik Maas extended the Jyeshtha cycle, creating the rare occurrence of eight Bada Mangal Tuesdays.

All 8 Bada Mangal Dates in 2026

Bada Mangal Date
First Tuesday, 5 May 2026
Second Tuesday, 12 May 2026
Third Tuesday, 19 May 2026

Fifth Tuesday, 2 June 2026
Sixth Tuesday, 9 June 2026
Seventh Tuesday, 16 June 2026

Why Were There Eight Bada Mangal in 2026?

Bada Mangal is observed on the Tuesdays associated with the Jyeshtha period in Lucknow's regional tradition. In 2026, the occurrence of Adhik Maas stretched the Jyeshtha cycle to roughly 59 days. That calendar alignment produced eight Tuesdays instead of the more usual four or five.

Why Bada Mangal Is Closely Connected with Lucknow

Bada Mangal is especially visible in Lucknow and nearby areas. Hanuman temples receive large numbers of devotees, while neighbourhoods organise bhandaras, drinking-water stalls, sharbat distribution and group recitations.

The tradition is strongly associated with the old Hanuman temple at Aliganj. Local histories connect its development with Begum Alia and the composite Ganga-Jamuni culture of Lucknow, although details of the origin story vary across oral accounts.

How to Observe Bada Mangal

  1. Begin the day with a bath, clean clothes and a simple sankalp.
  2. Visit a Hanuman temple or prepare a clean home-puja space.
  3. Offer diya, flowers, fruit and prasad according to temple or family tradition.
  4. Recite Hanuman Chalisa, Bajrang Baan or Sundarkand with devotion.
  5. Keep a Tuesday fast if it is part of your practice. See the complete Mangalwar Vrat guide. Devotees who take a longer sankalp often use the 41 Days Hanuman Vrat Kit (₹899), which carries the samagri through the full anushthan.
  6. Participate in seva through food, water or another useful contribution.

Bada Mangal Puja Samagri

  • Hanuman ji image or murti, clean red cloth and a puja thali — the Hanumanji Puja Kit Tray (₹129) keeps these basics together for a Tuesday puja
  • Diya, oil or ghee, cotton wicks, incense and camphor; some households also sound a Mangal Shankh (₹899) as the puja begins
  • Red flowers, fruit, boondi or another suitable prasad
  • Roli, akshat and mauli
  • Hanuman Chalisa or a Sundarkand text — many families keep a wooden Hanuman Chalisa (₹269) in the mandir for daily path

Temple offering rules differ. Ask the temple before offering sindoor, jasmine oil, cloth or other materials directly to a murti.

How to Organise a Respectful Bhandara

  • Choose a safe location and obtain any permissions required by local authorities or the property owner.
  • Prioritise clean drinking water, hygienic food preparation and covered serving containers.
  • Avoid blocking roads, footpaths, hospital access or emergency routes.
  • Use reusable or easily recyclable serving materials where practical and arrange waste collection.
  • Treat every visitor equally; the spirit of bhandara is seva, not promotion.
