This is Bachh Baras, also called Vats Dwadashi or Govatsa Dwadashi — the Bhadrapada vrat in which the cow and her calf are worshipped as mother and child. It is one of the most tender observances in the Sanatan calendar, and in 2026 it falls on Monday, 7 September.

Bachh Baras 2026: Date, Tithi & Puja Muhurat

Bachh Baras is observed on the Dwadashi (12th tithi) of Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada maas. Because the tithi begins in the late afternoon of 7 September, the vrat is kept on that day and the gau-vats puja is performed after sunset, when the cows traditionally return home.

Timings are calculated for Delhi. Sunset shifts by 20–40 minutes across India, so if you are in Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad or overseas, confirm your local sunset and begin the puja just after it.

A note for those also keeping Aja Ekadashi

7 September 2026 is a rare double day. Aja Ekadashi is observed on the same date, with parana on the morning of 8 September. If you are keeping both, do the Ekadashi vrat through the day, perform the Bachh Baras gau puja in the evening, and break the Ekadashi fast the next morning within the parana window — remembering that on Bachh Baras, wheat and cow's milk are avoided.

Bhadrapada Bachh Baras vs Kartik Govatsa Dwadashi — Why the Confusion?

Search for “Govatsa Dwadashi” and you will find two completely different dates, and this trips up devotees every single year. Here is the clean answer:

• Bhadrapada Krishna Dwadashi — observed in North India (Rajasthan, MP, UP, Haryana) as Bachh Baras or Vats Dwadashi. This is the one falling on 7 September 2026.
• Kartik Krishna Dwadashi — observed in Maharashtra and Gujarat as Vasu Baras, the day that opens the Diwali festivities, just before Dhanteras. In 2026 this falls in early November.

Both are gau-vats puja. Both worship the cow with her calf. They are simply two regional traditions that landed on the same tithi in two different months. If your family is from Rajasthan or MP, 7 September is your Bachh Baras.

The Meaning of Gau-Vats Puja

Go means cow. Vats means calf. On this day, they are not worshipped separately — they are worshipped together, as a pair, because the entire vrat is an offering made by one mother on behalf of another.

In Sanatan Dharma the cow is called Gau Mata because she gives without asking, feeds without counting, and asks nothing back — the definition of motherhood itself. She is said to hold all the devas within her. She is Krishna's most beloved companion; Bhagwan Shri Krishna is Gopala, the protector of cows, and it is no accident that this vrat falls in the same Bhadrapada fortnight as Krishna Janmashtami.

So when a mother garlands a calf and prays for her own child, she is saying something very old and very simple: let the same protection that surrounds this calf surround mine. The vrat is also called Nandini Vrat, after the divine cow Nandini who granted every wish.

Katha 1: Narad Muni and the Pride of Indra

Devarshi Narad once told Indra that for all the pleasures of Swarga, there was nothing in the heavens as divine as a simple cow on earth. Indra's pride was stung. To prove the cow's insignificance, he clouded the mind of Dharani Devi, the Earth Mother, and drought spread across the land.

Crops failed. Yajnas stopped, because there was no ghee to offer. Human suffering grew — and the cows suffered with them. Bhagwan Vishnu then explained to Dharani Devi that without the cow, the balance of both earth and heaven collapses, for the cow is the root of dharma, of anna, and of contentment.

Indra understood his error. He came down, asked forgiveness of the cows and their calves, and vowed to honour them with worship every year. That vow is the origin of gau-vats puja.

Katha 2: King Devdani and the Calf in the Wheat

In the city of Suvarnapur ruled a king named Devdani, who kept a cow and a buffalo. His two queens were Sita and Geeta. Sita loved the cow and treated her as a friend; Geeta was devoted to the buffalo.

One day the buffalo, jealous, whispered to Geeta that Sita despised her and favoured the cow. Poisoned by the words, Geeta waited for her chance, killed the cow's calf and hid the body inside a heap of wheat grain.

That evening, as the king sat down to eat, blood and flesh began to rain from the sky, and his plate filled with filth. Terrified, he heard an akashvani: your queen has killed the cow's calf and hidden it in the wheat.

The king searched, found the calf, and he and Queen Sita fell before the grieving cow, begging forgiveness and worshipping her with full vidhi. Such was the truth of their prayer that the calf rose alive from the heap of wheat. From that day it was believed that whoever worships the cow and calf on this tithi will see every danger lifted from their children.

A gentler folk version tells of a daughter-in-law asked to cook gehunla (wheat), who by terrible accident cooks a calf of the same name — and the calf, too, returns to life when the mother prays. Both stories explain the same rule: on Bachh Baras, wheat is not eaten.

Bachh Baras Puja Vidhi: Step by Step

1. Morning sankalp. Rise early, bathe, wear clean or new clothes, and take the vow to keep the vrat for your children's long life and wellbeing.
2. Prepare the talaiya. In the courtyard or puja space, shape a small pond or step-well (talaiya / bawdi) from clean clay and cow dung. Decorate it with flowers and fill it with raw milk (buffalo or goat) and water.
3. Bathe and adorn the cow and calf. Wash a milk-giving cow and her calf, drape them with fresh cloth, place a flower garland on the calf, apply roli and chandan tilak on both foreheads, and decorate the horns.
4. Offer the arghya. In a copper vessel mix akshat, black sesame, gangajal, fragrance and flowers, and offer it while chanting:
   
   क्षीरोदार्णवसम्भूते सुरासुरनमस्कृते।
   सर्वदेवमये मातर्गृहाणार्घ्यं नमो नमः॥
5. Tie the mauli. Wrap a mauli (kalawa) around the cow's neck or horn as a mark of the sankalp.
6. Feed them. Offer soaked chana, moth, bajra and gur, along with fresh green fodder. Feeding is considered the true puja of this day.
7. Take the charan raj. Touch the dust from the cow's feet to your own forehead — an act of complete surrender.
8. Katha and aarti. Read or listen to the Bachh Baras katha, then perform aarti with a lit aarti thali. Break the vrat afterwards.

If you do not have access to a live cow — and many families in cities and abroad do not — place a picture or small idol of Gau Mata with her calf, or of Bal Krishna with a cow, and perform the entire vidhi before it. The sankalp is what carries the vrat, not the geography.

Bachh Baras Fasting Rules: What Is Allowed and What Is Not

The niyam of this vrat are unusually strict and unusually specific. Most first-time observers get caught out by the knife rule.

Is Bachh Baras 2026 on 7 or 8 September?
It is observed on Monday, 7 September 2026. The Dwadashi tithi starts at 5:03 PM that day and the puja is performed in Pradosh Kaal, after sunset — which is why the vrat is kept on the 7th even though the tithi runs into the 8th.

Why can't we use a knife on Bachh Baras?
Because the katha turns on a calf being cut and hidden. Refusing to use a blade for a full day is a household-level act of ahimsa and remembrance. Vegetables that can be snapped by hand, or sprouted grains, are cooked instead.

Can I keep this vrat if I have a daughter, not a son?
Yes. The vrat is traditionally described as being for the long life of sons, but in practice mothers today keep it for all their children. The sankalp is yours to make — say the names of your children when you take it.

What if there is no cow near my home?
Perform the entire vidhi before a picture or idol of Gau Mata with her calf, or of Bal Krishna with a cow. Afterwards, offer food or a donation to a nearby gaushala — that is considered to complete the puja in spirit.

Is Bachh Baras the same as the Govatsa Dwadashi before Diwali?
Same ritual, different month and region. The Bhadrapada one (7 September 2026) is Bachh Baras in North India; the Kartik one is Vasu Baras, celebrated in Maharashtra and Gujarat as the opening day of Diwali.

Can pregnant women or those unwell keep the nirjala fast?
No fast in Sanatan Dharma is meant to harm the body. A phalahar (fruit and water) vrat, or simply doing the gau puja and katha with full shraddha, is entirely acceptable. Bhaav matters more than severity.

A Prayer Made Twice Over

There is something quietly beautiful about a vrat where a woman fasts, and then feeds someone else. Bachh Baras asks for nothing dramatic — no elaborate havan, no long path. It asks you to put down the knife, skip the wheat, walk out at dusk, and place your hand on a calf's head.

The prayer being offered is made twice over: once for the calf, and once for your own child. On the evening of 7 September, that is enough.
