This is Santan Saptami, also called Muktabharan Saptami. In 2026 it falls on Friday, 18 September. Mothers keep it for the long life and protection of their children; couples without children keep it praying for santan sukh. Bhagwan Shiv and Mata Parvati are the deities of the day — the divine parents, asked to look after someone else's.

Santan Saptami 2026: Date & Tithi Timings

Santan Saptami is observed on the Saptami (7th tithi) of Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapada maas. Unlike most vrats, this one is deliberately a daytime puja — tradition places it in dopahar, the middle of the day.

Note the tight window. Because the tithi ends at 1:01 PM, the vidhi should not be pushed to the afternoon or evening on 18 September — finish before that time.

Why the Number Seven Runs Through This Vrat

Saptami is the seventh tithi, and the number stays with the ritual from beginning to end. Seven knots in the thread. Seven puas offered to the deities. Seven given away in daan. Seven eaten to break the fast. Some families also take seven parikrama around the chowki.

The repetition is the point. A mother's prayer for her child is not made once and set down — it is made again and again, in every form the day allows.

The Santan Dora: The Heart of the Vrat

If you remember only one thing about Santan Saptami, remember the dora.

A plain cotton thread is taken and seven knots are tied into it. It is then coloured with haldi or kesar until it turns deep yellow. This thread is placed before Shiv and Parvati during the puja, offered along with the rest of the samagri, and only afterwards tied by the mother onto her own wrist — not the child's.

That detail matters. The mother wears the protection so that it reaches the child. The dora is kept on until the next year's Santan Saptami, when it is replaced with a fresh one. Many families use a simple mauli (kalawa) for the dora and colour it with haldi ki ganth ground fresh at home.

Santan Saptami Vrat Katha

This katha was narrated by Bhagwan Shri Krishna to Yudhishthira.

In ancient Ayodhya ruled a king named Nahush, whose queen was Chandramukhi. In the same city lived a brahmin, Vishnudatt, whose wife was Rupavati. The queen and the brahmin's wife were close friends.

One day the two went together to bathe at the Sarayu. There they saw a group of women performing puja to Shiv and Parvati. Asked what they were doing, the women said they were keeping the vrat of Santan Saptami — for the wellbeing of their children. Moved, both the queen and Rupavati took a sankalp that they too would keep this vrat for the rest of their lives.

The vow that was forgotten

Rupavati went home and kept the vrat faithfully, year after year. Queen Chandramukhi returned to the affairs of the palace and forgot it entirely.

In time both women died. By the merit of the vrat, Rupavati was reborn as a brahmin woman named Ishwari, and was blessed with several strong, healthy sons. Chandramukhi, who had taken a sankalp and broken it, was reborn first as a monkey, and only in the birth after that returned to human form as Vimala, the wife of a king — but she remained without children.

Envy, and the thing that could not be harmed

By divine arrangement, Ishwari lived in that same city and came often to the palace. Queen Vimala watched Ishwari's sons grow up healthy and happy, and envy took hold of her. More than once she tried to have the boys harmed. Every attempt failed — the children of a mother who kept Santan Saptami could not be touched.

Defeated, the queen finally confessed and asked Ishwari how her sons stayed so protected. Ishwari reminded her of their previous birth, of the vow taken on the bank of the Sarayu and never kept. "You made a sankalp and did not honour it," she said. "That is why santan sukh has been withheld from you."

Queen Vimala then kept Santan Saptami with full vidhi, and asked forgiveness of Shiv and Parvati. By the power of the vrat, she too was blessed with a child.

The lesson the katha leaves behind is unusually direct: a sankalp taken and abandoned carries a weight of its own. Keep this vrat only if you intend to keep it every year.

Santan Saptami Puja Vidhi: Step by Step

1. Morning bath and sankalp. Rise early, bathe, wear clean clothes, and take the vow naming your children — or, if praying for santan, naming that wish plainly.
2. Set the chowki. Place a wooden chowki in the puja space, spread a clean red or yellow cloth, and install murtis or images of Bhagwan Shiv and Mata Parvati.
3. Shuddhi. Sprinkle gangajal over the chowki and the samagri.
4. Prepare the dora. Take a cotton thread, tie seven knots, and colour it with haldi or kesar. Keep it before the deities.
5. Shodashopachar puja. Offer roli, chandan, akshat, flowers, dhoop and a ghee diya to Shiv-Parvati.
6. Offer the seven puas. Place seven puas (sweet flatbread of gud and atta, fried in pure desi ghee) as naivedya, along with panchmeva.
7. Read the katha. Recite or listen to the Santan Saptami vrat katha in full — the vrat is considered incomplete without it.
8. Aarti. Perform aarti of Shiv and Parvati with an aarti thali.
9. Tie the dora. Take the blessed thread and tie it on your own wrist.
10. Daan and parana. Give seven puas to a brahmin or to someone in need, then break the fast with seven puas yourself.
