Onam 2026: Date, Mahabali & Vamana Story, Puja Vidhi

Once a year, on the day of Thiruvonam, a beloved king is said to return home to see whether his people are still happy, still equal, still free. This is the heart of Onam — Kerala's grandest festival, and one of the most cherished stories in all of Sanatan Dharma, celebrating the Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu. In 2026, the ten days of celebration begin very soon, making this the perfect week to understand the story and prepare your own small tribute at home, wherever you live.

⏰ Onam 2026 begins with Atham on Monday, August 17, and reaches its peak on Thiruvonam, Wednesday, August 26. The festivities span ten days across the Malayalam month of Chingam.

Date & the Ten-Day Onam Calendar 2026

Onam unfolds gradually, one nakshatra (lunar day) at a time, with the pookalam flower carpet at every home growing larger and more elaborate as the festival builds toward its climax. Here is the full sequence for 2026:

Day Nakshatra Date (2026)
Day 1 Atham (festival begins, flag hoisting) 17 August, Monday
Day 2 Chithira 18 August, Tuesday
Day 3 Chodhi 19 August, Wednesday
Day 4 Vishakam 20 August, Thursday
Day 5 Anizham 21 August, Friday
Day 6 Thrikketta 22 August, Saturday
Day 7 Moolam 23 August, Sunday
Day 8 Pooradam 24 August, Monday
Day 9 Uthradam (First Onam / Onathappan installed) 25 August, Tuesday
Day 10 Thiruvonam (main day) 26 August, Wednesday

Kerala households traditionally treat Uthradam as "First Onam" — the day the sacred Onathappan (Thrikkakara Appan) idol is installed — and Thiruvonam as the grand finale with family gatherings, new clothes, and the Onasadya feast.

The Story of King Mahabali and the Vamana Avatar

Onam's soul lies in one of the most moving stories of devotion and humility in Sanatan Dharma. Mahabali, grandson of the devoted Prahlada, was an Asura king whose rule over Kerala was so just, so prosperous, and so equal that his subjects wanted for nothing — there was no poverty, no lies, no theft. His people loved him so deeply that even the Devas grew uneasy at his growing power and glory.

The Devas approached Lord Vishnu, who took the form of Vamana — a small Brahmin boy — and visited Mahabali's court asking for a modest gift: just three paces of land, measured by his own small feet. The generous king, true to his word and his dharma, agreed without hesitation, ignoring his guru Shukracharya's warning that this humble visitor was no ordinary boy.

Vamana then grew to a cosmic form. With his first step, he covered the entire earth. With his second, he covered the heavens. When there was nowhere left for the third step, Mahabali — refusing to break his word — bowed his own head for Vishnu to place his foot upon, offering himself completely. Moved by this ultimate act of surrender and integrity, Vishnu pushed him gently down to Patala (the netherworld) to rule there, but granted him a boon: once every year, on the day of Thiruvonam, Mahabali could return to visit the land and people he loved.

This is why, every Onam, Kerala doesn't just celebrate a harvest — it welcomes a king home. Every pookalam, every lamp, every dish of the Onasadya is really a way of saying: Look, Mahabali, we are still happy, we are still one family.

How Onam Is Celebrated

Pookalam — the flower carpet

Every morning from Atham onward, families lay out a pookalam — a circular carpet of fresh flower petals — at the entrance of the home, adding a new ring and new colours each day until it reaches its fullest, most elaborate form by Thiruvonam. A sprig of tulsi is traditionally placed at its centre, and women mark the start of the pookalam with a joyful ululation (kurava).

Onathappan / Thrikkakara Appan puja

At the centre of the pookalam, a small clay or mud pyramid representing Vamana and Mahabali together — called Onathappan or Thrikkakara Appan — is installed on Uthradam and worshipped daily through Thiruvonam with flowers, akshat, and a lit diya. The only temple in the world dedicated specifically to the Vamana avatar, Thrikkakara Vamana Temple near Kochi, holds special Kodiyettu (flag hoisting) and Chaarthu ceremonies through these ten days, drawing devotees from across Kerala.

Onasadya, Vallamkali and Pulikali

Thiruvonam culminates in the Onasadya — an elaborate vegetarian feast of over twenty dishes served on a banana leaf, eaten together as a family. Many regions also host Vallamkali (snake boat races) and Pulikali (tiger dance) as part of the wider community celebrations, expressing the same spirit of togetherness and abundance that Mahabali's reign once represented.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Onam only celebrated in Kerala?
Onam originated in Kerala and remains its most important festival, but Malayali communities across India and the diaspora — and many others who admire the story of Mahabali — mark the day with a small puja, a meal, or a pookalam of their own.

Why is Onam called a harvest festival if it's about a king's return?
Both ideas sit together naturally: Onam falls at the end of the Kerala harvest season, and the abundance of the harvest is itself seen as proof that Mahabali's just, prosperous rule is remembered and honoured every year.

What is Onathappan or Thrikkakara Appan?
It is a small clay or mud pyramid, usually three or four tiers, representing Vamana and Mahabali together. It is installed at the centre of the pookalam on Uthradam and worshipped daily until Thiruvonam.

Do people fast during Onam?
No — unlike many vrats, Onam is a celebratory festival built around feasting, family, and community, most famously the elaborate Onasadya on Thiruvonam.

What is the significance of the pookalam design?
The pookalam is both an offering of beauty to welcome Mahabali home and a daily act of devotion — the design grows larger and more colourful each day, mirroring the ten-day build-up of the festival itself.

Which temple is most associated with Onam?
The Thrikkakara Vamana Temple near Kochi is the only temple dedicated specifically to the Vamana avatar and is considered the spiritual home of the Onam festival, hosting special ceremonies throughout the ten days.
