Every year, in the quiet weeks after Raksha Bandhan, when the monsoon has soaked the fields and the neem trees stand green and heavy, married women across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan keep one of the most beautiful and least understood vrats of the Hindu year — Kajari Teej.

It is the third and final Teej of the monsoon trilogy. Hariyali Teej celebrates the reunion of Shiva and Parvati. Hartalika Teej celebrates Parvati's fierce resolve. Kajari Teej — also called Kajali Teej, Kajri Teej, Badi Teej or Satudi Teej — is the one that celebrates endurance: the woman who fasts all day without water, worships a living neem branch as the Mother herself, and breaks her fast only after the moon has risen and received her arghya.

If you have seen "30 August" circulating on WhatsApp, here is why the confusion exists — and why 31 August is correct for almost every household.

Why 31 August and not 30 August? Tritiya tithi is present at sunrise on 31 August (it only ends at 8:50 AM that morning), and Hindu vrats that involve a full-day fast are anchored to the tithi that touches sunrise. Some Rajasthani households that begin the ritual on the previous evening will start preparations on 30 August, but the fast, the katha and the moon arghya all belong to 31 August.

One more thing worth noting: in 2026, Kajari Teej falls on a Monday — Shiva's own day. A Teej dedicated to Gauri and Shankar falling on Somvar is considered especially fruitful, and many women who have been keeping Sawan Somvar vrats treat this as a natural continuation.

The Meaning Behind the Name

"Kajari" comes from kajal — the deep black of the monsoon rain clouds. In the villages of Mirzapur, Varanasi and Bundelkhand, women gather on this night to sing Kajari, a folk song form that has existed for centuries. The songs are about longing: a young wife singing for a husband who has travelled far, the dark clouds gathering, the peacocks calling.

The festival is also called Satudi Teej, from sattu — roasted gram flour mixed with ghee and sugar, the prasad without which the vrat is considered incomplete. In Rajasthan it is simply Badi Teej — the "big" Teej — because it is grander in observance than Hariyali Teej which precedes it.

Significance: Why Women Keep This Vrat

Kajari Teej is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. The prayers are simple and ancient:

• Married women fast for the long life, health and prosperity of their husband, and for harmony in the marriage.
• Unmarried women keep it praying for a suitable, loving life partner — the same wish Parvati herself carried when she performed her legendary tapasya for Shiva.
• Mothers in many families extend the sankalp to the wellbeing of their children.

What sets Kajari Teej apart from other vrats is its object of worship. Parvati is not invoked into a metal idol here. She is invoked into a neem branch planted in a small clay pond — worshipped as Neemdi Mata. The neem tree, bitter and medicinal, is the symbol of a mother's love: it protects, it purifies, and it asks nothing in return. In an agrarian tradition that lived through monsoon fevers and epidemics, worshipping the neem at the peak of the rains was both devotion and deep practical wisdom.

Kajari Teej Vrat Katha

The vrat is considered incomplete without hearing the katha. This is the most widely told version.

In a small village there lived a poor Brahmin and his wife. They had nothing — no land, no grain, no savings. When Kajari Teej arrived, the wife told her husband, "Today is Teej. I must keep the vrat for your long life. But there is no sattu in the house, and without sattu the puja cannot be completed."

The Brahmin had no money to buy any. But he could not bear to see his wife's vrat go unfulfilled. That night he slipped into a merchant's shop, and took only what was needed — a small measure of gram flour, ghee and sugar. Nothing more. As he turned to leave, the shopkeeper woke and raised an alarm, and the household seized him.

Standing before them, the Brahmin did not deny it. He told them the truth: that he was a thief that night for one reason only — his wife was fasting without water for his own life, and he could not let her puja fail for want of a handful of sattu.

The merchant's family searched him and found exactly what he had described — nothing else taken, not a single coin. Moved by his honesty and by the devotion of a woman he had never met, the merchant not only released him but sent him home with sattu, ghee, sugar, cloth and grain, and declared that his own household would keep the Kajari Teej vrat from that day onward.

The Brahmin's wife completed her puja that night, offered arghya to the moon, and broke her fast. From that day, it is said, poverty never entered their home again.

The teaching of the katha is not about the theft. It is that Maa Parvati responds to sincerity, not to the value of what is offered. A neem leaf given with a full heart reaches her; gold given carelessly does not.

Kajari Teej Puja Vidhi: Step by Step

1. Morning — Snan and Sankalp

Wake before sunrise, bathe, and wear clean traditional clothes — red, green or yellow, the colours of a suhagan. Sprinkle Gangajal in the puja space. Take the sankalp aloud: state your name, gotra, and the intention of the vrat (long life of your husband, or a suitable partner if unmarried).

2. Establish Neemdi Mata

Take a wide clay or steel plate and build a small circular boundary of clay to resemble a pond (talab). Fill it with clean water mixed with a little milk. Plant a fresh neem branch upright in the centre — this is Neemdi Mata, Parvati herself. Place a lit diya beside it.

3. Offer the Shringar

Offer roli, akshat, chandan, flowers, mehendi, kajal, bangles, sindoor and a small piece of cloth to Neemdi Mata. In many families a separate solah shringar offering is made to the Gauri idol or image kept alongside. This is the emotional centre of the vrat — every item offered is a prayer for your own suhaag to remain unbroken.

4. Shiva–Parvati Puja

Alongside the neem, worship Shiva and Parvati (an idol, a photo, or clay figures made by hand, exactly as in the katha). Offer water, bel patra, chandan tilak, flowers and dhoop. Chant Om Namah Shivaya and Om Umayai Namah 108 times if you can.

5. Bhog and Katha

Offer sattu mixed with ghee and sugar, along with seasonal fruit, cucumber, lemon and sweets. Then sit and listen to (or read aloud) the Kajari Teej vrat katha. Traditionally the women of the household gather for this together.

6. Evening Aarti

Perform aarti with a ghee diya and camphor during Pradosh Kaal. Sing the Gauri aarti and, if your family follows the tradition, the Kajari folk songs.

7. Chandra Arghya and Parana

Wait for moonrise. Offer arghya — pour water mixed with milk, roli and akshat towards the moon from a copper vessel, three times. Only after this arghya may you drink water and break the fast, first with sattu prasad.

Where Kajari Teej Is Celebrated

Bundi, Rajasthan holds the most famous public celebration — the Kajli Teej Mela, where an idol of Teej Mata is carried in procession through the old city with camels, elephants, folk dancers and fireworks, drawing visitors from across the state.

Mirzapur and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh are the historic heartland of the Kajari song tradition, where women's singing gatherings still take place on this night.

What if I cannot keep a nirjala fast?
Keep a phalahar vrat with fruit, milk and water. Shastra explicitly permits relaxation for the elderly, the unwell, and pregnant or nursing women. The sankalp and the sincerity matter far more than the severity.

What if the moon is not visible because of clouds?
This is common at the end of monsoon. Offer arghya at the calculated moonrise time for your city, facing east where the moon would be. The vrat is complete.

Can I keep this vrat if I live abroad?
Yes. Follow the tithi as per Indian panchang for the sankalp, but use your local sunrise and moonrise times for the fast and arghya. If a fresh neem branch is unavailable, many families abroad use a tulsi plant or a photograph of Gauri Mata with a sankalp of substitution.
