Bhadrapada Maas 2026: Start Date, Festival Calendar, Niyam & What to Avoid

Sawan has just ended. The kanwariyas have gone home, the last Somvar jal has been offered, and the Shivling in your home mandir is quiet again. For many devotees this feels like the end of the festive season — but in truth, the most crowded month of the entire Hindu year is about to begin.

Bhadrapada — called Bhado, Bhadon or Bhadrav across North India — is the sixth month of the Hindu lunar calendar and the second of the four sacred Chaturmas months. Between the day it starts and the day it ends, you will observe Kajari Teej, Sankashti Chaturthi, Krishna Janmashtami, Aja Ekadashi, Hartalika Teej, Ganesh Chaturthi, Rishi Panchami, Radha Ashtami and Anant Chaturdashi. It ends by handing you straight over to Pitru Paksha.

This is the month our elders called bhakti ka mahina — and it comes with its own set of rules about what to eat, what to avoid, and what simply should not be started. Here is your complete guide.

⏰ Bhadrapada Maas 2026 begins Saturday, 29 August 2026 and ends Saturday, 26 September 2026 (North Indian Purnimanta calendar). If you follow the Amanta calendar of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana or Andhra Pradesh, Bhadrapada runs from 12 September to 10 October 2026.

Bhadrapada 2026: Dates Across Calendars

Hindus in different regions count lunar months differently — the Purnimanta calendar ends a month at Purnima, while the Amanta calendar ends it at Amavasya. Both are correct; the festivals still fall on the same days. Only the month label shifts.

Calendar System Followed In Bhadrapada 2026 Period
Purnimanta UP, Bihar, Delhi, MP, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Punjab 29 August – 26 September 2026
Amanta Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu 12 September – 10 October 2026
Bengali (Bhadra) West Bengal, Assam, Tripura 18 August – 17 September 2026

Why Bhadrapada Is So Sacred

It is the second month of Chaturmas

Chaturmas 2026 began on Devshayani Ekadashi in July and continues until Dev Uthani Ekadashi in November. During these four months, tradition holds that Lord Vishnu enters yog nidra — a cosmic sleep in Kshir Sagar — after granting King Bali his boon. With the preserver at rest, the responsibility of the world's spiritual balance falls to the devotee's own discipline. This is precisely why Chaturmas months carry so many rules of restraint.

It is the month most beloved of Shri Krishna

Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami is the tithi on which Bhagwan Krishna took birth in Mathura's prison at midnight. No other month can claim the Lord's own janma. Radha Rani's appearance day, Radha Ashtami, follows just fifteen days later in the Shukla Paksha. For Vaishnav families, the entire month is a continuous Krishna utsav.

It belongs to Ganpati Bappa as well

Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi is Ganesh Chaturthi — the day Gauri Putra Ganesha was installed in homes and pandals across India. The ten-day Ganeshotsav that follows is the single largest public festival of the Hindu year, closing with Anant Chaturdashi and visarjan.

Shiva, Krishna and Ganesha are all worshipped in this one month. That combination is unique to Bhadrapada.

Note on Hartalika Teej: Tritiya tithi ends early on the morning of 14 September 2026, which places Hartalika Teej on 14 September by the udaya-tithi rule followed in most North Indian panchangs. Some regional panchangs observe it on 13 September. Follow the panchang your family has always followed — both are shastra-sammat.

Bhadrapada Niyam: What to Do This Month

  • Snan before sunrise. Bathing in the early hours of Bhadrapada is considered especially punya-giving. Add a few drops of Gangajal to your bathing water if a river bath is not possible.
  • Worship Krishna, Shiva and Ganesha together. A simple daily offering of water, akshat, chandan and a lit deepak before all three is enough.
  • Chant daily. "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" for Krishna, "Om Gan Ganapataye Namah" for Ganesha, and the Panchakshari "Om Namah Shivaya" — 108 times each, or as many as your day permits.
  • Do daan. Donating curd, milk, ghee, grain, or an umbrella during Bhadrapada is traditionally regarded as highly meritorious.
  • Read the Bhagavad Gita or Srimad Bhagavatam, particularly the Dashama Skandha describing Krishna's leelas.
  • Keep a clean, undisturbed mandir. With this many vrat days in a single month, a well-stocked puja space saves you scrambling on the morning of a festival.

Bhadrapada Mein Kya Na Karein: What to Avoid

Foods traditionally avoided

Avoid Traditional Reason
Dahi (curd) Its cooling nature is said to aggravate kapha in peak monsoon; the classic Chaturmas restriction for Bhadrapada
Gud (jaggery) Believed to cause throat and phlegm complaints in this season
Coconut oil in food Said to diminish sukh and comfort
Til (sesame) oil in food Traditionally held to reduce longevity when consumed this month
Raw and uncooked foods Monsoon contamination — the most practical of all these rules
Leafy greens, brinjal Common Chaturmas restriction across regions

What you can eat freely: milk, paneer, chhaas (well-churned buttermilk), rice, moong dal, ghee, cooked seasonal vegetables and fresh fruit.

Activities traditionally postponed

  • Marriage, engagement and mundan ceremonies — all Chaturmas months are considered inauspicious for vivah muhurat
  • Griha Pravesh into a new home
  • Laying a building foundation or beginning major construction
  • Buying a new vehicle or property, unless a pandit has cleared a specific muhurat
  • Anger, harsh speech, gossip and tamasic food — the inner restraints matter as much as the outer ones

Daily Puja Vidhi for Bhadrapada

You do not need an elaborate ritual every day. This ten-minute vidhi is enough to carry the whole month:

  1. Wake before sunrise, bathe, and wear clean clothes.
  2. Clean the mandir and sprinkle Gangajal over the puja area to purify it.
  3. Light a desi ghee deepak and a stick of dhoop or a piece of kapoor.
  4. Offer water, then apply chandan and roli tilak to the deities.
  5. Offer akshat, fresh flowers, and durva grass to Ganesha; tulsi patra to Krishna.
  6. Offer bhog — panchmeva, makhan-mishri, or any simple sattvic prasad.
  7. Chant your mantra, then perform aarti with the lit deepak.
  8. Close with a short sankalp for your family's wellbeing and distribute the prasad.

Preparing for the Two Big Days

Two festivals in Bhadrapada demand real preparation — Krishna Janmashtami on 4 September, with its midnight Nishita Kaal puja and next-day parana, and Ganesh Chaturthi on 14 September, with murti sthapana, ten days of daily seva, and visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi. Both have specific muhurats that change every year and vidhis that are easy to get wrong.

Our bilingual Hindi + English eBooks give you the exact 2026 muhurat, step-by-step vidhi, full katha and aarti for each — so nothing is left to guesswork on the day itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does Bhadrapada month start and end in 2026?
In the North Indian Purnimanta calendar, Bhadrapada 2026 runs from 29 August to 26 September. In the Amanta calendar followed in Maharashtra, Gujarat and South India, it runs from 12 September to 10 October 2026.

Why is curd not eaten in Bhadrapada?
Bhadrapada falls at the height of the monsoon, when digestion is naturally weak and dairy spoils quickly. Ayurveda regards curd as heavy and kapha-increasing in this season. The scriptural restriction and the practical health reason point the same way.

Can marriages take place in Bhadrapada?
No shubh vivah muhurats are given during Chaturmas, and Bhadrapada is among the strictest of the four months. Weddings, engagements and griha pravesh are traditionally postponed until after Dev Uthani Ekadashi in November.

Which god is worshipped in Bhadrapada?
Uniquely, three. Shri Krishna — whose birth falls in this month; Ganesha — whose ten-day festival dominates the Shukla Paksha; and Lord Shiva, worshipped through Hartalika Teej, Pradosh and Masik Shivaratri.

How many Ekadashis fall in Bhadrapada 2026?
Two — Aja Ekadashi on 7 September in the Krishna Paksha, and Parivartini (Parsva) Ekadashi on 22 September in the Shukla Paksha. Parivartini is the day Lord Vishnu is said to turn over in his cosmic sleep.

What happens immediately after Bhadrapada ends?
Bhadrapada Purnima on 26 September 2026 marks the start of Pitru Paksha — the fortnight of shraddh and tarpan for ancestors, which continues until Sarva Pitru Amavasya in October.

A Month to Slow Down and Turn Inward

Bhadrapada asks something a little different from Sawan. Sawan was about intensity — the jal, the yatra, the Mondays. Bhadrapada is about steadiness. Wake early. Eat simply. Do not start what should wait. Sit before your deities each morning even when there is no festival on the calendar, and let the month's many vrats find you already prepared.

That is what our grandmothers meant when they called Bhado bhakti ka mahina — not the month of the biggest puja, but the month of the most consistent one.
