Santoshi Mata Vrat Vidhi — Step by Step
Step 1: Wake Early and Bathe
On Friday morning, wake before sunrise, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. Yellow is the auspicious colour for Santoshi Mata.
Step 2: Set Up the Puja Sthal
Place a picture or idol of Santoshi Mata on a clean red cloth. Arrange the samagri around it.
Step 3: Take the Sankalp
Take a sankalp (intention) — state why you are observing this vrat and what wish or desire you are bringing to Santoshi Mata with devotion.
Step 4: Offer Jaggery and Roasted Chana
This is the most essential offering. Jaggery (gud) and roasted chickpeas (chana) are Santoshi Mata's prasad. Offer them with full devotion.
Step 5: Offer Flowers, Roli, and Akshat
Apply Roli tilak on the idol. Offer yellow flowers and Akshat. Light the diya with Desi Ghee.
Step 6: Read the Santoshi Mata Vrat Katha
The Vrat Katha must be read or heard on every Friday fast. The katha tells the story of Satyavati — a devoted woman whose sincere Friday fasting brought her husband home from bondage, restored family prosperity, and granted her every wish.

Important Rules of Santoshi Mata Vrat
- ⚠️ No sour food on vrat days — this is the most important rule. Even a small amount of sour food breaks the vrat's power.
- The vrat is typically observed for 16 consecutive Fridays (some traditions say 21 Fridays)
- After completing the vrat, a Udyapan (conclusion puja) is performed where you invite 8 boys for a feast and offer them jaggery-chana prasad
- Family members must also avoid sour food on the vrat day
The Santoshi Mata Vrat Katha — Story of Satyavati
Satyavati was a devoted woman whose husband Birju was poor and owed debts. Her in-laws mistreated her constantly. She began observing the Shukrawar Vrat sincerely. Santoshi Mata was pleased by her devotion and intervened to free her husband from bondage, brought him wealth, and granted the couple a prosperous, happy life. The katha teaches that Santoshi Mata rewards sincere devotion with complete satisfaction in all areas of life.
