Ekadashi Vrat Kaise Karein 2026 – Complete Guide (Vidhi, Rules & Significance)

Ekadashi Vrat Kaise Karein 2026 – Complete Guide (Vidhi, Rules & Significance)

Ekadashi is one of the most powerful and widely observed fasts in Sanatana Dharma. Observed on the 11th day (Ekadashi) of both the waxing and waning moon cycles, it occurs twice every month — 24 times a year. Of all the vrats in the Hindu calendar, Ekadashi is considered the most meritorious and spiritually transformative.

Whether you are new to Ekadashi or have been observing it for years, this complete guide covers everything — the correct vidhi, what to eat, what to avoid, the significance, and the most common mistakes people make.

What is Ekadashi and Why is it Observed?

The word Ekadashi comes from Sanskrit — eka (one) + dashi (ten) = the eleventh. Ekadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Narayan). According to the Padma Purana and other scriptures, fasting on Ekadashi removes the sins of previous lifetimes, purifies the mind and body, and brings one closer to moksha (liberation).

Ekadashi 2026 — Key Dates

  • Nirjala Ekadashi (June) — the most powerful of all 24, observed as a complete waterless fast
  • Devshayani Ekadashi (July) — marks the beginning of Chaturmas
  • Devutthana Ekadashi (November) — Lord Vishnu awakens from his cosmic sleep
  • Vaikuntha Ekadashi (December/January) — believed to open the gates of Vaikuntha

Ekadashi Vrat Vidhi — Step by Step

The Night Before

Eat a light Satvik meal on Dashami. Avoid meat, onion, garlic. Wake before sunrise on Ekadashi.

Step 1: Sankalp

Take a formal sankalp before Lord Vishnu. Hold water in your right palm and state your intention for the fast.

Step 2: The Fast

Most devotees observe Phalahar Ekadashi — fruits, milk, curd, nuts, and sendha namak only. Strictly no grains — this is the most important rule.

Step 3: Vishnu Puja

Offer Tulsi leaves (most essential), yellow flowers, Akshat, Chandan, and Panchamrit. Chant "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya".

Step 4: Read the Ekadashi Katha

Every Ekadashi has its own Katha — it must be read or heard. Reading the katha is as important as the fast itself.

Step 5: Break the Fast on Dwadashi

Break the fast after sunrise on the 12th day. Never sleep during the day on Dwadashi.

Most Common Mistakes on Ekadashi

  • ❌ Eating rice or any grain — nullifies the fast
  • ❌ Sleeping during the day on Ekadashi
  • ❌ Eating onion or garlic
  • ❌ Skipping the sankalp or the katha

Frequently Asked Questions

Can diabetics or sick people observe Ekadashi?

Yes — eat fruits and milk instead of grains. The intention and devotion matter most.

What is the difference between Ekadashi and Nirjala Ekadashi?

Every Ekadashi allows fruits and milk. Nirjala Ekadashi — observed once a year in Jyeshtha — is a complete fast with no water or food. It carries the merit of all 24 Ekadashis combined.

Jai Shri Hari. May Lord Vishnu bless you with health, prosperity, and liberation. 🕊️
