New Car Puja Vidhi: Vaahan Puja Guide with Samagri List
Bringing home a new vehicle is one of life's most joyful milestones — and in the Sanatan tradition, we begin every new journey by seeking the blessings of God. Vahan Puja, or New Car Puja, is the sacred ritual that invites divine protection for your vehicle, its passengers, and every road you travel. Whether you perform it at home or at a temple, this guide walks you through every step of the vidhi with complete samagri details.
What is Vahan Puja (New Car Puja)?
Vahan Puja is a traditional Hindu ritual performed before a new vehicle — car, bike, truck, or any automobile — takes its first journey. "Vahan" means vehicle, and the puja is an expression of gratitude to God and a prayer for safety. Rooted in the belief that a new possession should be consecrated before use, the ritual invokes Lord Ganesha (remover of obstacles), Goddess Lakshmi (for prosperity), and the deity of the vehicle itself. The puja purifies the vehicle's energy, removes any Vastu doshas associated with the space, and ensures the vehicle serves its purpose safely for years to come.
Vahan Puja Muhurat — Auspicious Timing
Choosing the right muhurat significantly amplifies the benefits of Vahan Puja. The most auspicious days are:
- Tuesday (Mangalwar) — ruled by Mars, associated with courage and vehicles
- Thursday (Brihaspatiwar) — ruled by Jupiter, brings prosperity and good fortune
- Saturday (Shaniwar) — especially good for commercial vehicles
- Dashami, Purnima, or Pratipada tithis — highly auspicious lunar days
Avoid performing Vahan Puja on Amavasya (no moon night), during Rahu Kaal, or when the moon is in an inauspicious nakshatra. Step-by-Step Vahan Puja Vidhi
This vidhi is suitable for performing at home or at a dealer showroom before your first drive.
Step 1: Preparation — Clean the Vehicle & Set the Puja Space
Wash the vehicle thoroughly and wipe it dry. Place a fresh red or yellow cloth on the car's bonnet. Arrange your puja items on a clean tray or Aarti Thali (₹299).
Step 2: Sankalp — Setting Intention
Face east, take water in your right palm, and recite your name, gotra, and the purpose of the puja — asking for divine blessings and safe travel. Pour the water on the ground as an offering.
Step 3: Ganesh Puja — Invoking the Remover of Obstacles
Begin all auspicious works with Ganesh Puja. Apply Roli (₹45) and Akshat (₹49) on a Ganesh idol or image. Offer a flower and recite "Om Gan Ganapataye Namah" 21 times.
Step 4: Kalash Sthapana
Fill a Copper Kalash (₹599) with water and a few drops of Gangajal (₹59). Place mango leaves and a coconut on top. Tie a Mauli thread (₹29) around its neck. This Kalash represents divine presence throughout the puja.
Step 5: Puja of the Vehicle's Engine & Bonnet
Open the bonnet. Apply Roli and Akshat on the engine block. Offer a flower and a small coconut to the vehicle's "heart." Sprinkle Gangajal around and inside the vehicle, including the boot. This purifies the vehicle's energy.
Step 6: Tying Mauli on the Steering Wheel
Tie a fresh Mauli (red-yellow sacred thread, ₹29) around the steering wheel while chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" or any ishta mantra. This is a protective shield for the driver.
Step 7: Aarti
Light a diya using Pure Desi Ghee (₹179) and perform aarti of the vehicle by moving the thali in a clockwise direction around the front, back, and both sides. Light Bhimseni Kapoor (₹149) for purification.
Step 8: The First Drive Ritual
Break a coconut in front of the vehicle's right front tyre. Drive forward — never reverse first. Ideally, visit a temple for the first journey. Distribute sweets as prasad to everyone present.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can we perform Vahan Puja ourselves without a pandit?
Yes, absolutely. Vahan Puja can be performed by the vehicle owner or any family elder who knows the basic steps. The most important elements are a clean setup, sincere intention (sankalp), Ganesh invocation, applying roli-akshat to the vehicle, tying mauli, performing aarti, and the coconut-breaking ritual. If you'd prefer expert guidance, our Online New Car Pooja service (₹2,100) includes a certified priest who guides you through every step via video call.
What is the best day of the week for Vahan Puja?
Tuesday is traditionally the most auspicious day for Vahan Puja as it is ruled by Mars (Mangal), which governs vehicles, courage, and motion. Thursday is also excellent. Avoid Saturdays if you are purchasing a new vehicle for the first time, though Saturdays are considered good for maintenance purposes. For a custom recommendation based on your Kundali, try our Kundali Analysis (₹499).
Do I need to go to a temple for Vahan Puja?
A temple visit is ideal but not mandatory. Many people perform Vahan Puja at home or at the dealership before driving the car home for the first time. The key is that the puja happens before the vehicle's first journey. Some families also drive to a local Ganesh temple and perform a quick aarti there as the first destination.
Can Vahan Puja be performed for a second-hand car?
Yes, and it is highly recommended. A used vehicle carries the energy of previous owners and roads. A thorough Vahan Puja — including Gangajal sprinkling inside and outside, and fresh mauli on the steering wheel — clears that energy and re-consecrates the vehicle for you. Some families also recommend a brief Vastu consultation for used vehicles.
What mantra should be chanted during Vahan Puja?
The primary mantra is "Om Gan Ganapataye Namah" for Ganesh. Additionally, "Om Namah Shivaya" during mauli tying and "Jai Mata Di" or your family ishta mantra during aarti are appropriate. If you follow a specific deity, their beej mantra can be chanted throughout.
What should we do if we miss the ideal muhurat?
While a good muhurat enhances the ritual, divine blessings are never withheld from a sincere heart. If you miss the ideal date, perform the puja on the next available auspicious day. You can also get a revised muhurat from our Kundali Analysis service (₹499).
What should the first journey after Vahan Puja be?
The first journey should ideally be to a temple — preferably a Ganesh temple or your family deity's shrine. Drive forward (never reverse first) and drive slowly and mindfully. Avoid the first drive being for an errand or commercial purpose if possible.
