Kokila Vrat 2026: Date, Puja Vidhi, Katha & Significance
As the sacred month of Ashadha draws to a close and the monsoon clouds gather over India, married women across the country prepare their hearts for one of the most tender vrats in the Sanatan tradition — Kokila Vrat. Named after the kokila (the koel or Indian cuckoo), whose longing call fills the rain-washed forests, this vrat is a story of separation, penance, and the ultimate reunion of Goddess Parvati with Lord Shiva. It is observed for marital harmony, the long life of one's husband, and — for the unmarried — the blessing of a worthy life partner.
In 2026, Kokila Vrat falls at the very end of Ashadha, just before the holiest month of Sawan begins. If you have been meaning to invite the grace of Shiva and Parvati into your home this monsoon, this is a beautiful and auspicious day to begin.
Kokila Vrat 2026 — Date & Timings
Kokila Vrat is observed on Ashadha Shukla Purnima, when the full-moon tithi prevails through the evening. Because the Purnima night falls on 28 July in 2026, the vrat and its Pradosh-Kaal puja are observed that evening. The Snana-Daan Purnima and Guru (Vyasa) Purnima are marked the following morning, 29 July, by the sunrise (Udaya) tithi.
| Event | Date & Time (IST) |
|---|---|
| Kokila Vrat | Tuesday, 28 July 2026 |
| Purnima Tithi Begins | 6:18 PM, 28 July 2026 |
| Purnima Tithi Ends | 8:05 PM, 29 July 2026 |
| Pradosh Kaal Puja (evening worship) | ~7:15 PM – 9:20 PM, 28 July 2026 |
| Ashadha / Guru (Vyasa) Purnima | Wednesday, 29 July 2026 |
Timings are calculated for New Delhi and may shift by a few minutes depending on your city's sunrise and moonrise. Always confirm with your local panchang.
The Story & Significance of Kokila Vrat
The soul of this vrat lies in a poignant tale from the Puranas. In her earlier birth, Goddess Parvati was Sati, the daughter of Daksha Prajapati. Against her father's wishes, she had given her heart to Lord Shiva. When Daksha organised a grand yajna and deliberately did not invite Shiva, Sati wished to attend. Lord Shiva counselled her against going where she and her husband were unwelcome — but Sati, unable to bear the separation from her family, went anyway.
At the yajna she was gravely insulted, and unable to endure the dishonour shown to her beloved Shiva, she gave up her body in the sacrificial fire. As the tradition holds, for having gone against Shiva's word, Sati had to undertake a long penance: she took the form of a kokila and wandered the forests for thousands of years, her plaintive song echoing her longing to be reunited with her Lord. Only after this immense tapasya was she reborn as Parvati and, at last, reunited with Shiva as His eternal consort.
This is why the koel's monsoon call is so dear to devotees — it is remembered as the voice of the Goddess yearning for union. By observing Kokila Vrat on Ashadha Purnima, women honour that devotion and pray for an unbroken, loving bond in their own married lives.
What Blessings Does Kokila Vrat Grant?
Married women observe the fast praying to remain Akhand Saubhagyavati — blessed with a long and happy married life beside their husband. Unmarried girls keep the vrat to be blessed with a virtuous, devoted, and compatible partner, just as Parvati won Shiva through her steadfast penance. Devotees also seek domestic peace, harmony between husband and wife, and the removal of obstacles that trouble a marriage.
Kokila Vrat Puja Vidhi — How to Observe
The vrat blends simplicity with deep devotion. Here is the traditional way to observe it:
- Rise during the Brahma Muhurta (before dawn), bathe, and wear clean, preferably auspicious clothes.
- Take a sankalp (vow) to observe the vrat with a sincere heart, seeking the blessings of Shiva and Parvati for your married life or future partner.
- Prepare a small image or idol of the kokila (cuckoo) — many devotees shape one from clay or turmeric — which represents Goddess Parvati.
- Cleanse the puja space and sprinkle Gangajal to purify it. Place the kokila idol on a clean platform.
- Worship the kokila with haldi (turmeric), chandan (sandalwood), roli, akshat (rice) and flowers, offering each with devotion.
- Light a pure desi ghee diya and incense. Offer seasonal fruits and prepared prasad (bhog).
- Recite the Kokila Vrat Katha, sing bhajans and aarti in praise of Shiva and Parvati, and meditate on their divine union.
- The most important worship is done in the Pradosh Kaal (twilight) on the Purnima evening. Conclude by praying for the wellbeing of your husband and family.
Fasting Rules for Kokila Vrat
| Rule | Details |
|---|---|
| Type of fast | Nirjala (without water) is ideal for the devout; a phalahar (fruit & milk) fast is a gentler alternative. |
| Avoid | Grains, salt, onion, garlic and tamasic foods through the day. |
| Conduct | Keep the mind calm and pure; avoid anger, gossip and harsh speech. Spend the day in prayer and japa. |
| Breaking the fast | Complete the evening Pradosh puja first, then break the fast with sattvic prasad. |
Those who are unwell, pregnant, or unable to fast strictly may observe a simple phalahar vrat with equal devotion — the Goddess looks upon the sincerity of the heart, not the severity of the fast.
