Jal Jhulni Ekadashi 2026 procession carrying a decorated Vishnu utsava murti beside a Rajasthan temple water pavilion.

Jal Jhulni Ekadashi 2026: Date, Dola Gyaras Tradition & Vidhi

Across Rajasthan and parts of western India, Bhadrapada Shukla Ekadashi is not remembered only as a fasting day. Temple doors open to the sound of bells, a beautifully decorated form of Bhagwan Vishnu or Krishna is placed in a palanquin, and devotees walk together toward a nearby water body. This is Jal Jhulni Ekadashi, also called Dola Gyaras or Jal Jhilani Ekadashi.

In 2026, the observance falls on Tuesday, 22 September. It is the same lunar occasion widely known as Parivartini or Parsva Ekadashi, but the Jal Jhulni name draws attention to the regional temple procession and ceremonial water-side seva.

What Does “Jal Jhulni” Mean?

“Jal” means water, while “jhulni” evokes gentle movement or swinging. In regional practice, the temple’s utsava murti—the smaller form intended for processions—is placed in a decorated dola or palanquin and taken toward water. The journey may include kirtan, flowers, flags and community darshan.

Customs differ by temple. Some traditions perform symbolic bathing or water seva; others bring the palanquin near a kund, lake or ghat and conduct worship there. Devotees at home should not imitate a large temple immersion. A murti not designed for water should remain dry, secure and treated according to its care instructions.

Government documentation for the restoration plan around Rajasthan’s Charbhuja Nath temple records the movement of the deity’s rewāḍī or procession during the Jal Jhoolni festival. The observance is also associated with Udaipur’s Gangaur Ghat and other Vishnu temples across Rajasthan.

Why It Is Also Called Parivartini or Parsva Ekadashi

This Ekadashi falls during Chaturmas, the four-month devotional period associated with Bhagwan Vishnu’s yogic rest. Vaishnava tradition remembers this day as the occasion when Vishnu turns to another side—hence parsva, meaning side, and parivartini, meaning change or turning.

The image is devotional rather than a scientific description: it invites devotees to renew their own inner direction. A procession also makes this idea visible. The deity moves from the inner sanctum into the community, and worship moves from private prayer into shared seva.

How to Observe Jal Jhulni Ekadashi at Home

  1. Prepare on Dashami. Keep the evening meal simple according to family custom and gather the next day’s puja items.
  2. Take a morning sankalp. After bathing, sit before Vishnu or Krishna and state the form of fast you can safely observe.
  3. Offer simple puja. Use clean water, chandan, flowers, tulsi where customary, fruit and a lamp. A small amount of Chandan powder can be used for tilak.
  4. Read or hear the katha. Reflect on Bhagwan Vishnu during Chaturmas and the meaning of spiritual renewal.
  5. Create a symbolic dola. If your family already uses a small swing or palanquin for a suitable utsava murti, decorate it with flowers and move it only within a clean, stable puja space.
  6. Keep water symbolism safe. Place a clean bowl or kalash nearby as a symbol. Do not immerse painted, metal, electrical or fragile household idols.
  7. Sing together. Vishnu naam-japa or familiar bhajans can make a home observance communal without recreating a crowded procession.
  8. Perform parana correctly. Break the fast on Dwadashi within the locally applicable window, after prayer and according to your tradition.

Ekadashi Fasting Rules

Ekadashi practice ranges from avoiding grains and beans to fruit-and-milk fasting or a regular sattvik diet without prohibited ingredients. Nirjala fasting is not compulsory and should not be treated as a test of devotion. Choose a sustainable observance based on health, age, medication needs and guidance from your family or spiritual teacher.

Generally chosen Generally avoided
Fruit, milk, nuts and vrat-friendly preparations Rice, wheat and other grains
Water and simple drinks appropriate to the observer Beans, lentils, onion, garlic and intoxicants
Sendha namak where the household permits salt Ordinary table salt where the household avoids it

Ingredient rules can vary between sampradayas. Always distinguish food offered as bhog from food an individual plans to eat while fasting. For broader preparation, see our complete Ekadashi vrat guide.

Puja Samagri and Practical Preparation

  • Vishnu or Krishna image, or a safely supported utsava murti
  • Clean water and a small kalash
  • Flowers, tulsi leaves where traditionally offered, and fruit
  • Gangajal for customary purification, if desired
  • Pure desi ghee for an attended diya
  • Cloth and flowers for a symbolic dola

Keep flames attended, do not carry a heavy household murti through unsafe spaces, and do not enter a water body merely to reproduce a temple custom. The heart of the observance is Vishnu bhakti, restraint and community—not risk.

Temples and Places Associated With the Tradition

Charbhuja Nath at Garhbor is one of Rajasthan’s best-known settings for Jal Jhulni celebrations. Udaipur’s old-city ghats and Vishnu temples also preserve the regional identity of Dola Gyaras. Local programmes, procession routes and access rules change each year; check directly with the temple before travelling.

The following day, 23 September, is connected with Vamana Jayanti in 2026 in many calendars, reinforcing this period’s Vishnu focus.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is observed on Tuesday, 22 September 2026.

No. Devotees choose an appropriate Ekadashi observance. Grain-free, fruit-based and other family practices are common.

When is parana?
Parana is on Wednesday, 23 September 2026. The applicable window is location- and tradition-dependent, so confirm with your city panchang or temple.

A Procession of Inner Renewal

Jal Jhulni Ekadashi turns a subtle Chaturmas remembrance into a visible act of devotion. Whether you join a Rajasthan temple procession or offer a flower before Vishnu at home, let 22 September become a gentle turning of the heart toward steadiness, seva and remembrance.
