On the new moon night of Kartik Amavasya, the Goddess is believed to visit every home that is clean, illuminated, and waiting to receive her. Lakshmi Puja on Diwali night is a complete act of devotion that opens the door to abundance, prosperity, and divine grace for the entire year ahead. This guide gives you the complete 2026 muhurat, step-by-step vidhi, and a full samagri shopping list.

What is Diwali Lakshmi Puja?

Diwali Lakshmi Puja is the central ritual of the five-day Diwali festival, performed on the night of Kartik Amavasya (the darkest new moon of the Kartik month). Goddess Lakshmi — the deity of wealth, prosperity, beauty, and grace — is worshipped alongside Lord Ganesha (remover of obstacles) and Lord Kuber (deity of wealth and treasury). According to Vedic tradition, Goddess Lakshmi roams the earth on this night, entering homes that are clean, well-lit, and adorned with her welcome. The puja involves establishing a Kalash, performing Shodashopachara worship of Lakshmi, lighting diyas throughout the home, and keeping the doors open to welcome the Goddess in. Merchants and business owners also perform Lakshmi-Kuber Puja on this night, consecrating their account books (Chopda Puja) and cash boxes.

Step-by-Step Diwali Lakshmi Puja Vidhi

Step 1: Cleaning & Decorating the Home

Begin two days before Diwali (Dhanteras or Choti Diwali) with a thorough cleaning of the home. Clutter and dirt are considered obstacles to Lakshmi's entry. On the day of the puja, apply fresh rangoli at the entrance and place Lakshmi Feet Stickers (₹25) from the main door leading inward toward the puja space — these "charan paduka" represent the Goddess walking into your home.

Step 2: Kalash Sthapana

Place a Copper Kalash (₹599) filled with water and Gangajal (₹59) on a raised altar. Place five mango leaves in the mouth and a coconut on top. The Kalash represents Goddess Lakshmi's divine presence and must be established facing east.

Step 3: Ganesh Puja

All pujas begin with Ganesh worship. Apply Roli (₹45) and Akshat (₹49) to the Ganesh idol or image. Offer Durva, a modak, and chant "Om Gan Ganapataye Namah" 21 times.

Step 4: Lakshmi Puja — Shodashopachara

Place the Lakshmi idol or image at the centre of the altar. Offer all sixteen traditional upachars: seat (Asana), water for feet (Padya), water offering (Arghya), bath with Panchamrit, cloth (Vastra, symbolised by Lal Kapda), flowers (preferably pink lotus), incense, lamp, and food offerings. Offer Kamal Gatta (₹39) — lotus seeds — which are considered especially dear to Lakshmi. Arrange Kaudi/Cowrie Shells (₹99) and Gomti Chakra (₹99) on the altar as Lakshmi's sacred symbols. Chant the Lakshmi Ashtottara or "Om Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namah" 108 times.

Step 5: Naivedya — Sweet Offerings

Offer Batashe (₹49), Kheel (₹39), and Mishri (₹49) as Naivedya (food offering) to the Goddess. These traditional Diwali sweets are specifically associated with Lakshmi Puja.

Step 6: Kuber Puja

After the Lakshmi Puja, place your purse, cash box, or account book near the altar and perform a brief Kuber Puja. Lord Kuber, the treasurer of the gods, is invoked to protect and multiply your wealth. Chant: "Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Shreem Kleem Vitteshvaraya Namah" 21 times. Offer Mishri and lotus seeds.

Step 7: Aarti

Perform a vibrant aarti using the Aarti Thali (₹299) and lit Bhimseni Kapoor (₹149). Sing "Om Jai Lakshmi Mata" with your family. The aarti should be joyful and celebratory.

Step 8: Lighting Diyas Throughout the Home

After the puja, light Clay Diyas (₹99) in every room, every corner, at the threshold, on the roof, and on windowsills. The home must be completely illuminated — darkness is considered the absence of Lakshmi. Traditionally, the main door is kept open during the puja to welcome the Goddess.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time is best for Diwali Lakshmi Puja?

The Pradosh Kaal — approximately 1.5 hours after sunset on Kartik Amavasya — is considered the most auspicious time for Lakshmi Puja. The Nishita Kaal (midnight) is preferred for those performing the puja in the Tantric tradition. Most families perform the puja between 6 PM and 9 PM. Avoid performing the puja before sunset on Amavasya. Use our Kundali Analysis (₹499) for a precise city-specific Pradosh window.

Can we do Diwali Lakshmi Puja before Pradosh Kaal?

No. The puja must be performed after sunset, during or after the Pradosh Kaal. Performing it during the day negates its purpose — Lakshmi is believed to travel at night on Diwali, and the illuminated home serves as a beacon for her. Prepare your altar and samagri in advance, but begin the ritual only after the sun has set.

What is Kuber Puja and why is it done on Diwali?

Lord Kuber is the god of wealth and the treasurer of the divine realm. He is Lakshmi's ally — where Lakshmi brings wealth, Kuber maintains and multiplies it. By worshipping both together on Diwali night, devotees invite not just the arrival of prosperity but its long-term retention and growth. Kuber's mantra is especially powerful for business owners and those seeking financial stability.

Why are Kaudi shells and Gomti Chakra placed in Lakshmi Puja?

Kaudi (Cowrie shells) are ancient symbols of wealth and Lakshmi — in pre-modern India, they were used as currency. Placing Kaudi shells (₹99) on the altar during Diwali Puja invites financial abundance. Gomti Chakra (₹99) is a naturally occurring spiral shell found in the Gomti river, considered a form of Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra and highly auspicious for wealth and protection.

What should the home smell like during Diwali Lakshmi Puja?

Fragrance is a key element of Lakshmi's welcome. Burn incense (preferably rose, jasmine, or sandalwood), light camphor (Bhimseni Kapoor) during aarti, and keep fresh flowers on the altar. Avoid synthetic fragrances during the puja — use natural incense sticks or dhoop cones.

Should the main door be kept open during Diwali Puja?

Yes — keeping the main door open (or at least unlocked and ajar) during the Lakshmi Puja is an ancient tradition. The Lakshmi Feet Stickers leading from the entrance to the altar symbolise the Goddess walking in. A closed door is considered an obstacle to her entry. You can use a decorative mango leaf toran on the door to mark it as a sacred, welcoming entrance.

Welcome Goddess Lakshmi into Your Home This Diwali

Diwali is the one night of the year when the doors between the divine and human worlds open widest. Make your home worthy of the Goddess's visit.

Om Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namah. May the Goddess of Abundance bless every corner of your home this Diwali and always.
