Devshayani Ekadashi 2026: Date, Vrat Vidhi, Katha & Chaturmas Significance
Among the twenty-four Ekadashis of the year, few carry the spiritual weight of Devshayani Ekadashi — also lovingly called Ashadhi Ekadashi, Hari Shayani Ekadashi, or Padma Ekadashi. This is the sacred day on which Bhagwan Vishnu closes His eyes and enters Yoga Nidra, His four-month cosmic slumber upon the coils of Sheshnag in the ocean of milk. From this single tithi, the holy period of Chaturmas begins — a time when the heavens turn inward and devotees turn toward devotion, discipline, and purity.
In 2026, this deeply auspicious day falls on Saturday, 25th July. If you have ever wished to begin an Ekadashi vrat, there is no more blessed doorway than this one. Let this guide walk you gently through the date, the timings, the beautiful story behind it, and exactly how to observe it at home.
Date & Timings at a Glance
Because Ekadashi tithi can begin and end mid-day, the vrat is observed on the day when the tithi prevails at sunrise. Here are the key timings for 2026 (based on New Delhi; adjust slightly for your city):

The Significance: When Shree Hari Goes to Rest
Devshayani Ekadashi marks the tender, awe-filled moment when Bhagwan Vishnu — the great preserver of the universe — withdraws into Yoga Nidra. On this day, He reclines upon Sheshnag, the thousand-hooded serpent, in Ksheer Sagar, the shimmering ocean of milk, and rests peacefully for four months. He does not awaken until Prabodhini (Devuthani) Ekadashi in the month of Kartik (October–November).
These four months are known as Chaturmas. Because the Lord is in cosmic sleep, tradition holds that grand auspicious ceremonies — weddings, housewarmings, sacred-thread ceremonies, and new ventures — are paused. But far from being a “dead” period, Chaturmas is considered the most fertile season for the soul. It is the time for fasting, japa, charity, satsang, and reading of the scriptures. What the outer world sets aside, the inner world takes up.
The Vrat Katha: King Mandhata and the Three-Year Drought
The glory of this Ekadashi is beautifully revealed in the story of the righteous King Mandhata, narrated in the Puranas.
King Mandhata was a just and generous ruler under whom his people never knew sorrow. But one year, the rains failed. A single dry year became two, and two became three. Crops withered in the fields, rivers thinned, and famine crept through the once-prosperous kingdom. The people cried out, yet the King — despite all his virtue — could find no remedy.
Heartbroken, King Mandhata journeyed into the forest to seek the counsel of the wise sage Angira (in some tellings, Sage Vashishtha). The sage listened with compassion and revealed the cause and the cure: let the King and all his subjects observe the Devshayani Ekadashi vrat with complete faith and discipline, worshipping Bhagwan Vishnu. So the King returned and, together with his people, kept the fast with sincerity and love. Pleased by their devotion, Shree Hari sent the rains at last. The land turned green, the granaries filled, and joy returned to every home.
The lesson endures: when human effort reaches its limit, sincere surrender to the Divine opens the door that nothing else can.
How to Observe Devshayani Ekadashi (Puja Vidhi)
You do not need elaborate arrangements — only a clean space and a sincere heart. Here is a simple step-by-step vidhi:
- Wake early (Brahma Muhurta) and bathe. Sprinkle a few drops of Gangajal for purity around your puja space.
- Take the sankalp (vow) to observe the vrat, resolving to keep it with devotion and restraint.
- Set up the altar: place an idol or image of Bhagwan Vishnu (or Laddu Gopal). Offer a seat, light a ghee diya, and burn camphor and incense.
- Offer with love: yellow flowers (especially lotus), yellow garments or cloth, tulsi leaves, chandan, akshat, and panchamrit. Vishnu is fond of yellow — use it generously.
- Chant & recite: the Vishnu Sahasranama, “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya,” and the Devshayani Ekadashi katha.
- Stay awake at night (jagran) if you can, singing bhajans and aarti in the Lord’s honour before He rests.
- Perform Parana the next morning (26 July, within the given window) by offering food to a Brahmin or the needy, then breaking your own fast.

Fasting Rules (Vrat Niyam)
The Ekadashi fast is as much about inner cleansing as outer abstinence. Observe according to your capacity — sincerity matters more than severity.
| Do | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Nirjala (waterless) or phalahar (fruit & milk) fast as per capacity | All grains, rice, wheat, and lentils |
| Speak truth, stay calm, chant Vishnu’s names | Onion, garlic, and tamasic foods |
| Charity, service, and reading scripture | Anger, gossip, and negative speech |
| Break the fast within the Parana window on Dwadashi | Sleeping through the day or breaking fast late |
Note: the elderly, unwell, pregnant, and children should keep a gentle phalahar fast. The Lord looks at devotion, not difficulty.
