Masik Shivratri 2026: 9 September Date, Nishita Kaal Puja Vidhi, Vrat Rules & Parana
Most of the Hindu year is loud. Bhadrapada in particular — Ganesh Utsav is about to begin, Teej has just passed, Pitru Paksha is days away. And in the middle of all that noise sits one quiet observance that asks almost nothing of you in daylight and everything of you at midnight: Masik Shivratri.

This month it falls on Wednesday, 9 September 2026. It is the last Masik Shivratri before Pitru Paksha begins and the festival season takes over completely — which makes it, for many devotees, the last unhurried night of Shiva sadhana they will get for several weeks.

The detail that confuses people every month
Notice that Chaturdashi does not begin until 12:32 PM on 9 September. So if you wake up on the morning of the 9th and check the panchang, it will still show Trayodashi. Many devotees see this and assume they have the wrong day.
They don't. Shivratri is a night observance, not a sunrise one. The rule that matters is whether the Chaturdashi tithi covers Nishita Kaal — the sacred midnight window. This month it covers it comfortably, from 12:32 PM on the 9th right through to mid-morning on the 10th. There is no split-date confusion in September 2026: the night of 9–10 September is unambiguously the night.
What is Nishita Kaal?
Nishita Kaal is the eighth muhurta of the night — roughly a 48-minute window (two ghatis) centred on the true midpoint between sunset and sunrise, which is not the same as 12:00 AM on your clock. In most of North India in early September it works out to approximately 11:55 PM – 12:45 AM, but it shifts with your city's longitude. Check your local panchang for the exact minutes before you sit down.
Masik Shivratri vs Maha Shivratri
These are not the same thing, and the difference is worth being clear about.
| Masik Shivratri | Maha Shivratri | |
|---|---|---|
| How often | Every lunar month — 12 or 13 times a year | Once a year |
| Tithi | Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi of any month | Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi of Magha / Phalguna |
| Scale | Quiet, personal, mostly at home | Nationwide, temple queues, all-night jagran |
| 2026 dates | 9 Sep, 8 Oct, 7 Nov, 7 Dec | Was 15 February 2026 |
There is a traditional practice worth knowing: devotees who want something difficult resolved take sankalp on Maha Shivratri and then observe every Masik Shivratri for a full year. The scriptures are unusually direct about this one — what cannot be achieved by ordinary means is said to yield to twelve consecutive Shivratris kept with sincerity.
Masik Shivratri Puja Vidhi
The daytime is simple. The night is where the observance actually lives.
- Morning snan and sankalp. Bathe early, wear clean clothes — white or light colours are traditional for Shiva. Standing before your Shivling or Shiva image, take sankalp: state your name, gotra, place, and what you are observing the vrat for.
- Keep the day light. Fruit, milk, water. Avoid grains, onion, garlic and anything tamasic. The fast is preparation, not the point.
- Evening bath and setup. Bathe again before dusk. Clean the puja space, light a desi ghee deepak, and arrange your offerings.
- Abhishek at Nishita Kaal. This is the heart of it. Perform abhishek on the Shivling with Gangajal, then milk, then Gangajal again.
- Offer the shringar. Chandan, akshat, bilva patra, dhatura, white flowers, bhasma and a few drops of itra. Never offer tulsi, ketaki flowers or haldi to Shiva.
- Japa. Chant Om Namah Shivaya — 108 times at minimum, more if you can stay with it. The Mahamrityunjaya mantra and Shiv Chalisa are both appropriate here.
- Aarti and jagran. Perform aarti on the aarti thali. Those keeping the full vigil stay awake in Shiva-smaran until dawn.
- Parana. Break the fast on the morning of 10 September after sunrise, with prasad, after a final short puja.
The four-prahar abhishek
Devotees keeping the full night vigil divide it into four praharas and perform a separate abhishek in each. It is the most complete form of the observance:
| Prahar | Abhishek dravya | Traditionally for |
|---|---|---|
| First (evening) | Milk | Purity, calm of mind |
| Second (midnight) | Curd | Prosperity, stability |
| Third (late night) | Ghee | Health, vitality |
| Fourth (pre-dawn) | Honey | Sweetness of speech, release from sin |
While offering bilva patra, the traditional verse is:
Tridalam trigunakaram trinetram cha triayudham,
Trijanma papa samharam eka bilvam shivarpanam.
— Three leaves, three gunas, three eyes, three weapons; destroyer of the sins of three births — I offer one bilva to Shiva. One leaf, offered properly, is worth more than a basket offered carelessly.
Gangajal, honey, chandan, bhasma, janeu, itra and the rest of the shringar dravya — assembled for Rudrabhishek so nothing is missing at midnight when the shops are shut.

Vrat Rules: What to Eat and What to Avoid
| Allowed | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Fruit, milk, curd, water | All grains, rice, wheat, pulses |
| Sabudana, singhare ka atta, kuttu | Onion, garlic, common salt |
| Sendha namak, dry fruits | Non-vegetarian food, alcohol |
| Potato, sweet potato, lauki | Anger, gossip, harsh speech |
Unmarried women traditionally keep this vrat praying for a good husband; married women keep it for the wellbeing and long life of their family. But it is not a women's vrat — it is kept widely by men too, particularly those who have taken a twelve-month sankalp.
A practical word: the nirjala (waterless) form is optional, not required. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, elderly or unwell, keep the phalahar form and take your medicines on time. Bholenath is called Bhole — the innocent, easily pleased one — for a reason. He asks for your devotion, not your health.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is Masik Shivratri in September 2026?
Wednesday, 9 September 2026. The Chaturdashi tithi runs from 12:32 PM on 9 September to 10:35 AM on 10 September (IST), and the main puja is at Nishita Kaal on the night of 9–10 September.
The panchang shows Trayodashi on the morning of 9 September. Is the date wrong?
No. Chaturdashi begins at 12:32 PM that day. Shivratri is decided by whether Chaturdashi covers the midnight Nishita Kaal, which it does. The 9th is correct.
What time should I do the puja?
At Nishita Kaal — a roughly 48-minute window around the true midpoint of the night, approximately 11:55 PM to 12:45 AM in most of North India. Check your city's panchang for exact timings.
Can I keep the fast without staying awake all night?
Yes. The full jagran is the most complete form, but a sincere Nishita Kaal puja followed by rest is entirely valid, and is what most householders actually do.
What must never be offered to Shiva?
Tulsi leaves, ketaki (kewda) flowers, haldi, and coconut water for abhishek. Each has a specific story behind the prohibition. Bilva patra, dhatura, bhang, white flowers, milk and Gangajal are all welcome.
When do I break the fast?
On the morning of 10 September, after sunrise and after a short concluding puja. Some traditions wait until Chaturdashi ends at 10:35 AM — follow your family practice.
Is Masik Shivratri the same as Pradosh Vrat?
No. Pradosh is on Trayodashi and is worshipped at twilight (pradosh kaal, around sunset). Masik Shivratri is on Chaturdashi and is worshipped at midnight. They fall on consecutive tithis, which is why they are often confused.
The Night Before the Season Begins
After this Shivratri, Bhadrapada Amavasya arrives, then Pitru Paksha, then Navratri, and the calendar does not go quiet again until well past Diwali. If you have been meaning to begin a Shiva practice — a twelve-month Shivratri sankalp, a regular abhishek, even just the Chalisa on a Monday — this is a good night to start, precisely because nothing else is competing for your attention.
One bilva leaf. One lamp. Om Namah Shivaya. That has always been enough.
Har Har Mahadev. 🙏
