It is much better than that, and almost nobody is saying why. Diwali is not merely a good date for a Ramayana film. Diwali is the Ramayana's final chapter. The festival exists because of the story the film is telling. Every diya lit on that night is lit for the moment the epic ends.

Which leads to something quietly remarkable about this release, and we will come to it.

⏰ Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November. Ramayana: Part 1 releases in the Diwali 2026 window — the makers have confirmed “Diwali 2026”, and trade reports have listed dates between 5 and 8 November. Part 2 follows on Diwali 2027.

The trailer is out, and it has done what a Ramayana adaptation most needs to do: it has been treated as an act of shraddha rather than a spectacle. Rahman and Zimmer scoring the same film is, in itself, a statement of how seriously the material is being taken.

Why Diwali Is the Ramayana's Ending

Ask most people why we light diyas and you will get “Lakshmi ji comes” — which is true, and is one of several strands. But the oldest and most widespread reason is narrative, and it is the last event of the Ramayana.

Shri Ram completes fourteen years of exile. Ravana is defeated. Sita Mata is recovered. And on the Amavasya of Kartik — the darkest night of that lunar month — Ram, Sita and Lakshman return home to Ayodhya.

The city had waited fourteen years. It was a moonless night. So the people of Ayodhya lined every wall, every doorway, every ghat with rows of earthen lamps so that their king would not walk home in darkness.

That is the festival. The word says so plainly: dīpa (lamp) + āvali (a row) — Deepavali, a row of lamps. Not decoration. A welcome.

Every year since, on the same tithi, we repeat what Ayodhya did. That is why the diya matters more than the lights, and why the doorway matters more than the balcony — the lamp is placed where someone arriving would see it.

The other Diwali stories are real too

Honesty requires saying that Diwali carries more than one memory. Lakshmi ji's emergence during the Samudra Manthan and her puja on Kartik Amavasya; Shri Krishna's defeat of Narakasura, remembered as Naraka Chaturdashi; the Pandavas' return from exile; Bhagwan Mahavira's nirvana for Jains; Bandi Chhor Divas for Sikhs. A festival this old gathers meanings.

But the diya — the specific act of lining a path with light for someone coming home — belongs to Ayodhya.

The Ending the Film Will Not Show You This Diwali

Here is the remarkable part.

The makers have not officially revealed where Part 1 stops. What is confirmed is only that the story is split across two films. Trade expectation is that Part 1 runs from Ram's birth and education through the swayamvar, the exile, Surpanakha, the golden deer, Sita Mata's abduction and Jatayu's sacrifice — ending somewhere around Hanuman ji's entry, his leap to Lanka, or his first sight of Sita in the Ashok Vatika.

All of which means: Part 1 almost certainly ends before Ravana is defeated, and long before Ayodhya is lit.

So on Diwali 2026, families will come home from a film about exile, loss and a search that has not yet succeeded — and then light rows of lamps to celebrate a homecoming the film has not reached. The festival will be one chapter ahead of the story.

And on Diwali 2027, Part 2 delivers Ram's return to Ayodhya — on the exact festival that exists to commemorate it. Whether or not that was designed, it is a rather beautiful piece of scheduling.

Diwali 2026: The Five Days

Day Date What it marks
Dhanteras Friday, 6 November Dhanvantari; buying metal, first diya
Naraka Chaturdashi Saturday, 7 November Chhoti Diwali; abhyanga snan
Diwali / Lakshmi Puja Sunday, 8 November Kartik Amavasya; Ram's return to Ayodhya
Govardhan Puja Monday, 9 November Annakut; Krishna lifting Govardhan
Bhai Dooj Tuesday, 10 November Yama and Yamuna; brothers and sisters

The Lakshmi Puja muhurat on 8 November is reported at roughly 5:54 PM to 7:50 PM. Muhurat shifts by city, so confirm against your local panchang before fixing your time.

How to Observe Diwali as the Ramayana's Last Chapter

If the film has put the story back in your mind, this is a good year to let that show in how you keep the festival.

  • Light the doorway first. Before the balcony, before the terrace — the threshold. That is where a returning traveller is received. An akhand diya kept burning through the night is the traditional form.
  • Use mitti diyas, not only electric lights. Ayodhya used clay and oil. A row of handcrafted clay diyas along the entrance does what the story describes.
  • Read before you light. A few dohas of the Ramcharitmanas, or the Sundarkand, on the evening of the 8th changes the whole texture of the night.
  • Keep Ram naam through the five days. Not as a task — as a background. It is his homecoming.
  • Do the Lakshmi puja properly. The Lakshmi-Ganesh sthapana, kheel-batasha, and aarti on the aarti thali at the muhurat.

Fourteen Years, and a Row of Lamps

Whatever the film turns out to be, it has already done one useful thing: it has made a great many people curious again about a story they thought they already knew.

This Diwali, when you set the first diya at the door, it is worth pausing for the length of one breath to remember what the gesture is. Somebody has been away a long time. The night is moonless. You are lighting the path so they can find their way home.

Jai Shri Ram. 🙏
