Is Hanuman Ansh a True Story?

It is best described as inspired by rather than a documentary. The makers have said they researched Maharaj-ji's life and teachings before writing, and the film's spine — his devotion, his insistence on feeding people, the transformations reported by those around him — is faithful to what devotees have recorded for decades. But the emotional framing, the composite characters and the ordering of events are cinematic.

The householder who became a sadhu — and then a householder again

He was born Lakshman Narayan Sharma around 1900 into a Brahmin family. Standard reference sources place his birth at Akbarpur in what is now Ambedkar Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh; the film's team has publicly associated his origins with the Firozabad region, and the announced sequel is set to begin there. Accounts of his early life genuinely differ, and devotees have never treated the discrepancy as important.

Married by his parents around the age of eleven, he left home to wander as a sadhu, known then as Baba Lakshman Das. Years later he returned at his father's request and lived as a householder; he fathered two sons and a daughter. This detail matters more than it looks. The man the film is about was not a renunciate who escaped ordinary life — he carried a family, and taught in the middle of ordinary life.

How he got the name

The most retold story of his life is the train. Travelling without a ticket, he was thrown off at a village station called Neeb Karori. The train, by every account passed down, then refused to move. When the railway staff finally asked him to reboard, he is said to have set two conditions: that a proper station be built for the villagers, and that sadhus be treated with respect. The station came. The village gave him its name — Neeb Karori, which most people now say as Neem Karoli.

Notice what he asked for. Not an apology, and nothing for himself. A railway station for a village that did not have one.

Kainchi, and over a hundred temples

Two main ashrams were established in his lifetime — at Kainchi, in the Kumaon hills near Nainital, and at Vrindavan. Kainchi Dham was built in 1964 with a Hanuman temple at its heart, and he spent the last decade of his life there. Over time, more than a hundred temples came up in his name. The Kainchi Dham Mela is still held every 15 June to mark the ashram's founding.

The last journey

In September 1973 he was returning by night train from Agra, where he had seen a heart specialist about chest pain, heading back towards Kainchi. He and his companions got down at Mathura station, where he began convulsing, and he was taken to hospital in Vrindavan. He left his body at about 1:15 a.m. on 11 September 1973, having slipped into a diabetic coma. His last words, repeated over and over, were “Jaya Jagadish Hare.” His samadhi stands in the Vrindavan ashram complex.

Why “Hanuman Ansh”? The Title Is the Whole Point

Ansh means a part, a portion, an emanation. To call him Hanuman ansh is to say what his devotees said quietly for years: that something of Hanuman ji was present in him.

Whether or not one accepts that claim, the pattern of his life is unmistakably Hanuman's. He built Hanuman temples wherever he settled. He turned every question about himself back towards Hanuman ji. He never gathered a following on the strength of his own personality — the standard instruction was to go do the Chalisa, to serve, to feed someone. Strength placed entirely at someone else's disposal, and no interest at all in being seen: that is the Hanuman template, and it is what the film's title is pointing at.

His teaching is usually condensed into three phrases that have travelled around the world:

• Remember God.

There is no fourth line. He left no system, no initiation ladder, no book of his own. What he left was a kitchen that never stopped running and a lot of people who had been fed.

11 September is the Gregorian anniversary of his mahasamadhi — in 2026, the 53rd. But his body was cremated on Anant Chaturdashi, and it is that tithi, not the English date, on which the Vrindavan ashram observes the annual Mahasamadhi Bhandara. In 2026, Anant Chaturdashi falls on Friday, 25 September. Devotees gather in large numbers, and — fittingly for him — the central act of the day is feeding people.
