This year it lands right in the middle of Ganesh Utsav — four days after the Ganpati sthapana of 14 September and eight days before Anant Chaturdashi. So in thousands of workshops and factories across India, Bappa will already be seated in the corner when the tools are laid out before Vishwakarma. It is a beautiful overlap: the remover of obstacles and the maker of worlds, honoured in the same room, in the same week.

Why this date barely moves every year

Here is something most people never notice: Diwali, Holi and Janmashtami swing across a month of the English calendar, but Vishwakarma Puja is always around 16–18 September. That is because it is not a tithi festival at all.

By the time of the Mahabharata and the Puranas, he has become a distinct personality: the divine architect (devashilpi), master of the Vastu Shastra, the engineer of the gods. The scriptures credit him with an astonishing portfolio:

• Golden Lanka — the city later occupied by Ravana
• Dwarka — Lord Krishna's sea-facing capital
• Indraprastha and Hastinapur — including the illusion-hall that so confounded Duryodhana
• The Sudarshan Chakra — shaped, in one telling, from the excess radiance he pared off Surya on his lathe
• The Vajra — Indra's thunderbolt, forged from the bones of the sage Dadhichi
• The Pushpaka Vimana, the palaces of Indra and Kubera, and the tools of the devas

Tradition gives Vishwakarma five sons, and each inherited one material. This is the mythic charter for India's artisan lineages — and the reason a blacksmith and a goldsmith both look up to the same deity.

Vishwakarma Puja Vidhi: Step by Step

Unlike a vrat, this is a puja of the workplace rather than the body. There is no compulsory fast. What is required is shram offered as worship — you clean the space with your own hands.

1. Clean everything the night before. Machines, tools, benches, vehicles, the shop floor. Grease and dust are removed, not hidden. This is considered part of the puja, not preparation for it.
2. Set up the sthaan. Place a picture or idol of Lord Vishwakarma on a clean red or yellow cloth, facing east or north. Draw a rangoli or swastika at the entrance.
3. Install the kalash. Fill a copper kalash with water and a few drops of Gangajal, add a mango leaf sprig and a coconut, and tie mauli around its neck.
4. Take sankalp. Holding water, akshat and a flower in your right palm, state your name, gotra, place and the intention — skill, safety, and honest livelihood for everyone who works here.
5. Invoke and offer. Apply chandan and roli tilak, offer akshat, flowers, dhoop and a desi ghee deepak. Chant Om Vishwakarmane Namah — 11, 21 or 108 times.
6. Worship the tools. This is the heart of the day. Tie mauli on each machine, apply a roli-akshat tilak, place a flower on it, and touch it in pranam. Nothing is switched on afterwards — the tools rest.
7. Naivedya. Offer fruit, panchmeva, sweets, a whole coconut and panchamrit.
8. Aarti and prasad. Blow the shankh, perform aarti with a camphor flame on the aarti thali, and distribute prasad to every single worker — apprentice and owner alike. In many workshops this equality is the whole point of the day.
