Krishna Janmashtami 2026: Date, Nishita Puja Muhurat, Vrat Vidhi & Parana
There is one night in the Hindu year when the whole of Bharat stays awake on purpose. Conch shells sound at midnight. Cradles are rocked in homes that have no baby in them. Grandmothers who have not eaten since sunrise finally smile. This is Krishna Janmashtami — the night the Lord who would one day speak the Bhagavad Gita was born in a prison cell in Mathura.
In 2026, that night falls on Friday, 4 September. If you intend to keep the vrat, this is the moment to begin preparing — because Janmashtami is not a vrat you can improvise on the morning of. The fast runs a full day and night, the puja happens at midnight, and the parana has a specific rule that trips up more devotees than any other festival of the year.
Janmashtami 2026: Date & Timings
Janmashtami is observed on the Ashtami tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. Because Shri Krishna was born at midnight under Rohini Nakshatra, the deciding factor is not sunrise — it is whether Ashtami is running during Nishita Kaal, the sacred midnight window.
| Event | Date & Time (IST) |
|---|---|
| Janmashtami (Smarta tradition) | Friday, 4 September 2026 |
| Ashtami Tithi begins | 10:48 AM, 4 September 2026 |
| Ashtami Tithi ends | 11:23 AM, 5 September 2026 |
| Nishita Puja Muhurat | 11:57 PM (4 Sep) – 12:43 AM (5 Sep) |
| Parana (breaking the fast) | After 11:23 AM, Saturday 5 September |
| Dahi Handi / Gokulashtami | Saturday, 5 September 2026 |
Timings are calculated for Delhi. Sunrise, moonrise and Nishita Kaal shift by several minutes across India and by hours abroad — always cross-check a panchang set to your own city.
Why some families observe on 5 September
Every year devotees ask why one neighbour keeps the vrat on Friday and another on Saturday. Both are correct — they follow different traditions.
- Smarta tradition (most households across North India, and the date most temples publish) gives weight to Ashtami being present during Nishita Kaal. This places Janmashtami on 4 September 2026.
- Vaishnava tradition (ISKCON and most Vaishnava sampradayas) gives weight to the udaya tithi and to the union of Ashtami with Rohini Nakshatra, and observes on 5 September 2026. Dahi Handi is celebrated on this day.
There is no conflict here and no "wrong" answer. Follow your family's parampara, or the calendar of the temple you belong to. If your family has no fixed custom, 4 September is the safer default.
The Story: A Birth in Chains
The night Krishna was born, Mathura was ruled by fear. King Kansa had been warned by an aakashvani — a voice from the sky — that the eighth child of his own sister Devaki would be his death. He imprisoned Devaki and her husband Vasudev, and killed each of their children as they were born.
By the time the eighth child came, it was the darkest night of Bhadrapada, and it was raining. And then something extraordinary happened. The guards fell into a deep sleep. The iron chains slipped from Vasudev's wrists. The prison doors opened by themselves. Vasudev lifted the newborn in a basket, walked out unchallenged, and carried him toward the Yamuna.
The river was in flood. Vasudev stepped in anyway. The waters rose to his shoulders, touched the infant's feet — and then parted. Sheshnag spread his hood above the child to shield him from the rain. Vasudev crossed to Gokul, laid Krishna beside the sleeping Yashoda, took her newborn daughter in his arms, and returned to the cell. The chains closed again behind him.
This is the heart of Janmashtami, and it is why the festival is loved so fiercely. Divinity did not arrive in a palace. It arrived in a prison, at midnight, in the rain — and every locked door opened for it. That is the promise devotees hold on to as they keep awake through the night.
Janmashtami Puja Vidhi: Step by Step
The vrat begins at sunrise on 4 September and the main puja is performed at midnight. Here is the full sequence.
Morning (4 September)
- Snan and sankalp. Bathe early, wear clean clothes — yellow or peacock blue are traditional for Krishna. Standing before your mandir, take water in your right palm and make the sankalp: state your name, gotra and your intention to keep the Janmashtami vrat.
- Clean and decorate the mandir. Wash the Laddu Gopal or Krishna idol and place it on a clean chowki with a fresh cloth. Decorate with flowers, mor pankh (peacock feather), tulsi leaves and a small jhula or cradle if you keep one.
- Light a diya with pure desi ghee and keep it burning through the day where possible.
Midnight — Nishita Kaal Puja (11:57 PM – 12:43 AM)
- Abhishek. Bathe the idol with panchamrit — milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar — then with clean water and finally a few drops of Gangajal. This is the most beloved part of the night; the whole family usually joins.
- Vastra and shringar. Dry the idol gently, dress it in new clothes, add jewellery, a mor pankh in the crown and a bansuri (flute) in the hand.
- Tilak. Apply chandan and roli, then offer akshat.
- Offerings. Offer tulsi patra (essential — no bhog to Krishna is complete without it), flowers, dhoop, deep, fruits, and the bhog: makhan-mishri, panjiri, dhaniya panjiri, and panchmeva.
- Jhula. Place Krishna in the cradle and rock it gently while singing "Nand ke ghar anand bhayo, jai Kanhaiya Lal ki."
- Mantra jaap. Chant "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" 108 times, or the Krishna Ashtakam if your family keeps it.
- Shankhnaad and aarti. Blow the shankh to announce the birth, then perform aarti with a ghee diya and camphor. Distribute prasad and charnamrit.

Janmashtami Vrat Rules: What to Eat, What to Avoid
Janmashtami is a ratri vrat — the fast is held through the day and broken only after both Ashtami and the night puja are complete.
| Permitted (phalahar) | To be avoided |
|---|---|
| Milk, curd, buttermilk, makhan | Grains — wheat, rice, dal, besan |
| Fruits and fresh fruit juice | Onion and garlic |
| Kuttu, singhara and rajgira atta | Common salt (use sendha namak) |
| Sabudana, makhana, potato, sweet potato | Non-vegetarian food, alcohol, tamasik food |
| Dry fruits, panchmeva, makhan-mishri | Anger, harsh speech, gossip |
Types of Janmashtami vrat
- Nirjala vrat — without food or water for the full day and night. Kept by the most devout; not advisable for children, the elderly, pregnant women or anyone on medication.
- Phalahar vrat — fruits, milk and vrat-friendly flours through the day. This is what most families keep.
- Ek-bhukta — a single satvik meal, usually taken before sunset.
Shastra is clear that health comes first. A vrat kept with a weak body and a distracted mind earns less than a lighter vrat kept with full shraddha. Choose honestly.
The parana rule most people get wrong
Many devotees break the fast immediately after the midnight aarti. Strictly, the Janmashtami parana should be done after both Ashtami tithi and Rohini Nakshatra have ended. In 2026, Ashtami runs until 11:23 AM on 5 September — so the correct parana is after that time on Saturday morning.
If fasting that long is not possible for you, the widely accepted concession is to take charnamrit and prasad after the midnight puja and complete the parana properly the next morning. Do this consciously as a concession, not by accident.
Janmashtami Puja Samagri Checklist
Assemble this the day before — nothing derails a midnight puja faster than discovering at 11:50 PM that there is no tulsi in the house.

- Roli / kumkum and chandan powder for tilak

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Janmashtami 2026 on 4 September or 5 September?
Both dates are observed. The Smarta tradition — followed by most households and temples across North India — observes on Friday, 4 September 2026. The Vaishnava and ISKCON tradition observes on Saturday, 5 September 2026, which is also when Dahi Handi is celebrated. Follow your family's parampara.
What time is the Janmashtami puja in 2026?
The Nishita Kaal puja muhurat is approximately 11:57 PM on 4 September to 12:43 AM on 5 September (Delhi timings). This is the midnight window in which Shri Krishna is believed to have been born. Adjust for your own city.
When can I break the Janmashtami fast?
Strictly, after Ashtami tithi ends — that is after 11:23 AM on Saturday, 5 September 2026. Many families take charnamrit and prasad after the midnight aarti and complete the formal parana the following morning.
Can I keep the Janmashtami vrat if I have a health condition?
Yes, in a modified form. Take a phalahar vrat with milk, fruits and vrat-friendly flours rather than a nirjala fast, and never skip prescribed medication. Shraddha, not severity, is what the vrat measures.
Why is tulsi essential in Krishna's bhog?
Tulsi is considered dear to Lord Vishnu and all his avatars. Traditionally, no bhog offered to Krishna is regarded as complete without at least one tulsi patra placed on it. Pluck tulsi before sunset — never at night or on Ekadashi.
What is Dahi Handi and when is it in 2026?
Dahi Handi re-enacts the child Krishna's makhan-chori — young men form human pyramids to break a pot of curd hung high above the street. In 2026 it falls on Saturday, 5 September, celebrated most spectacularly in Maharashtra.
Can Janmashtami puja be done if there is no Laddu Gopal idol at home?
Yes. A framed picture of Shri Krishna, or even a supari placed on akshat and invoked with the sankalp, is accepted. Bhaav matters more than the murti.
Ask Him for What You Are Actually Carrying
Janmashtami is not only a birthday. It is a reminder that the divine enters the world precisely where things look most hopeless — in a cell, in a storm, under a tyrant's watch. Whatever you are carrying into this Bhadrapada night, bring it to the cradle honestly. That is what the vrat is for.
Our Santan Gopal Group Sankalp Puja is performed by pandits with your name and gotra taken in the sankalp — traditionally observed for child blessings, couple prayers and family well-being. Video and prasad sent to you after the puja, wherever in the world you are.
