Outside Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Konkan and parts of Karnataka, very few families have heard of her. Inside them, Gauri's arrival is the emotional centre of the whole Ganeshotsav — the day the doorway is covered in tiny painted footprints, the day sixteen vegetables are cooked, the day the women of the street sit together for haldi-kumkum.

Here are the exact 2026 dates and muhurat, the vidhi for all three days, the story, and the samagri to keep ready.

Jyeshtha Gauri 2026: Dates and Timings

Gauri's three days are the one major observance in the Hindu year that is fixed by nakshatra, not by tithi. This is why the dates never quite line up with the rest of the panchang, and why families who go looking for a "Gauri tithi" cannot find one.

The rule is simple and worth remembering: Gauri is invited in Anuradha, worshipped in Jyeshtha, and sent home in Moola. Because nakshatras run for slightly different lengths in different cities, confirm the Avahan cut-off time with your local panchang — that is the one timing that genuinely matters.

Where this falls in Ganeshotsav 2026

Ganesh Chaturthi sthapana is on 14 September 2026 and the grand visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi is 25 September. Gauri's three days sit in the middle — days four, five and six of the ten-day festival — which is why the Marathi household calls the whole thing Gauri-Ganpati rather than Ganpati alone.

Who Is Jyeshtha Gauri? The Story Behind the Three Days

Two accounts live side by side, and most families hold both at once without any contradiction.

In the first, Gauri is Parvati herself — Ganesh's mother — arriving at her son's house as a mother visits her married child. She stays the customary three days a guest is given, is fed the best the kitchen can produce, is dressed in a new saree and full shringar, and then returns. The tenderness of the festival comes entirely from this reading. Every ritual is the ritual of receiving your mother.

In the second, she is Mahalakshmi. The Puranic account tells of the asuras tormenting married women until the women prayed to Mahalakshmi on Bhadrapada Shukla Ashtami. The Devi destroyed the asuras and restored the women their saubhagya, and in gratitude they began worshipping her every year on these days. This is why the festival is called Mahalakshmi Pujan across Vidarbha and much of Marathwada, and why the blessing asked for is a long and happy married life.

Why two idols, not one

Almost every household brings two Gauris — Jyeshtha, the elder sister, and Kanishtha, the younger. They are sisters who arrive together and leave together. Some families read them as Lakshmi and her elder sister Alakshmi, worshipped together so that fortune and misfortune are both acknowledged and neither is insulted. In practice, they simply stand side by side, and no house brings one without the other.

Day 1: Gauri Avahan Vidhi (17 September)

The Avahan is not a puja performed at an altar. It is a welcome performed at the front door, and the walking is the ritual.

1. Prepare the path. Clean the threshold and draw small rangoli footprints leading from the main door all the way to the place where Gauri will be seated — a trail for her to walk in on.
2. Purify the space. Sprinkle Gangajal through the house, and set a wooden chowki near the Ganpati with a red cloth over it.
3. Bring her in. A married woman of the house carries the Gauri masks or idols in from the doorway, pausing at the threshold, the kitchen, the water storage and the safe or cupboard — so that the Devi blesses the food, the water and the wealth of the household on her way in.
4. The question at the door. At each pause the women of the family ask, "Gauri kashavar aali?" — On what has Gauri come? The answer is called back: on feet of gold, bringing wealth and grain. Many families use their own local wording; the exchange matters more than the exact line.
5. Seat her beside Ganpati. Face the idols north or east. Perform kalash sthapana with a copper kalash, adding water, akshat, a coin, a haldi ki ganth and a supari.
6. First aarti. Begin with Ganesh puja and modak, then offer Gauri kumkum, chandan, flowers and a ghee lamp. Tie mauli around the kalash. Light aarti is done the same evening.
7. Simple naivedya. The first night is deliberately light — usually bhaji and bhakri, the everyday food of the house, offered as you would feed a traveller who has just arrived.

Day 2: Gauri Pujan (18 September) — The Big Day

This is the day the whole festival is built around. The house cooks more on this day than on any other in Bhadrapada.

Shringar

Gauri is bathed, wiped clean and given solah shringar — the sixteen adornments of a married woman. She is draped in a new saree or a chunri, given bangles, a nose ring, a mangalsutra, kajal, a bindi, and sindoor in the parting of her hair. Fresh flowers — especially durva, red roses and gajra — are added last. Many families use jewellery that has been in the house for generations, brought out only for these three days.

The naivedya of sixteen

The classical offering is sixteen preparations — sixteen vegetables (solaa bhaji), sixteen types of leafy greens, sixteen puran polis, sixteen ladoos, karanji, chakli, ambil, and rice with ghee. Alongside them go panchmeva, fruit and coconut. Households that cannot manage sixteen of everything cook five or seven and offer them with the same intent — the number is a tradition, not a condition.

Haldi-kumkum

In the afternoon or evening, married women of the neighbourhood are invited. Each is seated before Gauri, given haldi and kumkum on the forehead, offered a betel leaf, supari, a fruit and a small gift, and blessed with saubhagyavati bhava. In many streets this is the single occasion in the year when every household's women sit together in one room. The Gauri festival's real work is done here.

Jagran

The night of Pujan is traditionally kept awake with Gauri geete — the folk songs sung only for these three days — jhimma, phugadi and other circle games played by the women, and aarti at intervals through the night.

Day 3: Gauri Visarjan (19 September)

1. Perform the morning puja and a final aarti with kapoor and the aarti thali.
2. Offer the customary farewell naivedya — dahi-bhat (curd rice), simple and cooling, the food given to someone about to travel.
3. Women apply haldi-kumkum to the Gauris and then to one another, and ask her to come again next year.
4. Carry the idols out, again pausing at the threshold, and immerse them. Keep a little of the visarjan water and sprinkle it through the house afterwards — this is done in almost every home.
5. Clay idols dissolved in a bucket at home can be poured into the garden or a tulsi pot. Metal or permanent Gauri masks are wrapped, blessed and put away for the next year rather than immersed.

None of these is more correct than the others. The rule that holds everywhere is simply this: keep the form your family has always kept. A house that has brought river stones for four generations does not switch to masks because the neighbours have them.

Generally no. Jyeshtha Gauri is a festival of hospitality rather than fasting. Some women take only one meal on Pujan day until the naivedya is offered, but there is no prescribed vrat. The tradition asks you to cook, not to abstain.

Can Gauri be brought if there is no Ganpati at home this year?
Yes. Many families whose Ganpati tradition has lapsed still keep Gauri, and some households keep only Gauri by inheritance. If both are kept, Ganpati is installed first and Gauri is seated beside him.

Why must she be welcomed before a specific time on the 17th?
Because the Avahan is tied to Anuradha nakshatra rather than to a tithi. Once Anuradha ends, the prescribed window for inviting her closes. What if someone in the family is in mourning (sutak) this year?
Households observing sutak do not install Gauri or Ganpati that year. The customary practice is to ask a close relative to keep the Gauris on the family's behalf, and to resume the following year.

Can working women manage the full three days?
Most do a shortened version and it is entirely accepted: Avahan on the evening of the 17th after returning home, a smaller naivedya of five items instead of sixteen on the 18th, haldi-kumkum on the weekend, and Visarjan on Saturday morning. Gauri comes for the welcome, not for the scale of it.

The Blessing Gauri Is Asked For

Every festival asks for something specific. Ganesh Chaturthi asks for obstacles to be removed. Pitru Paksha asks for the ancestors to be at peace. Jyeshtha Gauri asks for something quieter and harder to name — that the household stays whole. A long marriage, children who do well, grain in the store, and the women of the street still sitting together next September.

That is why the rituals are all domestic ones: a path of footprints, a pause at the kitchen, a new saree, sixteen vegetables, curd rice for the road. Nothing grand.
