The Story Behind the Festival

Every child in a Hindu household knows how Ganesha received His elephant head — Parvati fashioned Him from the sandalwood paste of Her own body, appointed Him guardian at Her door, and Shiva, denied entry to His own home by a boy He had never met, struck off the child's head in fury. When Parvati's grief threatened to unmake creation, Shiva restored the boy with the head of the first creature found facing north: an elephant. And He gave Him a boon greater than the life returned — that no yagna, no journey, no undertaking anywhere in the three worlds would succeed unless Ganesha were worshipped first.

Why You Must Not Look at the Moon on Ganesh Chaturthi

The Puranas relate that after a feast of modaks, Ganesha was returning home on His mouse when the little vehicle stumbled and He fell. Chandra Dev, the moon god, watching from above, laughed. Even Lord Krishna was not spared. It was Sage Narada who explained the true cause: the moon, and the curse.

Narada also gave the remedy, and it is why this story is read aloud in homes across India every Ganesh Chaturthi. Ganesh Sthapana & Puja Vidhi: Step by Step

The ritual has a shape that has not changed in centuries. Follow it in order.

1. Prepare the space

Bathe early and wear clean, preferably new clothes. Clean the puja area thoroughly and place a wooden chowki facing north or east. Spread a fresh red or yellow cloth over it. Draw a swastika and place a small heap of akshat at the centre where the murti will rest.

2. Sankalp

Sit facing the chowki, take water, akshat and a flower in your right palm, and state your sankalp — your name, gotra, place, and the resolve to worship Shri Ganesha for the days you intend to keep Him. Release the water at the end.

3. Pran Pratishtha and Sthapana

Within the Madhyahna muhurat, install the murti on the akshat. Sprinkle Gangajal over it, chant "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah", and invoke the Lord's living presence. Place a copper kalash filled with water, a coin, supari and mango leaves beside the murti, topped with a coconut.

4. Shodashopachara Puja
