1. Prepare a clean space. Bathe, wear clean clothes and arrange a picture or suitable worshipped murti of Balarama or Krishna-Balarama on your altar. A picture is sufficient; purchasing a new idol is not necessary.
2. Make a gentle sankalpa. Offer your intention to worship with sincerity, gratitude and self-discipline. Pray for the strength to act truthfully and care for those entrusted to you.

6. Remember the divine names. Repeat “Om Balabhadraya Namah” calmly, or chant the names of Krishna and Balarama. A short, attentive prayer is more meaningful than hurried repetition aimed only at reaching a number.
7. Read, perform aarti and share prasad. Reflect on Balarama’s appearance, offer aarti and distribute prasad respectfully. End with a small act of service.

Fasting Rules: Follow the Correct Tradition

Fasting practices are not identical across all Balarama celebrations. Do not automatically import Hal Shashthi restrictions concerning ploughed-land produce or particular dairy foods into this September observance. Similarly, do not assume an Ekadashi grain restriction applies simply because the day is a vrat.

If your family observes a fast, follow its customary food choices and breaking time. Others may choose a simple sattvic vegetarian meal and devote more time to prayer. Abstaining from harsh speech, wastefulness and unnecessary distraction is a useful companion to any dietary discipline.
