The Katha: How Radha Rani Appeared

Vrishabhanu, the gopa chieftain of Barsana, and his wife Kirti had long prayed for a daughter. The Braj tradition tells that Vrishabhanu came upon a radiant infant girl resting upon a lotus on the water, and brought her home. They named her Radha.

The detail that devotees hold most tenderly is this: the child did not open her eyes. Days passed. Nothing the family tried would make her look upon the world. Then Yashoda came to Barsana with the infant Krishna in her arms — and only when Krishna was placed before her did Radha open her eyes for the first time. Her sight, from the very beginning, was reserved for him alone.

That single image carries the whole theology of the day. Radha's love is not a response to Krishna; it is the condition of her existence. When devotees worship her on this Ashtami, they are asking for a fraction of that orientation — a heart that turns toward the divine before it turns anywhere else.

Some traditions place her appearance at Raval, a village near Gokul, with Barsana as her maternal home. Both are honoured, and both hold major temples. Different sampradayas cherish slightly different tellings, and all are held as equally valid.

The Day Radha Rani's Feet Are Seen

At the Shriji Temple in Barsana, Radha Rani's feet remain covered throughout the year. On Radha Ashtami alone they are revealed for darshan. Devotees travel from across India for this single sight. Likewise, bathing in the sacred Radha Kund is restricted through the year — but on Radha Ashtami night, pilgrims wait until midnight to take a dip, believing it draws her grace.

Radha Ashtami Puja Vidhi at Home

The observance scales to your circumstances. A temple-sized celebration is beautiful; so is a clean altar, a lamp and a sincere heart. A typical sequence:

1. Snan and sankalpa. Bathe before sunrise. Offer arghya to Surya Dev with water, then take the sankalpa (resolve) to observe the Radha Ashtami vrat.
2. Prepare the altar. Clean the puja space and sprinkle Gangajal. Spread a yellow cloth on a low wooden chowki and install an image or idol of Radha with Krishna.
3. Establish the kalash. Fill a copper or earthen kalash with water, add a coin and mango leaves, and place a coconut on top. Set it before Radha ji.
4. Panchamrit abhishek. Approaching midday, bathe the deity gently with panchamrit — milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar — then with clean water.
5. Shodashopachara. Offer vastra, chandan, roli, akshat, flowers, tulsi dal, incense and a ghee lamp. Adorn Radha ji with shringar as you are able.
6. Worship Krishna too. After offering to Radha Rani, worship Sri Krishna and offer him tulsi dal with fruits and sweets. On this day the two are never worshipped apart.
7. Bhog. Large temples present chappan bhog — fifty-six items. At home, a small heartfelt offering of kheer, makhan-mishri or panchmeva is fully accepted. The number is an ideal, not a requirement.
8. Jhulan and kirtan. If you keep a swing, place the deities on it and sing. Recite the Radha Chalisa, Radha Kripa Kataksh Stotram or simply Radhe Radhe.
9. Aarti and prasad. Conclude with Radha-Krishna aarti, then distribute prasad to everyone present.

Vrat mantra: chant ॐ ह्रीं राधिकायै नमः (Om Hreem Radhikayai Namah) through the puja, 108 times if you can.
