Chaturmas 2026: Dates, Significance, Rules & What to Avoid
Right now, as Sawan fills homes with the sound of "Om Namah Shivaya" and Kanwariyas walk barefoot toward Shiva temples, something bigger is quietly unfolding in the background — Chaturmas. This four-month period of divine rest, restraint, and inward devotion began just over a week ago, and it will shape the spiritual calendar all the way to Diwali season. If you have been wondering why no one is fixing wedding dates right now, why elders are stricter about certain vegetables, or why this season feels different — Chaturmas is the answer.
What Is Chaturmas?
Chaturmas literally means "four months" (chatur = four, maas = month). It is the period during which, according to scripture, Lord Vishnu withdraws into Yoga Nidra — a divine cosmic sleep — in the Kshir Sagar (the ocean of milk), resting on the coils of Sheshnag. This is not sleep in the ordinary sense but a deep, meditative withdrawal that marks a shift in cosmic rhythm. Since Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, is in this contemplative state, all major auspicious ceremonies that need his blessing — weddings, griha pravesh (housewarming), mundan, and other shubh karya — are paused until he "awakens" on Dev Uthani Ekadashi.

The Story Behind Chaturmas: Vishnu, Bali & Lakshmi's Promise
The most beloved legend behind Chaturmas comes from the story of Vamana Avatar and King Bali. When the demon king Bali's generosity grew boundless, Lord Vishnu appeared as Vamana, a humble dwarf Brahmin, and asked for land equal to three of his steps. Bali agreed — and Vishnu's first two steps covered the entire earth and sky. For the third, Bali humbly offered his own head, so devoted was he. Moved by this surrender, Vishnu did not destroy Bali but instead granted him rulership of the netherworld (Patal Lok) and promised to stay by his side.
Goddess Lakshmi, missing her husband, is said to have gone to Patal Lok disguised as a woman seeking shelter, and cleverly tied a rakhi to Bali, making him her brother. When Bali asked what he could offer her in return, she asked for Vishnu to be released back to Vaikuntha. Bali agreed — but only on the condition that Vishnu would return to him for four months every year. This is why, each year during Chaturmas, Vishnu is believed to reside with Bali, leaving the earthly realm without his direct presence — and why devotees intensify their own spiritual effort during this time, taking on the responsibility Vishnu temporarily sets aside.
The Four Months and What They Bring
Chaturmas is not one long, uniform period — each of its four lunar months carries its own festivals and flavour:
1. Shravan (Sawan) — Devoted to Shiva
The month we are in right now. Shravan belongs to Lord Shiva, marked by Somvar Vrats, Kanwar Yatra, Nag Panchami and Sawan Shivratri. It is considered the ideal time to begin any new spiritual practice.
2. Bhadrapada — Devoted to Ganesha & Krishna
Home to Janmashtami and the ten-day Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, this month shifts focus toward Krishna's leelas and Ganesha's blessings for a smooth Chaturmas ahead.
3. Ashwin — Devoted to the Goddess
Shardiya Navratri, Durga Puja, and Sharad Purnima fall in this month, making it the most Shakti-focused stretch of Chaturmas, culminating in the worship of the Divine Feminine.
4. Kartik — Devoted to Vishnu, Lakshmi & Tulsi
The final month brings Diwali, Govardhan Puja, Bhai Dooj, and finally Tulsi Vivah on Dev Uthani Ekadashi itself — the symbolic wedding of Tulsi to Vishnu that marks the end of Chaturmas and the resumption of all shubh karya.
Chaturmas Niyam: What to Avoid
During these four months, scripture recommends restraint in both action and diet, allowing the mind to turn inward:
- No weddings, mundan, or griha pravesh — these resume only after Dev Uthani Ekadashi
- Avoid travel without purpose — traditionally, sadhus and grihasthas alike were advised to stay rooted in one place
- Reduce tamasic food — onion, garlic, and heavy, stimulating foods are minimised
- Practice moderation — many devotees give up one favourite food item for the entire four months as a personal vrat
Month-Wise Food Restrictions
| Month | Traditionally Avoided |
|---|---|
| Shravan | Green leafy vegetables (palak, methi, sarson) |
| Bhadrapada | Curd, buttermilk, lassi, kadhi |
| Ashwin | Milk (paneer and curdled milk products are usually permitted) |
| Kartik | Urad dal (black gram) and dishes made from it |
These rules vary by family and regional tradition — the underlying spirit matters more than rigid observance, especially for the elderly, unwell, or pregnant.
Devshayani, Kamika, Shravana Putrada, and Dev Uthani Ekadashi all fall within this sacred window. The Sampurna Ekadashi Guide covers all 26 Ekadashi vrat kathas for 2026 — dates, vidhi, and udyapan — in one place.

What to Do During Chaturmas
Where restraint creates space, devotion fills it. Chaturmas is traditionally considered the most fruitful time of the year for:
- Daily japa and mantra chanting — especially the Vishnu Sahasranama, Om Namah Shivaya, or your ishta devata's mantra
- Daan (charity) — donating food, clothes, or umbrellas (traditionally significant during the rainy months) is considered especially meritorious
- Satsang and scripture reading — this is the season devotees traditionally read the Bhagavad Gita, Ramcharitmanas, or Vishnu Purana
- Observing personal vrats — giving up one indulgence for four months as a mark of tapasya
- Regular puja and abhishek — keeping a consistent daily practice at your home mandir

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. When does Chaturmas 2026 start and end?
Chaturmas 2026 began on Devshayani Ekadashi, Saturday, 25 July 2026, and ends on Dev Uthani (Prabodhini) Ekadashi, Saturday, 21 November 2026.
Q. Why are weddings not held during Chaturmas?
Because Lord Vishnu, the preserver whose blessing is considered essential for auspicious beginnings, is in Yoga Nidra during this period. Shubh karya like weddings, griha pravesh, and mundan resume only after he "awakens" on Dev Uthani Ekadashi.
Q. Is Chaturmas only for sadhus and ascetics?
No. While it originated as a period of fixed residence and intensified discipline for wandering monks during the monsoon, householders across India observe simplified versions — dietary restraint, daily puja, daan, and scripture reading.
Q. What is Vishnu's Yoga Nidra?
It is a state of deep divine meditative rest, not ordinary sleep, symbolising a pause in active creation and inviting devotees to turn their attention inward during these four months.
Q. Do the same food restrictions apply to everyone?
No — they vary by family, region, and personal capacity. The elderly, unwell, pregnant, and children are generally exempt or advised to follow a gentler version.
Q. What happens on Dev Uthani Ekadashi?
It marks the end of Chaturmas and Vishnu's symbolic awakening, celebrated with Tulsi Vivah — the ceremonial wedding of Tulsi to Vishnu — after which all auspicious ceremonies can resume.
