16 Somvar Vrat Vidhi: Complete Guide for Solah Somvar Puja

16 Somvar Vrat Vidhi: Complete Guide for Solah Somvar Puja

The 16 Somvar Vrat is one of the most powerful and widely observed Shiva vratas in the Sanatan tradition — sixteen consecutive Monday fasts dedicated to Lord Shiva, believed to fulfil sincere wishes, remove obstacles, and invite divine blessings into every aspect of life. Rooted in the Skanda Purana, this vrat carries immense shakti for devotees who complete it with faith and proper vidhi. This complete guide covers everything — from the rules and daily ritual to the closing ceremony after the 16th Monday.

What is the 16 Somvar Vrat?

"Somvar" means Monday, which is ruled by Lord Shiva (Soma, the moon, is one of Shiva's names). The 16 Somvar Vrat involves observing a strict fast for sixteen consecutive Mondays, performing Shiva Puja on each day, and reading or listening to the Solah Somvar Vrat Katha. According to the Skanda Purana, the vrat was first described by Lord Shiva himself to Goddess Parvati, and has since been recommended for devotees seeking marriage, fertility, overcoming diseases, success in career, or general life prosperity. The vrat concludes with a special Udyapan (closing) ceremony on the 17th Monday, when the devotee offers a complete puja with prasad distribution.

16 Somvar Vrat Muhurat — When to Begin

The vrat can be started on any Monday, but the most auspicious times to begin are:

  • Shravan Maas (July–August) — the holiest month for Shiva worship; every Monday in Shravan is inherently powerful
  • Kartik Maas Mondays
  • Mahashivratri — if it falls on a Monday (rare but extremely auspicious)
  • Any Purnima or Ekadashi that coincides with Monday

Once begun, the 16 Mondays must be observed continuously without break. For personalised guidance on when to start based on your Kundali (especially if the purpose is marriage or health), consult our Kundali Analysis (₹499).

Step-by-Step 16 Somvar Vrat Vidhi

Step 1: Rules of the Vrat (Niyam)

Before beginning, understand the vrat's rules: Wake before sunrise. Bathe and wear clean white or light-coloured clothes. Remain celibate for the day. Speak truthfully. Avoid non-vegetarian food, alcohol, and tamasic foods on Mondays (and ideally throughout the 16-week period). The fast is kept from sunrise to sunset (or until performing the evening Shiva puja). Do not observe the vrat with a distracted or angry mind.

Step 2: Morning Ritual — Brahma Muhurat Preparation

Wake at Brahma Muhurat (approximately 4:30–5:30 AM). After bathing, apply Chandan (₹39) as a tilak on the forehead. Offer water to the rising sun (Surya Arghya). Light an Akhand Diya (₹99) at the Shiva altar for the day.

Step 3: Shiva Puja — Abhishek & Offerings

Establish a Shivalinga (idol or image) on a clean altar. Fill a Copper Kalash (₹599) with water, milk, and Gangajal (₹59). Perform Panchamrit Abhishek — pour milk, curd, honey, Desi Ghee (₹179), and sugar over the Shivalinga while chanting "Om Namah Shivaya." Offer Belpatra (bael leaves), white flowers (dhatura, white oleander, or white hibiscus), and apply Chandan (₹39) to the lingam. Offer Akshat (₹49) and Roli (₹45). Light incense and Bhimseni Kapoor (₹149).

Step 4: Mantra Chanting

Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times on a rudraksha mala (or any mala). For the 16 Somvar Vrat specifically, also chant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra: "Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam. Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat" — 108 times if possible, or at minimum 11 times.

Step 5: Katha Reading — 16 Somvar Vrat Katha

Read the Solah Somvar Vrat Katha (available in our Vrat Katha eBook, ₹49) with attention and reverence. The katha narrates the stories of those who performed the vrat and received Lord Shiva's blessings. Listening to or reading the katha with faith is considered as powerful as the puja itself.

Step 6: Aarti

Perform Shiva aarti ("Om Jai Shiv Omkara") using the Aarti Thali (₹299) and lit Bhimseni Kapoor (₹149). Rotate the thali clockwise five times before the Shivalinga.

Step 7: Fasting Rules — What to Eat and Avoid

During the fast, eat only once a day after the evening puja. Permissible foods: fruits, milk, curd, sabudana (sago), sendha namak (rock salt) preparations. Completely avoid: grains (wheat, rice), regular salt, non-vegetarian food, onion, garlic, alcohol. The vrat meal is typically consumed after sunset or after completing the puja.

Step 8: Udyapan — Closing Ceremony on the 17th Monday

On the 17th Monday (after completing all 16), perform the Udyapan ceremony: a full Shiva Puja with abhishek, followed by prasad preparation and distribution. The traditional prasad for 16 Somvar Vrat is wheat flour prasad (atta ka halwa) made with Desi Ghee (₹179). Distribute to at least 5 people. The Udyapan officially closes the vrat cycle and is mandatory — the vrat is considered incomplete without it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can women observe the 16 Somvar Vrat?

Yes, absolutely. The 16 Somvar Vrat is prescribed for both men and women in the Skanda Purana without distinction. Women have historically observed this vrat for the purpose of marriage, a loving husband, marital harmony, and children. There is no restriction during menstruation on the mental devotion, though physical puja activities are typically paused during that time and resumed after bath on the 5th day.

What if I miss a Monday during the 16-week cycle?

If you miss a Monday due to illness, travel, or emergency, the widely accepted practice is to not count that Monday and continue — essentially extending the vrat until you have completed 16 uninterrupted Mondays. Our Workshop Recording (₹199) addresses this scenario in detail, along with the appropriate prayer to offer when restarting after a gap.

What are the benefits of the 16 Somvar Vrat?

The Katha states that the vrat bestows: a good marriage partner (for unmarried people), marital harmony (for married couples), children (for those seeking progeny), recovery from illness, relief from debt, success in career, and overall life prosperity. Lord Shiva is known as Bholenath — the most easily pleased of all deities — and sincere performance of this vrat invariably brings his blessings.

Can I do the 16 Somvar Vrat for marriage?

This is one of the most common purposes for this vrat. Young women and men seeking suitable marriage partners often undertake the 16 Somvar Vrat. The Katha itself includes a story of how a princess observed the vrat and was reunited with her husband. For a complete personalised assessment of marriage prospects and the best vrats to observe for your situation, try our Kundali Analysis (₹499).

What is the prasad for 16 Somvar Vrat?

The traditional prasad is wheat flour halwa (atta sheera) made with Pure Desi Ghee (₹179) and jaggery or sugar. On each Monday during the vrat, a small portion of prasad should be offered to Shiva and distributed to family members. On the Udyapan (17th Monday), a larger preparation is made and distributed to at least five people.

Is the 16 Somvar Vrat different from Shravan Somvar Vrat?

Yes. Shravan Somvar Vrat is observed only during the four or five Mondays of the Shravan month (July–August). The 16 Somvar Vrat is a separate, more extensive commitment of sixteen consecutive Mondays, typically begun in Shravan but extending beyond it. Both are powerful — the 16 Somvar Vrat is recommended for those seeking a specific boon (mannat), while Shravan Somvar Vrat is an annual devotional practice.
