This guide answers the Day 4 questions that often arise at home—why Kushmanda is called Ashtabhuja, what to offer as malpua bhog, which name mantra to chant and how to adapt the observance to your household’s fasting tradition. Begin with devotion; an expensive or elaborate arrangement is not the measure of a sincere puja.

Kushmanda Puja 2026: Date and Tithi

⏰ Wednesday, 14 October 2026 — Maa Kushmanda Puja, Sharad Navratri Day 4, Ashwin Shukla Chaturthi. Calendar reference: New Delhi, India, IST (UTC+05:30). Local Panchang timings may vary; confirm your city’s tithi clock times separately.
Planning detail Day 4 reference
Date and weekday 14 October 2026, Wednesday
Lunar observance Ashwin Shukla Chaturthi
Devi form Maa Kushmanda, fourth Navadurga
Customary bhog Malpua; ingredients depend on household vrat practice
Simple remembrance Om Devi Kushmandayai Namah

Drik Panchang and AstroSage both visibly select New Delhi and agree on the date, weekday and Chaturthi observance. Exact start and end times are not quoted here because the daily timing page could not be reliably verified for Delhi. Do not treat an overseas Panchang clock as IST. This daily worship date is also not a separate Ghatasthapana installation muhurat.

For the full sequence, see our Sharad Navratri 2026 calendar and Ghatasthapana guide. Lunar tithis do not always map neatly onto nine consecutive civil dates; use the checked calendar rather than assigning every Devi by counting alone.

Who Is Maa Kushmanda?

Kushmanda is traditionally associated with creation and the radiance of the sun. In the devotional story, she brings the universe into being through her smile, illuminating primordial darkness. This is sacred mythology, not a scientific description of how the physical universe formed.

Her name is often explained through the ideas of a small cosmic egg and warmth or energy. Devotees honour her as a nourishing, life-giving form of the Mother. Prayers for strength and well-being express faith; they are not guarantees of medical recovery, wealth or an automatic change in circumstances.

She is called Ashtabhuja Devi, the eight-armed Goddess, and is commonly depicted riding a lion or lioness. Traditional depictions include the water vessel, bow, arrow, lotus, nectar pot, discus, mace and rosary; artistic details can vary. The calm expression is as important to her recognition as the many arms.

After the courage-centred reflection of the third day, our Chandraghanta Day 3 guide leads naturally into Kushmanda’s theme of light and nourishment. You can carry that reflection into ordinary conduct by sharing food or helping someone prepare for prayer.

Day 4 Puja Vidhi at Home

Prepare the altar without disturbing an existing kalash

Clean the worship surface, bathe and wear clean clothes. Arrange a Devi image, water, flowers, a small bhog bowl and a securely placed diya. If your family has already performed Ghatasthapana, continue its established daily routine; do not reinstall or move the kalash simply because a new Devi day begins.

  1. Set a simple intention. Remember Ganesh ji and offer a short sankalp for sincere worship. Use your own language if that helps you remain attentive.
  2. Offer water and flowers. Place clean flowers before Maa. Red flowers are traditionally associated with Kushmanda, but use what is respectfully available. Roli or kumkum for the puja tilak can support your customary offering practice; avoid applying powders to a delicate idol without checking its surface.
  3. Present naivedya. Keep the offering untasted and covered until puja. Place a modest portion of malpua or the household’s chosen suitable bhog in a clean dish.
  4. Chant slowly. Recite the name mantra below at a comfortable pace. A fixed count is optional for this simple household routine, not a condition for being heard.
  5. Conclude with aarti. Sing the familiar Devi aarti, bow and share prasad. Attend every flame and extinguish it safely when worship ends.

Use our complete Navratri home-puja sequence for the wider altar setup. Formal temple rites and family traditions may be more detailed than this practical daily outline.

Kushmanda Mantra

ॐ देवी कूष्माण्डायै नमः॥
Om Devi Kushmandayai Namah.

This short salutation offers reverence to Maa Kushmanda. Read it clearly rather than rushing. Keep a printed line beside the altar if needed, and allow a brief quiet pause after chanting. A teacher can guide longer recitations; they need not be added to an unfamiliar routine all at once.

Malpua Bhog: A Thoughtful Offering

Malpua is a customary fourth-day bhog. Preparing a small fresh batch can make the offering feel personal, but its ingredients matter when family members are fasting. Ordinary malpua recipes may contain wheat flour, which does not fit many grain-free Navratri vrat practices.

Separate two questions: what your family offers to Devi, and what a fasting person eats afterward. Use a vrat-compatible recipe only if its ingredients are accepted in your tradition. Alternatively, follow your household’s usual simpler offering. Do not assume every sweet sold as prasad is suitable for every fast.

Use food-grade ingredients for anything eaten. Ritual powders and lamp fuel belong to worship supplies, not the bhog bowl. Serve prasad respectfully in small portions and keep kitchen cleanliness at the centre of preparation.

Fasting and Samagri

Navratri food customs vary by household and region. Some devotees take fruit and milk, others one simple meal or foods prepared with customary vrat ingredients. Follow a familiar, suitable practice; prayer and service remain meaningful without restrictive fasting. Avoid turning someone’s dietary limitation into a judgement about their devotion.

A practical samagri list includes a Devi image, clean water, flowers, roli, diya and wick, appropriate lamp fuel, a separate bhog bowl and an aarti text. Gangajal for your customary ritual-water offering is useful where your family uses it; ordinary clean water keeps the basic home arrangement manageable. Neither purchase is a prerequisite for devotion.

📖 Keep Kushmanda’s bhog and mantra beside the altar

It is a convenient single reference as your family moves from one worship day to the next. The live listing is ₹199, with Email and WhatsApp PDF access after successful payment; no physical book is shipped.

The temple’s own website identifies Maa Kushmanda, and BHU-hosted tourism material also mentions Kushmandadevi and Durga Kund. If visiting, confirm the current darshan arrangements directly; this article does not promise a special 2026 opening schedule or a dedicated booking window.
